James. A Jewel Solitaire Finds Right Setting at the 9:30 It wasn't supposed to be like this. That thought must have entered Jewel's mind when she walked onstage, alone, at the 9:30 club Monday night. Earlier this month, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter was preparing for a national tour with a full band to support her new album, "0304" -- a slightly tongue-in-cheek foray into the diva pop world occupied by Christina, Beyonce and Britney -- when Jewel's bass player, Terome "T-Bone" Hannon, 39, died of a stroke. After initially canceling the tour, Jewel decided to play a limited number of solo acoustic dates. Considering the circumstances, her performance Monday was remarkably upbeat and mostly free of the melancholy that might have been expected. Instead her refreshingly informal performance made the 9:30 seem like an overgrown coffeehouse. Jewel kept things loose by joking with fans, complaining about her sore fingertips, forgetting words and explaining that she became a singer-songwriter because "I suck at everything else." Midway through "Standing Still," she dissolved into a fit of giggles and was barely able to finish the song. Later, when she called out for requests, one fan shouted out "Free Bird" and was promptly flipped off by the singer. This is the Jewel many fans prefer -- unpredictable and irreverent. She also rewarded them with a magnificently expressive voice that ranges from raw power to sly insinuation and childlike innocence. Her folk-pop musings, such as "Little Sister" and "Long Slow Slide," echoed Joni Mitchell, while such newer songs as "Stand" and "The New Wild West" cast a cynical eye at politics and leaders. Despite her undeserved reputation for fluffiness, Jewel actually takes more chances than most other pop artists. It wasn't until the final song of the night that Jewel finally addressed Hannon's death. "I don't even like talking about this," she said before dedicating "Who Will Save Your Soul" to her former bass player and friend. A sorrowful, beautiful take on the song, it felt like a fitting tribute and the only way to end a thoroughly satisfying performance. -- Joe Heim Would you like to send this article to a friend? Since she dropped for the 2nd time in her careeer her management, things are not looking good for jewel. She seems to make the wrong decisions. I don't get why the information flows to the fans are so limited. I think it was always the online community!!! I want to find out what happened to Alan. I want to know what the plans are. Changing to Anzoff, Christina Aguilera's manager hasn't made a big impact at the moment. Jewel is most famous for singing live, and therefor her touring is amazing. I want to find out why Jewel wouldn't want to sing a duet with Dido , a big name act in the UK. I think Jewel's management should listen more. Year of hard work made Jewel turning from a folkie artist into a singer with amazing talents. She did a great job with writing songs. I do admit that the touring of 0304 now accoustically has been done amazing. I like the impact that Jewel has achieved in HOlland. It is amazed how her career has developed. But is where stands now really what she wanted from her heart, or what she wanted to do to keep be able to tour. I love to hear singing Jewel again, i already miss all the great new wild west shows. her range of voices is amazing. i really enjoy it, and love to see her touring with steve poltz. it is time to tour again with steve. both have new cd's out on the market, so a combination of the two singers would be smart. bye michiel www.jewelkilcher.nl the dutch nr # 1 fan site ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2003 13:10:29 -0700 From: "Melissa Bruce" Subject: [EDA] Stand video now on Jewelink Lounge Did you all see that the video for Stand is on Jewelink.com?
