Hey Guys Well! The end is not upon us... as Jewel got her bullet back at pop radio this week, just like the dude at Atlantic told me she would. I wasn't around for the final Sunday update.. but I can tell you that as of Monday morning the song is #18 (unfortunately michelle branch, beyonce and pink all passed Jewel last week - but she passed 50 cent, who is on his way down... so she got one place back.. but dropped two from last week) with a +109 gain.... This is excellent news! It means the song is not over, not yet! At Hot AC she also backward bulleted... to #11 with a gain of +105 (on monday, again). However, not to worry - she'll get #10 back sometime this week and she's only 20 spins away from a decreasing Avril Lavigne. So there you have it! I'll keep you updated, as I always do. I heard the Black Eyed Peas song for the first time yesterday and it is grabage. It is probalby one of the worst songs i've heard on the radio in a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time, and that's saying a lot. And i heard no similiarities at all. Not even with the lyrics. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I think by comparing Jewel to some wanna be rap stars is absured and a HUGE insult to Jewel. The whole article can be read here: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2003-06-22-jinx_x.htm The Jewel excerpt is below... Mike _________________ Jewel, a former upstart who is now considered a pop veteran at 29, took a risk in defying critical and corporate expectations. Her current album, 0304, adds electronic dance music and R&B textures to her folk-pop foundation. "People ask me if I ever feel misunderstood, but I feel like until you have 25 records under your belt, you're going to be misunderstood," Jewel says. "How can people know what you're capable of as an artist if you aren't given the chance to show them?" In her liner notes for her fourth album, 0304, which entered the charts at No. 2 on Saturday, Jewel thanks Atlantic's Shapiro "for encouraging me to make the music I want to, regardless of label concerns." Shapiro concedes "there were some naysayers. But when Jewel started out, people told me I couldn't get her on alternative radio because they were playing all grunge. I knew that her doing something different was a risk, but it's my job to support that." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 12:38:58 -0400 From: "Chrissy Pfingst" Subject: Re: [EDA] horray... jewel gets her bullet back! Note the clever headline.. =) SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS Blond ambition is back! On June 8, Jane Krawkowski won a Tony for Nine. Jewel's Shakira-wannabe makeover helped land her 0304 at No. 2. Jessica Simpson got Punk'd and is set for an MTV reality series. Hillay Rodham Clinton's autobio moved an estimated 200,000 copies in its first day. Ellen DeGeneres continues to delight as a ditsy fish in Finding Nemo. And Reese Witherspoon returns in Legally Blonde 2, featuring a title track from LeAnn Rimes. This is distressing as it means we will have no one to torture, taunt, tie to a tree, and throw mud at! NO, I'M JUST KIDDING! We hardly ever do that! ;-) But seriously, for those that don't know, every year between 20 and 40 EDA's descend on the Woodstock, NY area to officially commemorate the incredible weekend that was Jewelstock - ugh 7 years ago - and unofficially to just have a damn good time. Last year I brought my friend Melanie (who's not an EDA but has done a lot with and for the EDAF) and her boyfriend Mike and literally the day after they got home they were already asking me if I knew the dates for next year! So, anyway, if you are on the fence about whether to come or if you hadn't thought of coming previously, I urge you to consider it. And no, we don't kneel around the campfire chanting Jewel's name. In fact, you probably won't hear much mention of her the whole weekend. If you're interested in attending, send an email to Tammy at AnnualBearsville@aol.com. And Larry, I wanna see you there this time! There's no such thing as "can't". If Eric can come from California, so can you! :-) Amy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 16:23:03 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel and Sean Paul collaboration >>That would be cool. =) Well, maybe not, hehe... Next year, I hope. Or, as they say on the Jewelish high holidays, "next year in Homer." It was neat hearing Jewel sing at the Soul City Cafe thingy last week. She started with U2 = 1 Luv If UB40 (one of those new songs from "Oh!Three - Oh! Four," with just 2 chords in it). Then (after I pleaded loudly and obnoxiously), she did Violet Eyes (I'm fairly certain it's not called "Violent Lies" or "Violin Ties"), then Carnivore (just for the screams from the crowd, no doubt; she really nailed it), then encored with Chime Bells. Check out Anne Heaton and the Susan Greenbaum band. They were my favorites of the finalists. Watching Susan jump up and down on stage was a highlight. - -=-Larry-=- - -------Original Message------- From: W1GGY2@aol.com {snip} And Larry, I wanna see you there this time! And what a night it was! Besides excellent performances from all the SCC finalists, a hilarious set from Jewel (she managed to squeeze a few songs amidst her comedy, too!) and a very funny surprise "stage contribution" from Jewel's dog George during our SCC Insiders Meet & Greet/Soundcheck, there were plenty of new friendships made that will certainly last into the foreseeable future. Although I unfortunately couldn't get to the hotel afterwards, I'm told there were also many incredible jams, with many of the SCC musicians playing together, into the wee hours of the night. Although Jewel took the stage first to kick off the night, she and Lenedra stayed until the very end and were very enamored with all the artists as well as the special feeling that seemed to permeate the room. I haven't seen Jewel in such a glowing good mood in quite some time. It's a testament to the passionate music as well as the integrity of the capacity audience that almost everyone was still there by the time Abby Dobson and her band closed things down with one kick-ass set of funky grooves at the end of the night. I'm sure many of you, as well as the artists, will be posting about their personal experiences at the SoulCityCafe Insiders message boards and I encourage anyone who would enjoy reading more to join us there. Something very special occurred and I know I'll never forget it. So now we're in production getting some of the highlights ready so all of you can enjoy watching and listening to these extremely enjoyable performances. There's also a Comcast Cable special now being planned for later this year, that will feature performances and footage from this very memorable event. As far as I'm concerned, it's impossible to pick favorites, so we'll be leaving that difficult job up to you. The plan is to have performances up on the Soul City Cafe site this Wednesday and then the final online voting will begin to decide who will hit the road with Jewel later this year! Stay tuned!
