Jewel concert switch defended By GENEVIEVE READ 14jan04 JEWEL concert promoters have defended changing the venue from Moorilla Estate to Tolosa Park, and predict the outdoor area could attract other international acts. In the face of criticism of the move and angry ticket holders wanting their money back, On The Green national promoter Michael Newton said Tolosa Park would be used for concerts far more if it was in any other capital city. "It's a fantastic concert site for big acts like this," he said. "You can see from everywhere and it has a good tiered ampitheatre. In any other capital city it would be used all the time. We feel good about putting Jewel there." He conceded the venue change this week had upset several fans. "We understand that people love Moorilla down there, which is great for Moorilla," Mr Newton said. "But the response to Jewel in Australia has been more than we anticipated everywhere, and we were getting so many calls from people in the north of Tasmania who were going to miss out." The February 15 event will now host 4000 people, not the 2000 planned at Moorilla. "It'll still be intimate, that venue can hold 10,000 people," Mr Newton said. "This is not a money making thing, we actually have to spend more on infrastructure and security from [Glenorchy City] Council." Moorilla CEO Tim Goddard said fitting 2000 people at Moorilla was always going to be tight. "It wasn't ever going to be the usual spread yourselves out concert for Jewel," he said. Mr Goddard said the response to the move had been largely positive in Hobart, and predicted the 4000 tickets would be sold. "It shows you that Tasmanians want international acts and we believe Tolosa Park is the best venue for the day," he said. Jewel will be supported by Brisbane band George and Tasmania's Monique Brumby. Yahoo!
