Ah, irony. Growing up I thought it had something to do with ironing. I was a very confused child. I knew before I even heard Intuition that it was all about satirizing the modern pop scene. Upon first listen, though, I thought... This isn't satire. She's gone too far and has BECOME what she's trying to satirize! That's always the danger in parodies or satire. It would be like if the Simpsons set out to do an episode where they make fun of after school specials, but instead ended up doing an after school special. Boy I was wrong. I listened to it again. And again. And again. I found myself enjoying it both as a satire and a song itself. Now I can't help but laugh. Anyone who's read Revealing Jewel (if you haven't, I suggest you pick it up) knows that she has a bizarre sense of humor, and sometimes people just don't get it. Remember the story of the German audience completely not getting the Steve Poltz pot story, or the audience that was aghast at Steve "beating" her? To us, it seems crazy that people could miss the humor in that. But entire audiences have. So looking back at my initial reactions to Jewel's new sound and "image," I too thought I was crazy to have missed the humor. The most important thing is that she's having fun doing this, and I'm having a blast listening to and watching her. Part of having fun is not taking things too seriously (like fashion, hair, what color nail polish she uses on her middle toe on Wednesdays after the full moon, etc.). And if you don't "get it," well, I'm sure Jewel would say she's sorry for all the times she forgot to imply something in between the lines. - -Dan *Angel needs a name!!!* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 12:35:51 -0400 From: "Joe Kunis" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel lip-synching Every time I have seen Jewel perform "Intuition" it seems like she is lip-synching, what does everybody else here think? Most of us on this list have tried to defend her due to the crassness that was starting. Fine if you don't like something that she does or put out there is nothing wrong with that. But Cripes !don't tear her down and crucify her for it. There is such a thing as constructive criticism ,but I haven't heard much of it on this list. Am i the only one thinking she has no clue how to dance?! It looks annoying as hell when she keeps on putting up her left hand above her head. If she's really into this sexy image, i think she should at least get some kinda of dance instructor and learn how to dance. Her dancing just plain sucks.>>> Have you ever seen her live???it's not about dancing its about the music.....she by her own admisson and self depricating humor knows she really can't dance...BTW how many people on this list can't really dance?????and to the people who said she had no rhythm one has to have it in order to be a musician so what if she can't really move like a professional dancer she moves as the music moves her. just my two cents, ML ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 13:06:10 EDT From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel lip-synching Seen her do it live 4 times - if she's lip synching she's pretty freakin' good at it. Two of those times were for TV show tapings as well - so before anyone says concerts are different from TV.... two concerts, 2 TV tapings - each time sitting (standing) very near - no lip syncing. In other words - I doubt it very much. Jewel performed these songs with backing tracks, not a live band. The band "band-synced"... if you will. You can tell just cause both songs sounded exactly like their album versions musically, whereas live the band ususally varies certain things. One major example is that during the live version of Intuition there is usually real drums in the chorus, which were missing this time. Also, at the beginning of Standing Still on the album version that opening guitar riff goes twice... whereas live they normally only do it once. Jewel started where they normally start live, and then instantly realised she was a bar or two ahead of the track so she extended the first verse to let the track catch up. It's funny - at the beginning of Standing Still you hear the acoustic guitar start and see Mark Oakley instantly jump to attention and start "playing" the riff. Not exactly sure why they did this. There must've been a good reason cause she's played both songs live recently several times - live to the point where they don't even use the drum loop for Intuition - the drummer plays electronic drums (as he did on Conan last night). So there's no reason why THEY couldn't play it. Possibly something to do with the size of the venue and the band's ability to "hear themelves" etc. Also maybe the setup and takedown time for the whole band is too long unless the instruments are just props. All Jewel's vocals were definitely live though... and the backup singers too. I guess Jewel would rather have the band pretend to play than stand there alone performing to what would obviously be a backing track. I agree with her... having a band even pretending to play looks a LOT better than someone singing by themselves on the stage. Visually, it doesn't make sense for them not to be there. These huge venues are tricky like that too... and I know Jewel would never do it if she had a choice. She has always written about sex - It's absolutely true. The emails are a riot though. This is not a new topic for Jewel. I hope you didn't think she was a virgin. Ha! If you did, you haven't been listening very closely all these years. But, it doesn't mean she can't still be innocent, optimistic, sensitive and smart... all constant messages in her lyrics. Also, a note on 0304 - what's not to like! If it wasn't Jewel, would you like it any better? You don't have to be so hard on her - she's gotta play the game to stay in the game and I think she's doing well sticking to her own terms with a little added sex appeal stuck in there. Who cares. It's fun. Laurie. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 14:43:26 -0400 From: FreckledAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] short shorts and other such prophesizing... cizing? Dave wrote: "The more and more this list becomes about what Jewel wears the less and less I want to be a part of it. Can we try to remember that the reason we were drawn to Jewel in the first place was because of her words and music not because of her hair clothes and makeup?" Dave, lighten up a bit. I think people on this list are clearly fans of Jewel and nobody's being malicious...personally, I am drawn to Jewel for the love and music and her playful and creative way of expressing herself musically....deeply emotional, beautiful voice and songs that hold up, etc...but I think if people want to comment on other things that's fine, too...I mean, I usually ignore that stuff but when michiel posted those pics of Jewel in the short shorts I had take a peek and I thought it was pretty funny that she wore them....not that I give a crap about what she wears for the most part, but clearly she has fun with dressing up and I think people can comment on whtever they want...from the serene to the mundane ... I think we're all here b/c we love Jewel and this is a pretty democratic list I mean as long as people are respectful of each other etc...a little "shallow" commentary here and there never killed anyone...let's take the shallow along with deep, baby. I don't care what color nailpolish she's wearing but those shorts reminded me of that Frog and Toad children's story where Toad is embarrassed to get out of the water with his bathingsuit on and then when he finally gets out Frog and the Turtle and everyone starts laughing 'cause he does look funny.....ok, I digress, but Jewel seems to enjoy playing around with fashion and sometimes she scores big and other times it falls a little flat.....I think the music is the most important thingby without a doubt but hey, she's the one being playful about fashion and people are allowed to banter a bit as long as it's all in good fun...as long as this list doesn't digress totally into what color lipstick she's wearing and I think it's the interviewers that often ask her those kind of dumb questions when she'd rather talk about music and other subjects...but, hey, she's a girl and she's having fun and looking great and doing her thing...whatever's clever... I love that sometimes Jewel is slightly oblivious...it's that ability to stay focused and steadfast with a twinge of naivete and a lot of wisdom as well that makes her so intriguing enough blabbering from me..... ;) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #263 ***************************
