Acoustic format reveals Jewel's many facets 01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 BY RICK MASSIMO Journal Pop Music Writer While Jewel's performance last night at the Providence Performing Arts Center was downscaled to a solo acoustic show due to catastrophic circumstance, she took advantage of the opportunities the format provided. Jewel had originally scheduled a show with her entire band, but the death Sept. 4 of bassist Terome "T-Bone" Herndon forced a change of plans. The singer had said that there would be plenty of fun in the performance, and there was. Other than an opening a cappella rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" and a dedication of "Save Your Soul" to Herndon, there was no outward recognition that this night was different. Indeed, Jewel's performance had a loose, coffeehouse feel to it, as she told stories, exchanged banter with the audience and at one point asked for help with some lyrics. Her shaggy-dog story about meeting Bob Dylan led into the Dylanesque (her description) "Sometimes It Be That Way." In general, the acoustic format, and more importantly the live performance, suited Jewel's voice well. It had more depth and dimension than on record, where it sometimes comes off as a lazy chirp. Particularly impressive were the vocal swoops during "Save Your Soul," in which she went from glassy high notes down to world-weary sighs in an instant. And she brought the tempo of "Standing Still" down just a touch -- not enough to turn it into a ballad, but just enough to really dig in vocally. If Jewel's lyrics sometimes lapse into sloganeering when taking on the world at large ("Together we can make a stand," "We are the new army"), she takes better snapshots when writing about affairs of the heart. "Sorry I didn't have a match/ To start a fire big enough for your heart to catch," she sang on "Sometimes It Be That Way." As promised, the set included songs off her new dance-oriented album, 0304, and while they were clearly distinguishable, they just as clearly stood beside her earlier work. "Two Become One" should have gotten a full reinvention for the acoustic setting, rather than a chugging strum that echoed the band version. The skeleton of the song holds together, though. "Intuition" translated well: The dance beat was convincingly mimicked on acoustic guitar, and on the chorus she took the more interesting lower melody (of the two she sings on record).
