Until I read this: >>Then once seeing Jewel's CD cover in the store (I refuse to purchase 0304) >>she says, << Wait, you're here saying that what Jewel doing now is bad? And you havn't even heard the album? Sorry, but that just takes any valid points you may of made out of your e-mail, unless you used to like Jewel for her clothes and not her music. The album is different, but if you were reading the list we've all said that the rest of the album sounds NOTHING like Intuition (Its still a great song for the pop genre though). Just because the album is pop, doesn't mean its horrible. You still even find some very very very genuinely Jewel songs on it. And one point I'd like to make on the "now sounds like everyone else" thing is that the girl-and-her-guitar thing is VERY VERY VERY common. What made Jewel original was her lyrics and voice, in my opinion, not her guitar, and both of those are still on the album. Her falsetto voice was overdone in some parts, which is kind of true for This Way as well, but in other parts it dumped the high tone and sometimes even soared (Haunted and parts of a couple other songs) better than any of her previous albums so far. Yes, this album is different, but its still Jewel. Blah blah blah I've said it all before. The lyrics and voice that made her original and great are all still there. And I can't believe that people are still attacking the fashion thing. I guess you forget the whole tight leather obsession she had during spirit, HAVING SEX in the Whats Simple Is True video (it was classy), and the not-intentional see-through dress of the grammies, and other things (wasn't she wearing a swimsuit in the PoY album jacket?). Jewel has always been sexy, although portrayed sometimes as modest through the press. Again, she was sexy, not sleezy or smutty. I admit, a couple of the pictures have been more revealing, but only a couple. Big deal. The album cover to 0304 is almost exactly like the cover of This Way, ecept 0304 is more colorful. Does color make something dirty? Anyways, besides three or four times, Jewels clothing hasn't really changed much, and hasn't really gotten more revealing. And besides all of that, I don't think clothing has to do with how good music sounds. Oi, I'm really sorry. Its okay for you not to like the music, but you didn't even listen to the album as far as I know. After you listen to it, I'll perfectly accept your opinion, except not on the fashion bit. And hey, its not like Jewel is going to be this way forever. Like me and others have said over and over and over, she will probably try a new genre or style or even do an acoustic album (shes mentioned it) next. And tell that Sarah person that the Intuition video is a JOKE. Even the critics who don't like Jewel or her album have mentioned the video being great and smart. And thats just what Jewel is aiming for with this album, sexy and smart. Others on this list have said if you don't get that this video is a joke you are pretty dense. Whoo, thats it. I'm getting sick of ranting in Jewel's defense non-stop when people just ignore it and act like I or anyone else has never ranted about before. Its getting horribly repetitive, and pretty pointless since you ignore whatever other e-mails have been sent to the list that kinda prove you wrong. From now on, I'm just going to ignore the e-mail or consider the person a little ignorant. Sorry if I came across as harsh, I don't mean to, but yeah. I joined the Jewel list once before for a short time, but for a specific purpose. You see, Jewel (even the "old Jewel") is really off my normal musical path. My all-time favorite performer-composer is Frank Zappa. In fact I generally divide my musical interests into three categories: Zappa, blues, and "other." I had early on, and without really listening to her, mentally put Jewel in the Britney Spears category. Then one night I caught a replay of her performance on Austin City Limits from some years ago, and I was absolutely blown away by her performance. After that I began to pay more attention when she appeared on talk shows and such, and I found I liked her music quite a bit, especially her unique vocal style. But when I tried to tell my wife about her, she was rather skeptical. I think she thought I was more interested in how Jewel looked that in her music. I kept telling her, "if only you could see that performance on Austin City Limits you'd know what I mean." That's the reason I eventually joined the Jewel list. (I since left and have rejoined recently to listen to reactio to 0304.) I asked if anyone could tell me how to get a copy of that performance, and a really nice guy by the name of Rob offered to make a dub and send it to me. (Thanks, Rob! We still really enjoy that tape, and have helped a lot of people "dicover" Jewel with it.). After I showed that tape to my wife, she became an instant fan. I bought This Way, my wife bought Spirit, and a friend burned us a copy of Pieces of You. We really liked them all, though we tended to favor This Way a bit (somewhat to my surprise, as I thought the POY would have been my favorite, due to being more acoustic.) Ultimately I also bought the DVD, A Life Uncommon, which has good live performances, some of which are quite excellent. Later, I even converted my step-daughter over to Jewel by showing her the ACL tape. Her tastes in music run towards early and mid punk, as well as Tool, Marilyn Manson, and obscure groups such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. She also like Tori Amos a lot, so that may have been the link that got her over, but even so it was quite amazing that she liked Jewel, as she was quite skeptical at first. Then came 0304. My wife rushed out to buy it before she was left for a weekend trip, as she wanted to bring it along. After we played it, she ended up leaving without it. It just did not work for us at all (my step-daughter's reaction was limited to "that sounds like crap" - she's not one to mince words). One of the main things that had attracted me to Jewel was the way she used her voice in so many different ways, often within the same song. It was fascinating and compelling, and she musically conveyed emotions well enough to sometimes send chills up my spine. I just don't hear that happening much (if at all) on 0304. And then there is the "dance/hip-hop" style musical accompanyment (At least I think that what it's called. I don't care much for most popular music in general, and avoid things such as hip-hop and rap like the plague I view them to be.) People on this list have talked about how the lyrics are still good on 0304, but I just can't sit through that awful music long enough to listen to them. I'd be better off reading them of the liner notes, or in a book of poetry. One way or another, there is something wrong with 0304. Whether it's the vocals, or the musical style, or something I can't define, it's that special something that Jewel had (and that I fervently hope that Jewel will have again) that reached outside of a fan base who generally like pop-oriented female vocalists (which I generally don't) to people of very diverse musical tastes, to who she was a major musical exception. She may well end up with more fans than she ever had before. When you make music that appeals to a broadly based pop audience (what I refer to as "the lowest common denominator") you can sell an awful lot of records (or, as I see it, a lot of awful records). You can even win Grammys and garner various other accolades, and you can certainly make a ton of money. But what you can't do is appeal to people of a more discerning musical taste who are outside the mainstream. I don't want to sound like a snob here (though that seems somewhat unavoidable). I'm not expecting Jewel to compose and perform music that is on a par with history's great composers, such a Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Mozart and Rachmaninoff (as Frank Zappa has done in his more serious efforts). I enjoy lots of music that's just fun music, such as Junior Brown, Louis Prima, Brian Setzer, The Reverend Horton Heat, Buckwheat Zydeco, or even The Trashmen, But what 0304 is, which I simply cannot tolerate, is boring, as is most of the popular music around today. 0304 sounds thin and plastic, and if there are great lyrics lurking in there, it doesn't make me interested enough to take the time to listen. Well, that's my rant for the day. I still look forward hopefully to future music from Jewel. The difference is that I won't buy before listening this time. That way I won't end up with fodder for our next garage sale, which is where I think our copy of 0304 is ultimately headed. I'll probably still recommend Jewel to others from time to time, but I will be very careful to steer them clear of 0304.
