Maybe she intentionally used the F word, intentionally bleeped it and (obviously) had it "bleeped" in the printed lyrics in the liner notes, all as a part of her statement about the sad state of pop music in the years 03 & 04. What are we to believe? Jewel censored a word. She must be selling out! ;p Seriously guys. Just because she is doing things the way she likes, its not "Screw you, its my way or the highway, fuckers." Its only one word, and not something to get worried about. Jewel herself said the album was full of little ironies. Actually censoring something in a song that critiques America (in some ways), get it? Or maybe it just is a censor because its a bad word, and nothing else. Maybe she cursed but in the end, didn't want a parental advirsory sticker or label on her cd, since her fanbase covers ages 1-100. I find it particulary ironic that 90% of the people who mentioned this censor have said "f*** " instead of "fuck." (sorry if its a rule here not to use swear words on this list, I'll remember in the future, but it was kind or necesary for this post I guess.) Come on guys, don't get worked up over nothing big at all. I don't agree with censorship but this is not something to get worked up about. As great of a song as it is, when a single is released, the programmers get to choose whether or not they will add it to their playlists. With this particular song, I fear a "Break Me" part 2 situation-we all love it but radio doesn't. Granted I've never been one to care what is "radio friendly" or the latest thing but I'm taking into consideration the larger picture of the album's longevity. I for one would love to see this album remain on the charts throughout the summer if not longer and unfortunately, a lot of that has to do with how "accessible" the singles are. I mean I personally will continue to enjoy my favorite songs but I just want as many people as possible to be exposed to what we already know and love. Besides the opportunity to give a big fat FU to the critics/haters who think this new sound and image won't fly. Just my $.02. Did anyone consider the possibility that "f**king" is censored out of America as a commentary on censorship? That's what I thought it was. Jewel is allowed to use ONE swearword and not have an explicit lyrics sticker on the front, which means the album can still be carried in chains like Walmart and Target. So the censorship has NOTHING to do with business reasons. If Jewel felt strongly against having a swearword in her song she wouldn't have written it that way. I think she's doing it to make a point about censorship in America. What do you guys think? Steve. PS - I think it's funny that everyone immediately jumps to the "she's bowing to corperate policy" solution. lol. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2003 18:33:33 -0700 From: "Missy" Subject: Re: [EDA] Next single-not your favorite song I think Haunted might be a good choice. It's a different side of Jewel.. I don't think we should vote for the same old stuff, IE Run 2 U, to be the next single. Sorry - but the singles on This Way didn't do that great. Leave the Lights On & Stand, and Haunted and Yes U Can, would be AWESOME. Just my two cents. I feel like this line and the censoring of it was intentional from the beginning. I mean honestly, she says trucking right before, it's so first grade obvious what's word is going to come next in the rhyme. I feel like if she really did want to swear in the song she would have used a better line with it. The song is all about her view on America right now, and censorship is a big deal in America. I think it was just an interesting way she wanted to get that point across. It would also work because of the marketing that could be done for the beverage she is singing about. http://www.sobebev.com/index.asp :) Does nobody else hate the attempted communication with whales on 2 Find U?
