I doubt there'll be backup dancers involved. She's using them in the video as a joke, but I doubt she'll take it as far as a concert-spoof.. I think the farthest she'll go with concert production will probably be some funky lighting and maybe projections of some kind. backup dancers isn't going to happen. Steve PS - everyone should read Scott's post ... because he articulated what I was trying to say about the song being kind of a hidden tongue-in-cheek, almost dark (he used the word jaded) critique of pop culture. the more i listen to it, the more i think it's the case. but i also agree that on face value it's fantastic too. plus his comparison to new-school garbage was right on the money. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 20:55:49 +1000 From: Stephen Hallowes Subject: [EDA] how to record a higher quality version Hey Anyone with a minidisc player and AOL - listen up! I'm SURE that with a bit of patience, you could record the single off the computer onto your minidisc, and then transfer it back into the computer at a higher quality. They seem to have blocked recording it as a WAVE... somehow.. but they can't control the sound coming out of the output of your computer into your speakers! So plug into the output of your computer (the speaker output will do) and into your minidisc input and record. Then do the opposite. But make sure you record back into the comp at a high quality level - like 192kbps and 44khz. Anyone who can do that - email me and I'll post the higher quality version on my server ... with good bandwidth! There are two parts I can't quite make out: Im just a simple girl In a high tech digital world I really try to understand All the powers that rule this land They say Miss Js big butt is boss Kate Moss cant find a job In a world of post modern fad What was good now is bad Its not hard to understand Just follow this simple plan Follow your heart Your intuition It will lead you in the right direction Let go of your mind Your Intuition Its easy to find Just follow your instincts(?) You look at me but youre not quite sure Am I it? Could you get more? You learn cool from magazines You learn love from Charlie Sheen If you want me Let me know I promise I will say ?? CHORUS REPEAT You got something that you want me to sell? Sell your sin just cash in You got something that you want me to sell? Youll love me, wait and see. If you want me Dont play games I promise it wont be in vain Uh-uh-uh CHORUS REPEAT - --------------- Read those and try telling me there's not something going on beneath the surface in that song. I just found that this AOL First Listen thing is in conjunction with netscape. Basically four songs have been debuted over the past four days. yesterday was Train, and it's just been posted at Netscape. The day before yesterday was James Taylor, and that was on netscape yesterday. The changeover is clearly early morning US time. It's 10pm in Australia and the change just took place. So tomorrow night we should have a better quality versoin. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 22:19:18 +1000 From: Stephen Hallowes Subject: [EDA] I WAS WRONG - INTUITION IS UP AT NETSCAPE.COM NOW!!!! Guys!! It sounds amazing at a good quality level. There's all sorts of production details I didn't notice until now. Then these songs are planted onto the file sharing services. It's gotten to be quite common with an major release coming out. Then when someone downloads the song they get a slight taste of the music without getting the whole song ...which is good for the record company since they just made you listen to a 25-second commerical ten times and prevented the theft of the song. Personally, I'd rather they just do what AOL and others do and put a tag through it. Or better yet, save their energies and put it to something more productive because it isn't like it the real thing won't get otu there anyway. == Rob == ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 08:42:14 -0500 From: "Sam M" Subject: [EDA] Intuition Wow - I almost never post, but I just had to comment on the song. I think it is horrible. Jewel should know better than to try and follow trends - she's way too unique to do it well. Whoever said the song reminds them of the Paula Abdul era was totally right on; she sounds like Shakira doing a bad cover of "Cold Hearted Snake" about 10 years too late (mind you, I don't consider either of those two people worth a damn, so read no compliments into this analogy). I mean, the "...in the right direction..." part with the backup singers - GEEZE! I don't know if this will hit, but I sure hope to God it does; otherwise who knows what she'll do next? At the First Listen page AOL has a poll (well, two actually). The first question: What do you think about Jewel's new song? I took the poll at 8:09 AM 31 March and the results were: 54% I liked it. 31% I loved it! 15% I hated it. and then Which Jewel talent do you admire most? 47% Singing 25% Song writing 9% Her sassy fashion sense! 7% Guitar playing 6% Yodeling 4% Poetry writing 2% Acting - ----------------------- Well, at least her song writing beat her sassy fashion sense :-) Teeny-bobbers have not won yet. :-P Okay, what I think: Well, I am trying what Scott suggested, and listening to it a few times before making up my mind. The fact that i have to try to persuade myself to like it is not a positive though. As a dark parody of pop, I think it is somewhat successful. Of course, if it becomes a hit, it will be as a sucky pop song, and not for the "subtle cuts" at pop music. Which of course would be funny. In fact, I would love for it to hit the number one spot, get tons of TRL play, and then for Jewel to do an interview (even better if it was on TRL) and say outright that she meant it as a commentary of pop culture. Why? Well, first because it would comical, and second it would make me feel more sure she wasn't trying for a formula hit. But back to the song.... I do not care for it. Mainly the chorus drives me up the wall. How she has to pull the "heart" and "mind' out and up to fit with "intuition." To balance that somewhat, I did like the one instance near the end of the song where she plays with "heart" and "find"... sort of slides them up and down her register. (If I am using the right terms.) I think if the pop scene can accept "folk chick jewel" (despite Spirit and This Way) singing this class of pop/dance/whatever it is, then it will be a massive hit, and that I won't be able to listen to anything but public radio to keep from going crazy from listening to this on the radio over and over. But hey, that is just my opinion. I'm in shock also! It's a very "radical departure from her usual mellow musings", like Netscape said. I don't really know what to say about it. I REALLY like the first verse, it's definitly the best part of the song. The bridge is great also. The chorus is so weird!! I don't think it's THAT pop, like you're all saying. In fact, I don't think it's THAT radio-friendly also. Anyway, back to weirdness, this song is weird. Very dark, very ironic. The chorus is so freaking bizarre!!! I don't know why, but that just follow your heeeeeeeaaaaart is scary! But I really like the song. It's was definitly not what I was expecting but still good. I smell a "Dirrty" path here. It will shock people, the video will be everywhere, but the song won't go much further. Then, the 2nd single, if released properly, will be a smash. I just don't see this song being a hit, maybe a small. I think it's a great first single, much better than Standing Still was. This will grab people's attention, whether for good or bad, and we must expect some horrible reviews, and if the 2nd single is very different, like "Beautiful", and more reminiscent of her past, it shall be a hit. soooooo, Jewel fans, don't be sad or anything. The album is probably not like this song, just like Stripped is not like Dirrty at all. sorry for all the Christina comparisons... Fabio PS: I don't know if I made myself clear, but I really enjoy this song. And the lyrics are AMAZING. Help !!! Jewel is Freaking us all out.. This list cracks me up sometimes. In the span of being on here, I've watched the same cycle over and over. Jewel mentions making a new album... everyone hopes it will sound like Pieces of You... everyone starts freaking out that it won't...then everyone talks about how much they hate it (even though it hasn't come out yet)...then everyone starts wigging in different directions. I think this happens with fans of any artist. But being a songwriter/musician/insane lunatic, I can say that for the majority of songwriters out there, it is impossible NOT to change the way you write and what you write. For good songwriters, the songs are a natural extension of who you are and how you think. I mean, think about it - are you in to the exact same things and wearing the exact same clothes, and watching the exact same TV shows as you were 10 years ago ? Even 5 ? Now, I know a lot of the older people will probably say "Yeah" but as you get older, you don't change as quickly and start getting more into routines (this is speaking on a "for the most part" level - there are always exceptions). Remember, Jewel is 28 (about to be 29) and she's still on that "journey" to find herself. Just about any songwriter has to constantly adapt and change in order to survive in music. Look at any group that started many years ago that are still "relevant"...by that I mean, they still have the same, if not more, popularity and respect than they did when they started....in other words they are not considered "has beens." Aerosmith is a great example. Their first album came out around 1968....now to put that in perspective...that was only about 3-4 years after the BEATLES first album came out. Yet, they still have their newest videos played on MTV, they still sell a lot of seats at their shows and they still are considered to be a "cool" band on the whole. If you listen to their first album and listen to their latest album, it sounds like a totally different band. Given, Jewel has changed a bit more erratic than most, but maybe that's a Gemini thing...heh. My birthday is just 2 days after Jewel's and my songwriting has been like that. Any of the EDA's that have my stuff from our first CD and have listen to our 2nd CD can tell you that. All I'm saying is, Jewel isn't the same person or songwriter that she was during POY. She's human like the rest of us and whatever she's doing at the time and into is going to be reflected in the songwriting. Hell, she was going out with a rodeo star, the last album sounded a little country. Now she's doing a dance thing. Maybe if she'll ever go out with me, you'll get to see the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock side of Jewel (I'm not holding my breath on that one and I don't think anyone else is either). So far, just about every album that she's done has seemed pretty good for me but I'll admit it takes a week or two to get used to it. I'm willing to bet that after a few months of it being out, most of you will like it to. Now, I also know this list loves to freak out anytime anyone expresses their opinion (that's why I've stayed out of most of these discussions lately - it just ain't worth the stress) and they seem to want to go off on people because they don't agree with what they are saying. If that's the case and you don't agree with me - that's ok with me, but don't email me personally and try to "express your views" or "change my opinion"....I did this in the context of the list and you can do the same. I get a few 100s emails a day with my job and the band so I don't have time to do any back and forth with someone on a subject that ultimately isn't going to go anywhere. If you want to discuss it on the list - have at it....if you email me, then hold your breath until I write back (to see what pretty colors you start turning). Okay, now that I've given you all eye strain, I'll shut up now. Lew www.coilback.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #120 ***************************
