The cut by the company, which has contracts with artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige and Shania Twain, is an effort to revive sales, which have dropped 30% industrywide over the past three years. U.S. sales in 2002 dropped 8% to $12.6 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). "We expect this will invigorate the music market in North America," said Doug Morris, UMG chairman and CEO. "This will allow retailers (to sell) for $10 or less if they so choose." The wholesale price on most CDs will drop to $9.09 from $12.02, with some top artists, such as Eminem, at $10.10. UMG expects retailers, who set final prices, to start selling CDs for about $12 on Oct. 1 and hopes they will go as low as $10. "We've tracked this carefully. There's no question: The consumer responds when we get to that sweet spot of $11 to $12 per CD," says Jim Urie, president of Universal Music & Video Distribution. Executives at the other four major music companies - Warner, EMI, BMG and Sony - declined to comment. In addition to the price cuts, UMG will replace ad subsidies for retailers with more ads for its own products to lure music fans back into stores. The company also is cutting the suggested retail for cassettes to $8.98. The price cuts are also the music industry's latest attempt to slow illegal file sharing by consumers. The RIAA has served more than 1,300 subpoenas to identify traders and expects to file lawsuits as early as this week. Record companies are losing $700 million a year to piracy, says Josh Bernoff, media and entertainment analyst at Forrester Research. "It's disgraceful that people are losing their jobs and stores are closing," Morris says. "As the leader in the industry, we feel we should pave the way with a plan that, if it's successful, will become permanent." It remains to be seen whether the cuts will be enough to persuade young consumers to buy CDs. Discounters such as Wal-Mart already discount CDs to about $13. Michael Goodman, an analyst with Yankee Group, warned that if retailers refuse to pass on their full savings to consumers, "They could exacerbate a bad situation." And Bernoff warns that lowering prices will not solve the long-term problem of file sharing: "This price reduction may stem the tide of losses in the short term. But in the long run, the only solution is to provide music online for people who want music online. That's the future, not CDs." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2003 07:31:12 EDT From: StuartnDee@aol.com Subject: [EDA] New ticketmaster plan :( New ticketmaster plan :( Dee http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/09/01/tech/main570971.shtml ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Sep 2003 11:29:29 +1000 From: Fredsteve Subject: [EDA] just quickly... Up to last Sunday I believed that the press was wrong in calling Jewel a sellout/slut ect. I said they were just shooting at her for something to write about. That view was changed with a little article in Parade magazine in last Sundays paper. The question and answer column in Parade is always truthful. The article said that yup, its all true, "its a calculated move to win Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera`s young fans." Jewel could have been honest and said something like: Hey, this is what I need to do to stay in music, but instead she just keeps lying and trying to make everyone believe she is just having fun. That's pure bullshit. What do you think that book, Revealing Jewel is all about? Its a smoke screen to make us think that she is true blue, she is not. Now the local radio (WBMX Boston Mix 98.5) is advertising that Michael Branch will be on the show tomorrow morning telling what a slut Jewel is and how much she does not ever want to be like Jewel. Nice huh. if that's not Goddard, then what is? Add everything else that going on and you may understand why I am feeling betrayed I think I am the biggest hard core fool of all. Almost ten years believing a lie, not to mention money. I must have over $1000 worth Jewel stuff that is now meaningless. I still hope that something will prove to me that I am wrong but it will take something MAJOR from Jewel to accomplish this. I have tickets to two concerts that I don't want to attend. I am afraid of what I might yell out. I would rather stay home. Thanks for letting me vent! Just thought I'd respond to this. The general consensus about Unedited I agree with... but I think you're confused about a few things! >I don't understand, what did we pay $40 for? A few incomplete performance >audio and videos? Just thought I'd mention that according to people who have Unedited (I don't)... since the new management took over the audio/video has gone from short clips (usually only a verse and a chorus) to almost full songs.... I heard there was a full version of Rocker Girl... as well as close to full versions (like only 30 seconds missing or something) of other songs... Rosy and Mick and Violet Eyes. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I heard. >Well now, you can go to jeweljk and without even becoming an unedited member >you can click on the tickets link and buy your ticket package. That just isn't true.... look closer - if you actually want to *buy* any of the packages you need to login to Unedited. I think having the tickets page integrated into the website like that is a very good idea. It means non-Unedited members can know which shows they're selling packages for before they spent $40 on a membership. I'd be annoyed if I signed up for that reason and then found that my venue was sold out or not even available in the first place. But the point is - you have to be a member to buy any of those packages. Also... and this is an extremely important point that I think most people are missing (I know I did at first). THE PRESALES AND THE TICKET PACKAGES ARE TWO SEPARATE THINGS! Presales happen BEFORE the show and just give Unedited members a jump on the cue. The packages are a TOTALLY separate entity. You're paying for seats that you can't get through the normal avenues any longer. Every venue has sold out the first 20 rows... and they're offering those seats to Unedited members for not a whole lot more than you'd pay buying through Ticketmaster. And certainly for a whole lot less than you'd pay through Ebay or other premium ticket brokers (which is the only other option for those seats at this point). What made me realise all this is that the Indianapolis show is going onsale this Saturday (it's the last show on the tour to go onsale)... and the presale began this week. The presale is linked from the front page of Jeweljk.com as a completely separate thing from the ticket packages. I'm sure when the 2nd leg of the tour is announced the presales will happen first, and then the ticket packages will go onsale probably after tickets have been onsale a couple of weeks. And to have access to either you need to be a member of Unedited. If anything they've EXPANDED what Unedited offers you, not decreased it. Now, not only do you get a jump on the cue for tickets via the presales... but if you miss out on that you can buy very good seats that are at a premium (selling for $200 and more on ebay and via ticket brokers) direct from Jewel's website for something like $20 extra than what you would have paid had you bought them when they first went onsale. >Well, at least for anyone that we pissed off by musictoday, Jewel has moved >on to having FansRule move her presale tickets for her. But they do business >the same way, only difference is you don't know where your seat is until >you get >it. Again... presales and ticket packages are SEPARATE THINGS. I think musictoday is still running the presales, and fansrule has taken over management of Jewel's website... which includes Unedited and the ticket packages. Musictoday are still running Jewel's online store. >Other acts GIVE you meet and greets just for being a fan club member and >being one of the first to reply that you'd like to be on the list (don't >reply too >fast if you can't make it though, you'll never be on the list again). Or, >some acts will allow fans to put their names into a random drawing for a >particular show and if you get picked you get your pass. Linkin Park and >Joe Satriani >(on his own AND his G3 tours with Steve Vai and friends). I agree wholeheartedly with this. While I don't necessarily think the velvet rope packages are that expensive or outrageous.... I do think selling opportunities to meet Jewel is a little tacky. And part of what was advertised in the original blurb for Unedited was opportunities to meet Jewel. It didn't specifically say that you wouldn't pay extra for these opportunities... however the implication was that you were PAYING the $40 for that opportunity, among other things. It's misleading to now all of a sudden charge people to meet her. However, they haven't ruled out the possibility of contests or random drawings for meet and greet passes either. In fact in the Unedited description now there are a two separate points that involve meet and greets. One of those describes the velvet rope and the other just says "exclusive opportunities to meet Jewel" or something. So perhaps they'll surprise us. Hope this clarifies some stuff. It's not all as bad as it seems. Steve. PS - on the JeweLink board the moderator (Christina) who is involved with Jewel's management came on and said that they had suffered an unfortunate incident with their server and had to quickly jump servers which is why the new website had to go up before it's ready. I think they planned to transition the website when it was ready... and not have this downtime... but something went wrong with the server they were on. She seemed to think that when the actual website goes live we'll really like it. I hope she's right. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #388 ***************************
