Sorry guys - but as it's code is written they didn't leave you with anything but the F11 prompt to get to view the page in it's entirety. With the scrollbars and resizing = zero (among other things), they didn't leave anything for the user to do. However, I don't think that the resolution should matter, or the size of the monitor. Luckily, they didn't make some of the same mistakes that a lot of other web-designers make, even when developing a site for a very large company - many designers have nice computers with 17" or greater monitors - so they write the site to appear as they would like it to on a monitor that is the same size as their own. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. It's totally unprofessional to design a website with pixels sizing so that it only appears properly on a larger monitor screen - this is how a lot of sites that you go to have a horizontal scroll on the bottom - very annoying and very unnecessary. The designers did get this much right - instead of using pixels you can either use a percentage, which is usually the simplest - or you can do it as they did and prompt it to use the available height and width. Either way is just as effective - I like percents myself, but I don't use as many scripts usually as they did. So, since I have a 15" monitor - and I don't have a problem viewing the site (although, I do use the F11 key) I have to wonder if it's not a browser limitation that is causing most of you to have difficulties. But, I sincerely doubt that it's a resolution issue. Cut J-Team a little slack - I'm sure that they see the problems - but, once again, the more people you involve in something the more chances for error there are. They have hired out to get this site made and they can't likely make the needed improvements themselves. At a guess - with the launch of the new unedited site only being yesterday - they are looking to take a laundry list of things that need to be tweaked to their designer all at once. I'm sure that they hear your complaints - but this has obviously been a very busy month - redesigned site, new unedited site, new album, promotional blitz, new book. I'm sure that they'll get the bugs worked out of everything soon enough. I think they went back to the basics - and I really like it - it's the first Metallica album I've been excited about it 15 years or so. Out of sheer principal I burned a copy and did not buy one (both to not compete with Jewel and over the whole Napster mess - but hey let's not reopen that can of worms). I think that they purposely went for a rawer sound and approach - I'm sure that they had their reasons for the way that the drums sound or the lack of much lead guitar. But, it's been a long time since I put in the new Metallica and pumped my fist while I drove (they were on a Monsters of Rock tour with The Scorpions, Dokken and Van Halen the last time I remember doing that). I'm sure that the guitar solos are in short supply only because they determined that it didn't fit the context as well as they would have liked. Overall - BIG thumbs up. They don't make them like they used to - but they didn't make this like they have been either. Other than that - I haven't given it enough listens to give a more educated take on it - but I like it far more than anything else since I was buying the new Metallica on vinyl and laughing at the people in the store who were clamoring over Duran Duran. At any rate - I think that you'll find that Jewel has quite a few crossover fans from people who listen to heavier genres as well. When someone is the genuine article like she is you find that people who will allow themselves to be open-minded will gravitate to it regardless of the genre. Later, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 14:06:32 -0400 From: Lseids@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Time Magazine Review so so Here's the time magazine review for all interested: Lightened Up - -Jewel's pop attitude is new. The sounds are not. Jewel was a big deal a few years back - in spite of herself. She was a pop singer with a nice voice, but she dispensed her hippie homilies with a spooky intensity, as if she thought her words were closer in meaning to Toni Morrison's than Toni Braxton's. Her popularity proved that people will put up with a lot as long as they can sing along to the chorus. (I think we should all be offended by that one!) On her last two albums the hooks mostly disappeared, and so did the fans. Jewel has taken the hint. 0304, produced by Lester Mendez agressively mines rap, pop and dance in search of something that'll get you moving. Mendez isn't picky, and the first single, "Intuition", opens with an accordian riff inspired by a Ms. Dynamite song. Still, it's a good riff, and intuition is a tight, erotic song. Even Jewel is swept up by it, purring something about letting your mind go. On "Doin' Fine, she keeps things weightless, singing, "Come on baby, let's just have fun/Let's breathe stardust into our lungs"." There are a few sanctimonious lapses, but for the most part 0304 has the spirit of a summer pop record. Like all pop records, though, it rises or falls on the strength of its hooks, and while 0304 works relentlessly to sweeten your day, it isn't so good at keeping your attention. Mendez's beeps, burps and rythym changes are pretty familiar by now, and the slow songs really sag. It's a summer record, but maybe summer 2000. - J.R. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 14:13:15 EDT From: StuartnDee@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: The Jewel lip-syncing issue I think they use a backing track that has some of the beat tracks and her harmony vocals on it during the chorus and thats what you hear as strange.
