As some of you might know, Warner Music Group (the company that owns Atlantic Records - Jewel's label) was recently purchased from Time Warner by Seagrams, a company owned by Ed Bronfman. Anyway... Ed has just taken control of Warner... and his agenda is to basically, trim the fat. This is in terms of staff and also artists. He is sacking 1000 Warner Music Group employees, merging two labels (Atlantic Records and Elektra) and a few major executives within Warner have left. These include Sylvia Rhone (the chairman of Elektra), Val Azzoli (the co-chairman of Atlantic) and Ron Shapiro (the co-president of Atlantic). The last two are of specific importance to Jewel. Val Azzoli and Ron Shapiro are two of Jewel's most ardent supporters within Atlantic. Ron Shapiro is the guy that RAVES about her on the Life Uncommon video, if you've seen it... calling her voice a gift from god and all that. If you look in the liner notes of Jewel's albums... you'll see Jewel's gratitude in what she says about him. He was the guy that bugged Atlantic to continue to push her record at every marketing meeting in 1995 and 1996 and he's basically responsible for a lot of her succes... and her success is part of what pushed him up the ranks of Atlantic, eventually to co-president which is he was until a couple of days ago. Anyway - Warner will obviously be trimming the fat in terms of artists as well. Jewel is in no danger of being dropped - she's too big of an artist and still very viable. BUT... would it be in her interests to find a new record label after her contract with WMG is up? She's got one more album left in her current deal and then she will either re-negotiate with WMG or find another record company. Or perhaps this change will give her the opportunity to re-negotiate now. Should she follow Ron Shapiro, wherever he ends up? Should she just start from scratch with another label... EMI, Sony - she wouldn't have any trouble getting a new deal, that's for sure. What do you guys think? This is pretty serious business... and it has a great impact on her career and what we hear from her in the future. Should we start writing to Warner Music Group to try to protect her contract in case they DO try to drop her? Maybe this news will spark some kind of a discussion in here!
