So, in the absence of any other post on the subject, I thought I'd do a quick review of the concert the other night. In a word, great. In three words, great -as usual-. Those who think Jewel has sold out should eat their words. Shall I pass the salt? (Sorry to get controversial, but it's my opinion.) While waiting for the show to start, they played a CD - though I'm not sure whose it was. I was momentarily amused because at a couple of points, the CD skipped. Over and over. It was strange. The opening act, Joe Firstman, was very good, but I can't truthfully say I was overly impressed by him. He's a damn good pianist with shades of Tori Amos, and his lyrics were good, but his demeanor... well, it didn't suit a large-ish venue. Then again, since he said it was the first time he'd been on stage in a venue that large (1500 or so people, IIRC,) maybe what I was seeing was hampered by his nerves. Just seemed like he was trying a bit too hard to be cool. (Though I must say I had a great conversation with the young British woman who was manning his table. I wish we could've talked more. You're not out there, are you? Heehee. Can't blame me for trying.) Anyway. There was about a half hour break between his set and Jewel. She comes out and rocks through 18 songs, including the encores: Grey Matter, Everything Breaks Sometimes, Carnivore, Jesus Loves You, Little Sister, Hands, New Wild West, Life Uncommon, 2 Find U, 2 Become 1, Intuition, Stand, Cold Song, Near You Always, Passing Time, YWMFM (w/ Rosarita's Deluxe Resort story beforehand.) Then, for encores: Angel Standing By, and... um... an Italian opera piece, which I don't know the name of, but she just did so well on it. I forgot to mention, when she did YWMFM and she was telling the story, I yelled out "Yeah Poltzie!"... and she heard me! OMG, you coulda knocked me over with a feather. "Yeah, Poltzie Boy. He's in his forties, but..." she said. So I can never say I have never talked with her. Granted we were probably 150 feet apart, but... I was amazed though, at the acoustics of the place. I think my voice did carry so well because of the placement of the wheelchair seating - under a balcony (I think). I tried not to whoop it up too much - as I thought the people in front of me might've lynched me if I did - - not to mention my dad, who bore with me on the concert. (I'm slowly converting him, though, guys!) Oh! And at the end, she tossed out little somethings (candies?) to the first few rows... and when she ran out of those, she took the flowers that had been on the table and gave them to this guy.... that lucky, lucky son of a ... gun. Well, what else can I say other than I wish I could rewind the last 48 hours and do it all again. (Nothing new there, though!) Talk to ya later!
