He's a great keyboardist and the range of his voice is impressive, and while his lyrics seem like they're structured to entertain, the seriousness of his voice clashes and both and I my traveling-mate thought he seemed quite conflicted. There's one line in particular that sticks out in my mind - he's singing a love song for this "dancer" (stripper) he knew whenever, saying, "If you can do it your way / If you let me do it my way / then we can do it always" He suggests they do it in the kitchen, her bathtub, and then operatically sings "innnnn yourrrr back-yard!" I realize that lately Jewel has been employing the same sort of strange vocal structuring around her lyrics - but she simply does a better job of it. Her delivery seems like more of a performance, a recital to marvel at. Amanda, who was also at the show, may or may not agree with me, but in comparison with other shows I've been to in the past, Jewel did seem quite distracted the whole evening. I heard prior to the show, and then Jewel mentioned, that for the first time in three weeks she would get to see Ty, for which she said she was in a "fantastic" mood, but I felt that she let her personal desires interefere with the performance she was delivering. Her setlist started out normal enough - Near You Always, Deep Water, then a surprise-to-me Down So Long, she also hit up regulars YWMFM, FG, WWSYS, Race car Driver by request, the normal 3 from 0304. She did an ad-lib that was based off of Stephensville, TX - she did a one-verse called Louisville, KY. She introduced Carnivore with "not that I was bitter or anything" When she sings "Everything Reminds Me of You" with Joe, she does quite an entertaining job of making it seem like she has Ty in mind but she's out sleeping with this guy on the road. "A little too close for comfort" is how my date described Jewel's attitude towards Joe. I'm not starting the rumor mill, that's completely an observational thing, no factual basis, and I'm really not even speculating, I'm just sayin she's a very entertaining girl. After the duet, Jewel sang Chime Bells via a "yodel!" request - then took off abruptly. I've never heard the WWSYS intro that she did the last two nights - she starts off saying that she wanted to Hitchhike across Mexico when she was 16 - so she scraped together enough money to get on the train in Detroit (headed over several stops to San Diego). She's going to be a sidewalk singer, does a little ditty on how you never hear more than 5 words from a sidewalk singer, so she can just sing the same 5 words over and over as long as her hair is cleaner than the others and she'll make it ok. First stop is in Chicago, it's St Patricks day, she makes a killing on the crowds drinking Green Beer. It was REALLY interesting to see the difference between how she presented it in Merrillville (just south of Gary, which is the indiana side of Chicago), where people were pro-Irish celebration and understood the tradition, and how she delivered in Louisville saying, "you know how they are up there". Being that I'm about an hour from Chicago, *I* thought it was a riot. Anyway, she wraps it up really fast saying she had the world's longest song as a result of this traveling and writing about people she saw, and that includes a few references to corns & bunions (she rubbed traveler's feet for "$5"), that song was the first song she wrote, WWSYS, recorded it with Neil Young's band / his recording studio, she makes the kermit the frog reference, sings the song. In Merrillville she also did the Dentist reference - says that one of the Velvet Rope ticket holders a few weeks back freaked her out, he said, "I've been waiting so long...." then "to get you in my chair..." She says, which freaked me out even more because I was thinking like leather and chains...turns out he was a Dentist. I'm horrible at remembering the order of concerts, much less making a presentable recollection for other people, but that's the show as I saw it. James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 08:58:13 -0800 (PST) From: James Brogdon Subject: [EDA] Louisvill,e Picture / Recording Request I sat front row, didn't take a camera because last year at the Kentucy Center for the Arts, the aisle-monkeys were very overbearing. I could've taken lots of pictures... Jewel did make a complaint about some other girl front row who was distracting her with her (no flash use) picture taking. Anyway, if anyone has pictures or the first 45 minutes recorded, please contact me direct. I have everything from Life Uncommon forward, I believe Carnivore immediately preceeded it, I was having power issues with my recorder, didn't get it fixed until well into the show. James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 16:01:11 EST From: MicheleMarie333@aol.com Subject: [EDA] i love jewel! kentucky concert review and velvet rope I just want to say that I love JEWEL!!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday was the best day of my entire life, and I will never ever forget it ever! ever! They said Jewel irons all her clothes and does her own make up and hair and shes the most low matinence peformer they've worked with. Joe came in and then we took pics w/ him. I LOVE HER! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 10:12:56 -0800 (PST) From: Amanda Subject: [EDA] Evansville, Merrillville, and Louisville I went to all 3 shows this weekend, and might i add im exhausted? lol Well, i have to say out of allll the shows i have been to, evansville was by far the best ever. She was in a spectacular mood, she talked a lot, and took request after request. She told the new WWSYS story which i havent heard, so it was new to me at least. She played for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and would have gone for more except it was getting late lol. Anyway, this show was by far the best. She did do a little Q&A which someone shouted "When are you getting married?" her response was "as Soon as my boyfriend asks. When he does, it's a yes!" and then someone else said "Do you want kids?" "Yes, i do want kids" *shrug* in merrillville i did the meet and greet with Adina. We were instructed to have on cameras on and ready with flash on. When it was my turn for the "10 seconds with jewel" i walked up next to her, and when the tour manager went to take the pic, the camera wouldnt work. i was sooo mad. So i used adina's camera, apologized to jewel, and went on my way. When i got out of the dressing room, i was trying to figure out what was wrong with my new digital. Then i relized, the manager hit "video" so i have a video of me meeting jewel lol. I wasn't about to say anything, because im sure they would make me delete it. The audience in merrillville was the worst. (no offense lol). They wouldnt stop talking. One guy threw a bunny up at her, and when she went to catch it the mic stand fell over on her. he kept yelling that she was gorgeous, and beautiful, and finally she told him to shut up. The audience talked through most songs, and in the middle of the jewel amd joe duet, one section of girls were giggling like obnoxious drunks. Louisville seemed to be different. She was in a goofy mood, and even ended 3 songs with an aria type ending. I sgree with james, she was distracted. As far as Jewel and JOe goes.... I thought it was weird to. Joe is constantly telling stories like "Jewel and i were drunk" "We were singing her in room" "we were up late talking" and he actually sits on the side of the stage during her whole set. The vibe i got from the duet was just really weird. I agree with James that the whole things just was really odd. The connection with them seemed very comfortable, and close. but who the hell am i right? ;) Anywho, thats my long 3 day, crappy review... and im off to bed because im so tired!. If anyone has pics from any of the 3 shows, please email me. Thanks! Amanda __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online.
