I was checking out vh1.com's album page for 0304... and they have a "personnel" section which describes everyone that played on the album. They list Jewel as "vocals, guitar".... Now, in the liner notes Jewel's vocals aren't credited at all, and she isn't credited with any "guitar" parts. We had this same discussion when This Way came out... cause that was the case with this. I wonder if VH1 are mistaken, or if Jewel did in fact play guitar on this album. I dont' know how we can find out... but I'd like to know! Why is it so absolutely unheard of that Jewel might want to make happy music? Why is that so astounding? Can't she do that for one album without having to be a sellout? Did it ever occur to *anybody* on this list that not every person who's happy is faking it?! Guess what guys, it's not selling out if they want to do it, and how dare you say that if Jewel wants to do something, she shouldn't be allowed because for once you might not like her. Oh my god, how horrible that would be if there was one album you didn't like. How horrible that would be if she were to do what she wanted without regaurd to the feelings of a minute group of people. Better call the Red Cross right now, this is a disaster. And Michiel...please. That crap about how you don't like her "tacky business." Please. Yes you do. Either yes you do, or you don't until she gets naked. Many times it seems like you spout all this crap about her being a sellout but then as soon as she's half naked you've forgotten about it. The only feeling I've gotten about you so far is that you feel like "Hey, I don't care how she sounds really, just as long as she's naked doing it." But I've just heard the latter for the first time, and it's...wow, the songs are very, very similar. Justin sings on the chorus in near-falsetto, and so not onyl do the two songs have the same message, they have the same song structure.. Lyrical, wordy verses with a high-pitch, simpler chorus.. I think radio programmers would notice it too.. That said, people on here keep talking about 'Yes U Can' as a single, and I hope that the surveys reflect the same results. It's the PERFECT summer song, and while 'Intuition' isn't dead yet, if they release the song anytime throughout the end of July, I think 'Yes U Can' would be the best choice for a single.. It's got that successful No Doubt-type formula going on, and it's very bright and radio-friendly. Hopefully, Jewel's people do read these messages and take fans' opinions into consideration. And not just the polls for favorite song off the album. Look what happened with 'Break Me.' The typical Jewel fan favorite does not necessarily equal the best radio single. - -- Scott http://scott.rocket-fish.org/ http://syd.rocket-fish.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 2003 13:20:59 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] Problems with 'Stand' as single Scott wrote: >Wow, when people mentioned the similarities between Jewel's 'Stand' and >'Where Is The Love' by Black Eyed Peas, I was like "Hm, OK, so what, song >are similar all the time.." My problem with releasing that song as a single is that it is a dime-a-dozen pop song. Nothing new or unique about it at all. (and I did not know of this Black Eyed Peas song until just now). The "meaningful" lyrics in Stand have each been used countless times, even the EXACT same lyrical references to Marvin Gaye and Woody Guthrie songs. Nearly every "meaningful" lyric in this song is a cliche as old as the hills (another cliche!) Basically, "Stand" has already been released dozens of times the last 40 years, we don't need another version playing on the airwaves this summer. Mike N.P. Right before jewel played a song for us during the sound check her dog, George, took a crap on the stage! Funniest thing ever!! Jewel shrieked and everything... she was cracking up, as were we. George is the cutest thing!! Anyway, they're going to air this on Comcast some time and they're going to put clips on the soul city website so look for it sometime next week. The 1st verse is very unfriendly, IMO. The rest is very catchy. So, if Stand is a problem right now(because of Black Eyed Peas), I would like to see Run 2 U released. (shocked?) I am really digging this song and it's one of my favorites right now, even though I disliked when I first heard it. The 2nd verse is just SOOO good! It's a smooth transition from slick dance pop (Intuition) to down-to-earth dance folk (lol! that was good!). I could totally see it as 2nd single being very well receive from both Pop and Hot Ac stations. I also think releasing Leave The Lights On might be an interesting thing. I've seen some comparisons between this song and Nelly Furtado's Turn Off The Lights and, well, we know how well it did (although I don't see the similarities, other than the title...). I don't see other single material on the album, to tell you the truth (2 Find U is single material, but I just don't want it to be released). I think they should go with: Intuition Run 2 U Stand Leave The Lights On / Yes U Can (depending on how well the other singles do) It will be funny to see the 1st 4 songs released.
