["Kristen Kelley" ] [EDA] avrils b-day...reason for posting ["J W" ] [EDA] Attention Cincinnati/NKY/Indiana EDAs ["Gina Brumley" Subject: [EDA] stand video/shower scene I love the video. I think it's her best. I can't believe she actually out-did Intuition with this video. I wasn't expecting that. It's incredibly well done and very clever in the way it integrates all the ideas/political messages. I also love all the computer graphics... very cool. As for the shower scene... I don't see the deal. The lyrics are "I will love you/you will love me"... she obviously wanted to have some kind of sensual imagery over those words... and in keeping with the idea that she's just come home at the end of the day, which is set up in the rest of the video, it makes sense that she might have a shower at some point or another. I think it's very tastefully done. The Intuition video was pure skankorama ... and tongue in cheek obviously... but that shower scene is natural and beautiful. There's nothing distasteful or skanky about it. I don't see why it should have to be "a parody" for us to be ok with it. She looks gorgeous... nothing wrong with that. And I think it fits that section of the song well. Just my opinion. Anima Lawal, who was sentenced to be stoned to death for having a child out of wedlock in Nigeria, was thankfully set free due to a "technicality" (more likely heavy political pressure). Thank goodness this barbaric sentence was set aside, even though the poor woman spent I think 2 years in jail. At the 9:30 Club there was a decent reason for this, they had a late show of A Mighty Wind following her set. However, at The Borgata last night there was no reason to hurry, was there? It's not all that long a drive to Boston from Atlantic City. Customarily you could expect 1:40 from a solo acoustic Jewel show. Last night's show was 1:20 to follow up a 9:30 Club set that was only 1:15. The nicest surprise was probably the opening number - an accapella rendering of "You Are My Sunshine" (yes - THAT "You Are My Sunshine"). Also, it appeared that Jewel had used her four days in between shows to learn some of the new songs as there didn't appear to be any chord cheat sheets on the stage as there were in DC and she didn't require Jeff's help as much as she previously did. Although, she did have him help out with "Stand" and "Haunted", which was nice in particular on "Haunted" as she was able to direct all of her energy into the vocals. As evidenced by the setlist though, this was a pretty pedestrian effort for Jewel. Not that I've seen a Jewel performance that wasn't more bang for my buck than just about any other artist. But, when she came to ask the crowd what they wanted to hear she let the requests lead her into things like "Standing Still", as opposed to something a bit deeper in her songbook. I have to say though, that the crowd that was on hand seemed to be bored with things like "Everything Breaks" and "Passing Time" as there was audible chit chat throughout the crowd. So, I'll give Jewel the benefit of the doubt to a degree, she's never been oblivious to crowd activity - although previously she would have admonished the crowd and last night she just gave them what was familiar to keep them entertained. It was still somewhat disappointing that she didn't pull out something a bit rarer, considering that she came on at 9:10 and left the stage after "Chime Bells" at 10:30. In any case, as critical as I'm sure this all sounds - what she did play she played very well. I just wouldn't have minded a couple more songs and a slightly longer set, especailly considering the face value of the tickets in Atlantic City was $60 - $80 before Ticketmaster service charges. I will also do a few B&P's. Songs include 2 become 1, Stand, Haunted, and Intuition. Not a huge fan of the new album, but think Jewel always shines when it's an acoustic performance. (Stand Video) From Reducedtoyou: >i guess what mainly just threw me off was the fact that, of course, she's >always said in interviews that Intuition was complete tongue and cheek, and >she wanted to play off the whole 'corruption of the music industry' by >dressing J-Lo hoochie and what have you; but i thought THAT whole sexyness >was just for the message she sends in Intuition; not Stand. I think with the Intuition video, she just wanted to show the extreme over-the-top-ness of the sex and other things in the pop industry. She tried to be overly sexy and revealing for that, and went extremely "glam" with it. However, Jewel has always stated that she believed sexuality was important to a woman (or something along those lines) and also said she wanted 0304 to make you feel sexy, and to give off a sexy image. I really don't think she intends to be the kind of sexy that she was in Intuition. That was just really really over-the top, and yes, it was all tongue in cheek. I think she was just trying to show how a lot of the pop industry's women (and men) really really over-do what it means to be sexy and most of the time just look skanky. However, The sexy in the Stand video was much more sophisticated (as sophisticated you could get for a shower scene, at least) and left something to the imagination. Thats the good kind of sexiness, not "hoochie," and I think thats the kind of sexy image Jewel wants. So basically, its two very different kinds of sexy. The Intuition sexiness was tongue in cheek, while the Stand was more sophisticated, and I think what Jewel is going for. We shouldn't completely ignore the fact that sexuality exists or that any reference to sex is bad, because like it or not (who here doesn't like it?), its a major part of life, and when its done the right way its a great thing.
