I'm sitting here watching the audition episodes of American Idol for the first time (watched the first two seasons, just never watched the audition episodes). I mean, some of the people there DO know that they do not have what it takes and are just doing it for a lark and to maybe make it on the "audition episodes" (I would too), but it's totally amazing to me how many think they are great and they are sooooooooo horribly bad it's painful to even watch them be shocked and in disbelief when they get cut to shreds by the judges...they honestly think they are good. Like the gal last night that Simon bet her that she'd empty a bar if she started singing....she said "no way Simon, you are crazy, I'll knock them dead" and lo and behold they took her to a bar, she screeched and 12 of 13 patrons left one by one. Then tonight, the poor gal (I felt for her) that tried so hard, lost 80 pounds and pitifully sang the theme from Flashdance and she and her friend felt the judges were miles off base "don't know talent when they see it". She WAS pitiful at singing. She had tons of heart...she really wanted to strut her stuff and make it onto the show, but she just didn't have any stuff at all. My main point is, how can these people who honestly think they are really, really good and in fact are quite horrible (understatement), be so blind? ( or should I say, be so tone deaf?). I'm amazed at how clueless some people can be. Until I had a friend audition. She got through 3 auditions, and then didn't get through on the 4th, and guess what? She never saw Randy, or Paula, or Simon... because, they screen people before they ever see them, and they always have. So, basically, yeah, these people think they *must* be good by the time they make it to Randy, Paula & Simon, and then *boom* they are saying they suck, so it IS sort of a shock to them. Makes you think of it a little differently knowing they specifically set up a bunch of bad people...and then you have the judges all complaining how horrible it is to have to sit through that crap, when they are sending them to them on purpose. Still though, I always wonder...just to want to audition in the first place those people have to think they are good...and someone has had to encourage them most likely to get that idea...I just don't understand how you can really have no idea you are that bad. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 20:38:07 -0600 From: "Rob Hanning" Subject: RE: [EDA] NJC: Totally clueless people (American Idol) Mike, c'mon. Of coure Randy, Paula and Simon can't personally audition 80,000 people, and I guess I can kind of see how someone might think they were good if they were getting through to them. BUT anyone who has watched the show the last two years knows that they specifically highlight the worst singers for the first few shows. I still see them as completely clueless... you'd think they should almost be expecting it. I mean, have these people ever recorded themselves on audio or video? Jeez...
