Hey Guys Beyonce is having a Pay Per View show on June 14th! Jewel is going to be there as one of Beyonce's "guest performers", according to Jewel's website! I guess they must have really gotten along well at that Diva's thing! Cool! Steve. PS - I think the Jewel: Unedited thing looks pretty good actually. $40 is a year isn't that much... a lot of bands do that. Dave Matthews is one that comes to mind. When you're paying any amount of money like that all of a sudden the management have this obligation to perform a service for you... unlike what they do now which is just kinda for promotion and cause they have to/want to... but it's not like they're obligated based on a fee you've paid. So these types of payment sites often tend to be very good and very well updated because the ethical obligation to be that way and provide everything advertised is there. Know what I mean? Plus, knowing the kinds of things that Alan has deep down in his Jewel audio vault is enough to make me want to join. He literally has 99% of everything Jewel's ever performed. So the things we might be privvy to... well, even the IDEA of it is enough to make me wanna join! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 18:35:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Sean Ryan Subject: [EDA] i think jewel is behind My personal opinion-----the cd doesnt bother me, its ok---but it was aolt less than what i thought it would be I think jewel is running behind on the music ind. Shes at the end of the tail. A new Popular kind of style will erupt and two years later she'll finally do songs in that style.......but by that time its all over and there is something new. I think she would have had a lot more success if her albums TW and 0304 were released 2 years ago. When the up beat popy was in. Most people have moved out of that and in to the r&b type stuff. I thkn the best thjing she could do is think ahead. She needs to find a style that is going to attention becuase she came in with it first--not something that someone else has done allready. That is what made POY so popular---no one had the guts to release an album of that style during the Grunge era of the 90s. I really think that she could that again. She needs to stand out---and this just puts her in the hat with everyone else...... Here, here! thank you Rob couldn't have said it better myself. I too stopped for the most part reading Michiel's posts ahwile back. Not the first EDA to shit me to tears. I have no empathy for the download card dealie, I live in Australia... far off distant planet that not a lot happens, but I can say one thing there is in existentce, despite wonderful technology of today, human error and lets leave it at that. I am just about to go and check out the new site!. Also on the mention of that E! review, I don't usually read reviews cuz 9 times outta 10 they're completely biased and that defeats the purpose of being a review. But it was a bit harsh, but hey I'd like to know who they'd give a good one to. One more thing forgive my ignorance, but for my quote I don't know who the woman was on the couch (or the other 2 people for that matter) on Leno.... Missy & Michiel, First of all, I'm going to say this for the whole list to read, because I'm SURE I'm not the only one who feels this way. A release day hissy fit? (WOOHOO!!!) ;) Come on, now. Is that really necessary? Don't we all have something better to do today? My advice -- Missy... stop reading Michiel's posts. I did it about a month after I joined the list. I check up on him and read one post every month or two. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt & say that it's just that his grasp of our language is not the best, but he never ceases to say things that are crude, sexist, or just plain ignorant, so... just ignore him. So he says things you don't like. Big deal. Just don't read it. Michiel -- Say what you want. It doesn't really bother me. I have better things to worry about... things that happen off the internet, in my real life. Besides... that's why we have junk mail filters & delete buttons. Chances are I didn't even read it. But, think about this for a second... did it ever occur to you that if you'd just shut up once in a while, you wouldn't annoy people so much? Perhaps you don't care, but... I'm just sayin'. Okay, I'm done. And if you got the significance of my parenthetical exclamation, email me privately & I just might send you a prize. ;) ...Rob _________________________________________________________________ Get mobile Hotmail. I was really interested in Jewel:Unedited, thinking it may be like Jewelink. Then I realized you had to pay 40 dollars now. It includes things such as download clips, goodies, contests, and even messages from Jewel. This is all and fine, but it just hits a wrong spot with me. Getting Jewel's personal messages to us (especially when it was just the EDAs...) was always a very special thing. Now that they realize how much we love it, we have to pay for it. I have to say I don't like that. I guess its nice to pay for some cool extra downloads... But still. The feature is overpriced, I have to say. 40 dollars a year for a sub scription. This is especially bad for me since I live in Canada, this will cost between 60-70 dollars a year for this service. 60-70 dollars a year for Jewel's messages, contests, and some dl clips. See what I mean? And know whats worse? I'm still going to pay for this despite it being so overpriced and kind of "eh" in my opinion. The whole message thing just bugged me. Its not special anymore, its just paying to read a message from Jewel. Oh well. I havn't gotten my copy of 0304 in the mail yet. I ordered from amazon.ca, and they told me before that all of their products come directly from the american warehouse, so hopefully I will get a download card. The list is extremely active today, obviously. I'm wishing Jewel the best of luck with her CD and for #1 sales! Also, I'd like to say that being a fan should never be as complicated as it is. Special sub scriptions, crazy lists that have bickering and problems, people making rude comments to bring down the album, even some EDAs are bringing down the album in a rude manor. If you dont enjoy the album, thats fine. Just dont be rude about it and bring it down. If you still want to be an EDA, you should at least be kind and still support Jewel's most recent efforts. Or at least be kind to each other. This is release day and I read so much bickering. If people know its bugging others, why can't they stop? And why does everyone else have to jump on the wagon and join in against others? In the end only kindness matters, right? I just wish everything was more simple and less complicated right now. I can admit that it was less about the technology and glam and everything else back in the beginning, but change is inevitable I guess. I love Jewel and I love this new album, its just that a lot of related stuff has been very disheartening to me. Sorry. Peace, Mark (I'd rather see the world from another angle) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 22:02:58 -0400 (EDT) From: "kevin maguire" Subject: [EDA] UnEdited Sub.. Is that what the Album title should have been? 3995? j/k kind of a smart ass at times, sorry mike... But you know as fans, we make the artist... we spend all this money on CDs, Concert tickets, JMerch... And now especially us EDAs if we want a deeper look into who we already support and have helped make famous and kept around, we need to dump more mooooola. And 39.95 is not cheap.. some one is BLING BLING-in' But maybe like 10 of us or so can share a sub scription... So whos coming with me? besides flipper the fish...... Ok - I'm not entirely sure why people feel the need to take the day of release of Jewel's newest effort to tear it down among other things. I'm with Rob - I delete e-mails from known e-mail addresses that have commonly pissed me off. There may be some out there that see Dave0828@aol.com and do the same thing. That's cool - it's all good. As far as 0304 goes, Jewel has done what she set out to do. She wanted to make a fun album that people could enjoy. She's not behind the times by not picking up on the trend that a lot of people say ended recently. If she is behind in anyway it's behind on trends that ended 15 - 20 years ago in the 80s. Let's face it, quite a few of these grooves lend to Paula Abdul, Cindi Lauper and the Bangles more than they do Shakira and Britney (at least from whatever I've ever gleamed from their radio singles and what has managed to stick in my head over the years). Jewel has never been overly concerned with being timely - as evidenced by the fact that she was heard in between Soundgarden and Nirvana when she first hit and Shakira and Eminem now. Where are Soundgarden and Nirvana? Ok - they are now pretty much the Foo Fighters and Audioslave - my point is, Jewel has always done her own thing. That's why many people who are on this list have received this e-mail. Jewel actually has accomplished what she wanted to - she made a fun album in a time of much social and political tension. This really isn't unlike years ago - she stuck out then because she was one singular ray of light in a grunge landscape. Maybe this will stand out now and maybe it won't - but if she was so worried about trends she wouldn't have even released this album. She's always done what she wanted to do - she had an itch to make an album like this - and she scratched it. Let's respect her for that much. Let's not sit here and tear it all down. I saw this happen on Sheryl Crow's board when C'mon C'mon came out. All throughout the press you could have read how hard Sheryl had worked on that. Then, along come all of her most loyal fans to rank it 3rd or 4th behind previous efforts. Now, Sheryl doesn't read that forum - but, you can be sure that it got back to her. How must that feel..? Your most loyal fans just want to talk about how it doesn't measure up the day it's released, after all y our work. If you don't think that Jewel works hard - check out the recent and current promotional schedule. It's not easy to be in so many places in such a short time. She's worked very hard with very little time off. Not every album is going to be better than the last album. But, I believe that Jewel's best work is ahead of her anyway. I mean - look at Van Halen - they had Diver Down and followed that up with 1984 in short order (alright, that may be a bit of a reach since a lot of this list wasn't alive then - trust me on this one). At any rate - to come out and flame the album then flame others on the list really isn't what Jewel or the list is all about anyway. Jewel first attracted me because of the passion in her writing and her live shows, it's boundless and far eclipses many other artists (btw, for those who haven't had a chance to see this stuff live yet - Jewel live is Jewel live and this stuff translates a lot better than you'd expect). She has her convictions - and decided that she was going to do this kind of album and did it. But, the spirit of Jewel's music has never seemed to me to be about bickering and sniping - take the good and leave the rest. Besides, it's a competitive marketplace - there is a lot to choose from. Check out some other artists for now if you don't like this - but come back when the next one is out - Jewel doesn't disappoint very much does she? - need a recommendation - go check out Lucinda William's World Without Tears - 0304 is having a hard time keeping that one out of my CD player as we speak. Listen to it - if it's not exactly what you are used to imagine if Jewel had written it and called it 0304. Anyway - there's a lot of other music out there to enjoy too - Jewel's experimenting, we can to. As far as the membership fee of $39.95 to be a Jewel insider, in the scheme of today's record industry this actually isn't that bad. It's almost as much a necessity to a major artist as luxury boxes are to a major league stadium or ballpark. Go check out all the people that are peeved at the promises that Fleetwood Mac gave when they guaranteed all sorts of things as benefits to their $60 fee. Go see how much Kiss and Aerosmith want to charge for a backstage experience and a seat in the first 5 rows - there are three zeros involved here. Talk about trying to sap every dollar you can from your public. I'm personally going to gladly pay the $40. I'm going to remember that Jewel may be the most accessible mainstream artist around and how good she is to her fans. I'm betting that dollar for dollar we'll get much more from her than we would anyone else. How many other major artists allow their fans moments in the spotlight and let them on stage RIGHT NEXT TO THEM? How many times have you really seen Jewel refuse a fan almost anything? Not many - and let's face it, she is human, we all have moods - far less than any other artist of her stature. I'm going to give Jewel the benefit of the doubt - and I don't do this blindly - I've seen from experience how well she treats her fans. I'm going to eagerly anticipate the fall tour - the next album and whatever else there is to follow. For all that she has already given us as fans - THANK YOU JEWEL!!!!
