Exactly - Mariah had a hard time selling enough tickets three years ago and the first few venues that sold for this tour sold poorly as well - so they rethought their strategy. Although - it's kind of weird, they fail to stay consistent with any of this - - due to here problems with exhaustion in the past they initially said that she wanted to do dates at a slower pace and play smaller venues to allow herself to stay planted for a longer period of time and not have to hop a plane after each concert. But, if you look at the schedule there are very few dates where she stays in the same city for more than one show and she doesn't seem to have a lot of time between shows. I think that each spin they put on it gets further and further from the truth, which is that she can't sell enough tickets at $100 each and she has too much pride to play an arena for $50 - because the lower ticket price would make that much of a difference. So, now she gets to play packed houses, increase the demand for her tickets and not drop her ticket price. But, anyone even remotely close to the industry knows that she just isn't a big enough draw anymore. Personally I'm waiting for a good promoter to put together the Will Smith - J Lo Double Trouble Tour and see how well that sells, just for the sheer experimentation sake. But, it'll never happen - not like I was rushing to see it anyway - I just wanted to know how well it would sell. Anyway..... Okay, I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers here but I just have to ask: Am I the only person on this list that is not a fan of "Stand"? Not in terms of whether or not it should be the next single, but just the song in general. I'm curious as to what it is about the song that seems to resonate with everyone. Let me qualify this by saying that lyrically, it is definitely one of the stronger songs on the albums but to me the rhythm of the song is completely unappealing. The first time I listened to the album and I heard the first few bars, I thought I was listening to a Dr. Dre album. And no, this is not a "It just doesn't sound like Jewel" complaint. I'm all for her trying new things. Also, and I know this has been mentioned before, but the chorus just seals the deal. It comes completely out of left field and I find the reliance on the "little girl" vocal intonation to be a little annoying and manufactured-sounding. Used sparingly, I find it to be incredibly endearing, I just prefer when she shows off the full range of her voice. (I know there are other songs on the album where she sticks primarily with the "little girl" sound too but I don't mind them as much because I like the melody and/or instrumentation.) I've listened to the song over and over to see if it would stick-not happening. Am I the only one? After eight years and three solid albums of contemporary folk and rootsy pop, Jewel Kilcher has up and decided she wants to be -- are you ready? -- a dance-pop tart. No, really. On her fourth album 0304, the singer-songwriter trades in her jeans and flannel for day-glo duds from a Flashdance revival, buries her acoustic guitar under thumping beatboxes, booty-wiggling basses and squiggly robo-synths, cops the staccato arrangements and slick production of the Backstreet Boys, and puts her angelic, crystalline voice to work on insubstantial fluff stuffed with deep and timeless sentiments such as, "I wanna hold u tonight / It'll be alright." No Jewel, it won't. Sure, there are a few smarter cuts that work -- Leave the Lights On and Haunted mine trip-hoppy veins, while Sweet Temptation and Yes U Can revive the new-wave sugar-buzz of The Bangles or Missing Persons. But the bulk of 0304 isn't going to save her soul -- or anyone else's. - --------------------------------------------------------- http://sandiego.citysearch.com/profile/258410/?p=1 Jewel "0304" Profile SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Jewel's 'dance-hip-hop-folk record' is playful (see: bellybutton) as well as serious (see: lyrics) By George Varga UNION-TRIBUNE POP MUSIC CRITIC June 5, 2003 It's a radical idea, to be sure. But what might the increasingly irrelevant Madonna sound like if she could actually sing -- instead of just mime and strike empty poses -- or if she had emotional warmth, technical chops and bona fide musical ability? CD review rating On a scale of 1-4 stars Some of the answers are contained, although presumably unintentionally, on Jewel's fifth and newest album, "0304," which the San Diego singer- songwriter calls her "dance-hip-hop-folk record." That description is reasonably accurate for this beat-happy album, co- produced by Jewel and Lester A. Mendez, who has previously worked with Shakira, Santana and Enrique Iglesias. Mendez also co-wrote 10 of "0304's" 14 songs with Jewel, who at 29 can sound as perky as a teen- pop diva albeit a teen-pop diva whose lyrics give shout-outs to Marvin Gaye and Woody Guthrie, skewer government lies and lament Martin Luther King's fading dream of equality for all (and that's just on the album's opening song, "Stand"). What "0304" does not sound much like, Jewel's liner notes to the contrary, is "a modern interpretation of big band music" with "a lot of swing." Indeed, the album bounces more than it swings, as Jewel gets her dance-pop groove on and moves to the music. The big band conceit, she has explained in recent interviews, was inspired by the war in Iraq and her desire to create music that (like the big band era that peaked in World War II) "makes you want to lose yourself in rhythm and feel passionate and young." Jewel also cites Cole Porter's lyrics as an inspiration. She doesn't achieve such a lofty level of urbane wordplay, but is to be commended for aiming so high. The titles of such number-happy songs as "Run 2 U," "2 Become 1" and the electric guitar-driven "Yes U Can" are a playful homage to Prince. Ditto the funk-fueled "U & Me = Love," which finds Jewel rapping much more deftly than Madonna does on the title track of her recent "American Life" album. A concerted effort to counter her image as an overly earnest troubadour, the often playful "0304" also mirror's Jewel's new quest to be "smart and sexy." Of course, longtime fans might argue she achieved that goal a decade ago, when she was forging her sound as a solo act at such San Diego coffeehouses as the Inner Change and Java Joe's. But the earthy waif that was is now presenting herself as a hottie, as demonstrated by "0304's" midriff-baring cover photo. And don't overlook the video for the En Vogue-ish sounding "Intuition," which finds Jewel cavorting in hot pants and miniskirts as she parodies both blind consumerism and preening-stars-cum-corporate-shills. (The song, already a hit on multiple radio formats, is -- ahem! -- the cornerstone for Schick's national advertising campaign for its new "Intuition" shaver for women. But never mind that.) Granted, some fans may be taken aback by "0304's" glossy sound and such suggestive songs as "Leave the Lights On," which has a moody chord- progression that unexpectedly evokes the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and Ten Years After's "I'd Love to Change the World." But even though the album sounds like a perky detour, rather than a final destination on Jewel's multifaceted musical path, it bears up well to repeated listenings. It also contains several songs, including "U & Me = Love" and "Sweet Temptation," with major pop-radio hit potential, as well as such finely crafted ballads as "2 Find U" and the tender "Fragile Heart." There are some miscues (the mellotron-drenched "Haunted" suggests a trip-hop song by the Beatles, with overwrought, Robert Plant-styled vocal wails to boot). But Jewel is savvy enough to make "0304" more than a foolish game, and gifted enough to make even her lightest dance- pop confections endearing, if not enduring. - ----------------------------------- http://ae.boston.com/music/newondisc/reviews/jewel.html Jewel: 0304 By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 06/06/2003 With Britney lying low, Madonna having grown up, and Christina just getting too weird, it now apparently falls upon Jewel to breathe some new life into bubblegum pop. This is a surprise album from Jewel, who had been carving out a reputation as a brainy folk-pop artist who was not afraid to let her spiritual side show. However, this release is mostly escapist fluff that represents a giant step backward for her, though it may be well-placed commercially. Jewel adopts some trendy, electronic beats that make her sound like a junior-varsity version of Madonna, but it's the gooey lyrics that really sink this project. What happened to Jewel the poet? This time we get doggerel like "Run 2 me, I'll run 2 u, let me crash into u" (from the plastic "Run 2U") and "If you want me, dear/ just beckon me, dear/ and I will appear" (from "Leave the Lights On"). In the liner notes, Jewel writes that she hopes the album will "make you feel young and sexy and smart." She doesn't add that it might also make you feel embarrassed to listen to some of it. The record has a couple of interesting tracks in "Stand" (a topical song that asks for brotherhood) and the pretty "2 Become 1," but for the most part, this is a candy-coated side trip that has an air of desperation. - -------------------------------------------------- http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/reviews/2003-06-02-jewel_x.htm Many-faceted Jewel even more polished in '0304' By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY Has any popular artist shown more growth over the past five years than Jewel? Her last album, 2001's This Way, established the blond minstrel, one of several sensitive young women who became poster girls during the Lilith Fair era, as a more mature singer/songwriter and a performer of considerable force and grace. Jewel explores more adventurous rhythms with 0304. With her new outing, 0304, Jewel raises the bar again, exploring more adventurous rhythms and textures while sustaining and nurturing her folk-pop sensibility. The delightful R&B and dance-music flourishes on Stand, Run 2 U and the single Intuition all co-composed by Cuban- American tunesmith Lester A. Mendez, who also co-produced the album with Jewel dispel any doubts that this neo-hippie can get her groove on. Other tracks incorporate jazz, rock and even new-wave nuances with an easy, playful elegance that never feels forced. Jewel's lyrics, too, seem wittier and wiser, less starry-eyed, though her fundamental social and romantic idealism remain resolute. "I am tired of waiting/So this time I'm leaping," she sings on the gently sinuous Becoming. "I reach beyond myself." If more mainstream artists were encouraged to take that approach, the music industry might not be in such dire straits. - ------------------------------------------------- 3.5 stars out of 5 Jewel 0304 Atlantic, 2003 Buy CD Jewels 0304 has been touted as the singers Ray Of Light. It may be a stretch, but like Madonnas benchmark opus, 0304 reinvents its subject and jumpstarts a career on the wane. Like Ray Of Light, the album breaks little musical ground and is, in fact, more pop than electronica, but it also presents one of the most startling--yet oddly fitting--transformations in pop history. In many ways, Jewel is simply fulfilling her destiny; shes become the pop tart her critics have accused her of being from the very start. But just one look at the cheeky music video for Intuition, the albums first single, and its clear shes in on the joke. Jewels music sounds much better now that shes dancing! reads a fake TRL crawl. Whats more, if youre going to sell out (and for fans of the singers more earnest, more organic work, thats exactly what Jewel is doing), at least do it with an infectious pop song like Intuition. She urges us to follow our hearts but then taunts, Sell your sin/Just cash in. (Its not all tongue-in-cheek, though: you can currently hear the French accordion of Intuition in a commercial for a razor of the same name.) Like Madonnas own American Life, Jewel takes a few shots at the American dream on the sugary Stand and America, a track the singer claims her record label made her change out of fear of litigation. (What remains are swipes at Bush, The Osbournes and self-tanner, as well as a shout-out to banished director Roman Polanski.) A few tracks on the album successfully capture the essence of folktronica--namely the thumping Run 2 U and jazzy, trip-poppy Leave The Lights On--but songs like the retro, new wavy Yes U Can and the catchy U & Me = Love wouldnt sound out of place on a No Doubt record. In fact, 0304 is less Ray Of Light than it is Rock Steady. You can take the guitar out of the girls hands but you cant expect her to stop rocking.
