Hi, not a dumb question-- an aneurysm is a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain usually an artery. When that weak spot bursts , blood leaks into the brain. It can cause stroke like symptoms and be confused at times with a stroke (a stroke is caused more from clogging an artery with little pieces of plaque from a blood vessel somewhere else in the body). An aneurysm can cause a variety of symptoms when they occur ranging from intense headache ("worse headache of you life syndrome")to full blown seizure and unconciousness . The outcome can be anywhere from the bleeding resolving on its own, to needing surgery to repair the bleed to being bad enough to lead to subsequent brain death. All of this depends on how severe and where in the brain the bleed occured. Any of us can be walking around with a thin spot which is a scary thing however there are several risk factors that lend themselves contributing to that thin spot to burst. High blood pressure and smoking. Nicotine causes vasoconstriction (the blood vessels narrow) and an elevated blood pressure causes the blood vessels to widen causing stress on the thin spot thus subsequently bursting. So that is what it is. :) Mary Lynn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 00:33:31 -0700 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Re: [EDA] aneurysm shawn, > this is probably a dumb ?, but what is an aneurism?? you mean "aneurysm." http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=aneurysm * A localized, pathological, blood-filled dilatation of a blood vessel caused by a disease or weakening of the vessel's wall. * A soft, pulsating, hollow tumor, containing blood, arising from the preternatural dilation or rupture of the coats of an artery. trying google, I get: http://www.google.com/search?q=aneurysm&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 the first hit is here: http://www.columbia.edu/~mdt1/faqs.html 1. What is an aneurysm? An aneurysm is a dilation of a blood vessel (similar to a balloon) that poses a risk to health from the potential for rupture, clotting, or dissecting. Rupture of an aneurysm in the brain causes stroke, and rupture of an aneurysm in the abdomen causes shock. The abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the most common, and the rest of this discussion will focus on the AAA.
