Lets Just state for the record that -is not 19 anymore - -Jewel has been around rodeo's alot!.....i dunno what this has to do with anything..it just kinda freaks me out... - - Pieces of You sounded like she had a tape recorder and a journal to make her "sad" go away...oohh...Dark! Hallelujah .amen - - Spirit Sounded like a Christian Album gone terribly wrong..but in a good way! - -This Way was a hodge podge of Country, Pop love songs, and redone older cataloged jewel songs...what a fitting collage for having a long ass break. - - 0304 is to me more Techno than anything pop....sure there's some pop stuff in there but there's also "Haunted"...which screams "hey im a freak look im indie" which should please everyone groaning that jewel is now clad in mini-skirts. Jewel has never been one style of music...yes Rolling Stones articles and Jay Leno appearances seem to harp on Folk Rock van livin Jewel....but unless you copped a squat at Innerchange...I don't wanna hear how you miss your best friend Jewel. Another thing that seems to be irking my nerves .... Jewel's Wardrobe take a gander at some of the stuff she has worn pre-0304 her Whole Spirit tour looked like she had just hopped off the bus from the Bondage Festival and way back in the day of "Pieces of You" she wore litte dresses that made her look 13 years old to play on her naiveness. IMO. So in all the Changes that Jewel makes that just seems to rock everyones little worlds: Lets just look at some of the Jewel Constants..... 1. You can still watch jewel do 50 interviews and say the 3 same sentences everytime....yes be sure to set your VCR ...God is about to speak immortal words. 2. you can still get ripped off at jmerch/jewel emporium!...a 50 dollar tshirt?..sign me up! 3. West Kennerly Photos will always be here for our enjoyment!...great pictures of jewel in any settings 4. constant bickering on this list will always appear...its a def. "Constant" 5. Lenedra Loves you.......and don't you forget it! So in conclusion...whether it be all of your friends clutching onto their copies of Pieces of You and watching old home movies of their "lillith Fair" heyday when jewel sang such Un-pop hits like "YWMFM & WWSYS" or if its a young child on the street cursing Jewel in the window of Tower Records....Dry Heaving at the very sight of her pictures... Remember this simple fact... Jewel is Filthy ass stinkin rich and could buy and sell many of us at a drop of a dime As the Great Philosopher of our day "Justin Timberlake"..proclaims in joyous decree "Where is the Love?" these have been humble opinions by lil ole me, this email is for the simple pleasure of me needing to type and call jewel "filthy stinkin rich" if you do disagree with what this email states..you could infact have valid points but the lack of my caring makes those points null and void send comments and concerns to Wesllow@aol.com some restrictions apply, void where prohibited, not valid in Bethleham, Pennsyvania or Canada and all continental US states. xoxo- Wesllow ~The Redstick Indigo Angel~ "Of Course you'd like this music retard...YOUR JEWEL POP!"-Jamie Mathews ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 11:44:03 +0100 From: "Tom H" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel sounding like everybody else Just a few disagreements with this post, even though I fear it might get me a sly remark in Wesllow's next post :P... <<*Stand - does it sound like anyone else? Not in my opinion. It's very Jewel, just with a few more beats going on.>> We've already heard the Black Eyed Peas comparison, so there's that - as well as the fact that the beat sounds a lot like that awful Truth Hurts song... <<*Run 2 U - yeah, this kinda sound like Kylie Minogue, but I really like it. It's better than any Kylie song by far though.>> But we expect throwaway pop from Kylie, she's been doing it for 15 years. We expect quality from Jewel, and this ain't it. <<*Intuition - hmm.. I don't hear Shakira here, but some people do. If Shakira sounded this good, I would probably like her, but I don't.>> Listen to the chorus, where she accentuates the end of every line with a *very* Shakira-esque upswing. It's not just the accordian. <<*2 Become 1 - also very Jewel. Can't compare it to any other artist. I feel the Guy Chambers influence though.>> I can compare this to tons of other artists. It sounds like almost every ballad sung by a female in the 80s! <<*Haunted - Radiohead? You can't go wrong when compared to one of the greatest bands alive.>> Why people are comparing this to Radiohead I don't know. True, they've gone for the haunting vibe on this song, but Radiohead manage that so much better. The production of this song seems too calculated and obvious for those kind of comparisons. At a stretch, I'd say that Jewel's trying to sound a bit like Poe, but even that's a bit too much of a compliment for this song. It's good, yeah, but not *that* good. <<*Sweet Tempation - this has a different vibe, I'm not sure I feel Cure here, as Jewel intended to, but I just hear Jewel.>> Yet another song which could've easily been sung by a handful of other artists and nobody would care about the song at all. And if anyone thinks this sounds like The Cure then I would strongly urge you to listen to some Cure before I laugh in your face. <<*Yes U Can - ok, now you're talking. No Doubt? Debbie Gibson? Yes. So what? I like it.>> Then what's the point of your email? You were trying to prove something, but if you like the songs anyway then you shouldn't really care if its derivative... <<*U&ME=Love - the verses are very cool, IMO. It's very unique. The chorus are very fun and just light-hearted. Not the usual Jewel, so it may, of course, bring a lot of comparisons: Britney? Holey Valance? Do you really think they would ever sing a song like this? I really doubt.>> The point people are making is that the *production* of the songs is derivative, not the lyrics. And the sound of this song, and many of the others on the album, could easily be reproduced by a number of 'pop tarts'. <<*America - ok, who, on God's green earth, could sing this besides Jewel?>> Again, lyrically, you could be onto something. But we're talking production, and again it's nothing special. And you didn't even mention "Doin' Fine", the single-most depressing song I've ever heard, because it's the first Jewel song that I really can't stand. Let's fact it, Jewel's sound was never all that original, really. I think the main thing that annoys me about this album is that Jewel used to be compared to Bob Dylan, Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell and respected, talented *artists*. 0304 has some good songs, granted, but now Jewel is getting compared to Kylie, Shakira, and Britney... What went wrong? From the original post: <> Sadly, this is very true... If 0304 wasn't by Jewel I doubt a lot of you would give the album the chance you have - and I highly doubt a lot of you would be raving about it like you are. The only thing that has clouded my judgement with this album is my disappointment. True, it's not a bad album, but it's not a particularly good one either, especially by Jewel's standards. I'm not really upset by Jewel's image/sound change at all... I just wish she could've done it with a little more class and quality, and in about half of the songs on 0304 I really don't see that. Uh-oh... Let the flames begin. Tom ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 09:40:52 -0400 From: TFace151@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Outside Opinion All I have to say is GEEZE PETES! First of all I can't imagine anyone who is a big Fianno Apple Fan to be a big Jewel fan either. But come on, cut Jewel some slack. I don't know why everyone is so surprised. > Yes, "Intuition" is catchy, but what the hell is she doing? What> happened to the folk-rock? > > It's a tough debate, b/c artists like Jewel and Liz Phair are quick> to say "we're growing as artists, trying a "new" sound" ...blah blah> blah...> > Which, I personally have a hard time buying since the "new sound"> sounds like EVERYTHING else being played on the radio currently. > It simply saddens me when female rockers who once had depth and> exhibited courage in their music opt for a more main stream sound to> sell more records. In case you didn't notice, she tured with a band for "This Way", I would say the folk was kinda gone on that album, it was more of a rock album. And if you actually listen to the words on 0304, you will notice that hey lyrics are the same as they use to be. They have depth. And even though this a "pop" record, I don't really think is "sounds like everything out there" I mean I turn on my radio and all I hear is 50 cent or some other crappy rap song, and 0304 definately ain't ghetto rap. I don't know if Jewel progressed in her song style to sell more records, but if you listen to Jewel's it's been a very natural progression. Each record was a little more "produced" and after "Serve the Ego" This album was already on it's way. I think 0304 is just an extension of that, a natural growth that comes with beign a great artist. You can't be a great artist without growth or change, you would just become stagnet and irrelivant. > Then> once seeing> Jewel's CD cover in the store (I refuse to purchase 0304) she says, " I guess> Jewel's not modest anymore either, huh Mommy?" Jewel modest??!!! When was she ever really modest? And if you think that the outfit on 0304 is reveling obviously you haven't seen J-Lo's new video where she thinks she's in flash dance. Jewel has always sung about sex and has always been sexy. I do say now she is flaunting the sex a little more, but good for her! She is confident in who she is and she is always tastefull in what she is doing. I mean just watch the WWSYS video, she has on this tight little white shirt. And did you see the Jupitor video or even the standing still video? Jewel is dressed very sex in all those videos.> > She's 9. She sees it plain as day. So does everyone else > outside the Jewel> world. Apparently not everyone ouside the "Jewel World" or else her album wouldn't have benn #2 the first week out. And to make a General Comment, this list is for Jewel fans, people who like jewel and her music, if you just wanna bash her and say mean things about her, why are you on the list?? Just my thoughts, Teresa The sick of everyone saying Jewel Changed when it is obviously a natural progression of growth, and my husband who's not a big Jewel fans even agrees with that, angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 11:47:35 +1000 From: Fredsteve Subject: [EDA] 0304 debuts at #10 in Australia Hey Guys Jewel debuted at #10 with 0304 on the aussie album charts. A little dissapointing given that the single is doing so well (#4 again this week - - 5 straight weeks in the top 10)... but still respectable. I think the album will be able to stick around in the top 10 for the next few weeks at least. Someone posted this info a while back but I seem to have lost the info. Thanks, John the disciple ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 19:20:52 +0100 From: "Tom H" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: Outside Opinion <> Well I am, for one. It may surprise you, but Jewel and Fiona Apple once had a couple of similarities. Not any more... <> She toured with a band for Pieces Of You at times, as well as Spirit too... What's your point? The thing that's making people think that Jewel 'sold out' or lost herself is the fact that 0304 sounds, for the most part, very generic and the production sounds pretty cheap at some points. <> Please... Compare the lyrics of Doin' Fine or U + Me = Love to Jewel's old songs - you can't say they're up to the same standard! Even the 'hits' like Standing Still and Hands had way, way more depth. And, as easy as it is to say that the less lyrically-complex songs on 0304 are just 'tongue-in-cheek', Jewel used to do that much better too. Look at God's Gift To Women or Kiss Your Ass - they were tongue-in-cheek too, but they had a bit of bite to 'em that made them more interesting. <<"Serve the Ego" This album was already on it's way. I think 0304 is just an extension of that>> I can see how some songs on 0304 would be an extension of Serve The Ego... But only about half of them at most - I don't understand how Run 2 U or something has anything to do with that song... <> A lot of people see this as a step back, rather than a growth, which is where I think the problem lies. Personally, I think it's an interesting detour rather than growth - it definitely doesn't show much lyrical growth - but I'll be much more interested to see how she grows with the next album. <> Read the original post again - the only part that could be seen as 'bashing' was written on the Fiona Apple list, not by the author of the post. I really haven't seen much 'bashing' of Jewel over 0304 - it's all been constructive criticism... If my posts have come across as bashing, I apologise - I'm simply trying to get across my view, which isn't that 0304 is a completely bad album, just that it's disappointing to me, and nowhere near the standard of any of her three previous albums. Cheers, Tom. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 16:26:34 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel sounding like everybody else I agree with you at some parts, of course. And I totally forgot Doin' Fine, to show you how it isn't a very remarkable song, although I like it. After listening to the CD a lot, I've realised it's not my fave Jewel album, as I've said before. I like it a lot, it's great background music, but it is a little too pop for my tastes. But I understand and support Jewel for releasing it. Sometimes you just *have* to get something out of your head, even if it sucks, in order to keep moving. I believe she felt like she *had* to release this album, so she could move on. I doubt she'll keep the pop route. I expect the next album to be rockier, but I pretty much enjoy everything she releases. Oh, and about the lyrics, I really hope she'll write some longer lyrics and not just based on the catchyness. I understand that 0304 had to be this way, but I just think some of the lyrics in there are a little too short (even the songs are very short). Ok, that was it. Hi everyone... I'm new to the list...my name is Chris Lam and I guess I've been a fan of Jewel since her first album. Anyhow, I was wondering if someone can help me out and I.e., give me more info or direct me somewhere. I'm looking for I guess, what you guys call 'Angelfood' of Jewel concerts between the periods of 2001-present. Ideally, I'd love to purchase one from the acoustic concert she had recently. Can anyone help me out? Btw, I'm in Canada... Thanks so much! chris __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo!
