I think we all know he wasn't trying to "disrespect" Jewel by commenting on her Oscar outfit... he was simply saying he liked it and she looked beautiful. As for the actual dress... personally I thought it was a bit ugly... the colour was too much and it was just ... weird looking. But as for Jewel wearing "revealing" clothing... get over it. She's done it plenty of times before. She established a long time ago that she's not some child of the forest - she does like to show off her "assetts" once in a while. No big deal. I hope one day she goes to the actual oscars (as a nominee of course), and wears a nicer looking dress. Speaking of the Oscars - did anyone else find Adrien Brody's speech particularly moving? I just thought he seemed really sincere and not at all caught up in the hype and industry of the oscars. Also, I thought his comments were a lot more appropriate than say, Michael Moore's comments... although I do really like Michael Moore, and I'm really glad his film won. I think the term is thrown around too much. As long Jewel is still making the music she wants to make, and not what someone else is forcing down her throat to make a buck, she isn't selling out. In fact, just the opposite. She is being true to herself. I also think it's really funny that so many people are being critical of this album when it hasn't even come out yet!! I'm actually pretty excited about it, even though I sort of prefer Jewel's acoustic/rocky background (i.e. Carnivore, LMJLMA, SIBTW, Race Car Driver, etc...). New is good. I'm sick of hearing the same type of Jewel song on the radio. I would love to even hear "Serve the Ego" because it doesn't sound like the rest of her sappy love ballads. I realize that she plays other styles of music, but that's not what makes it on the air... So, quit your bitchin' at least until the album comes out. Please!! This is some kind of a list that monitors "industry buzz" around a track... basically, it's a very good sign. I went to the Canadian Music Network's website, and they described the "Power Pick" list by saying that every song they pick HAS to be a hit. They're very accurate. They measure based on the quality of the song, the amount of emphasis/backing the record company is giving the song, and feedback they get directly from radio stations. I know from living in Canada, that Canadian music trends generally mirror American music trends... and stand as a basic representation of "North American" music trends. So I would assume a similar kind of "buzz" is going on at US radio. As I said, this may or may not be of interest to any of you... but it is an early good sign as to the reaction of the industry to the new single. Jewel Catches The Dance Bug On New Album Apparently Jewel fans are in for a shock. It seems that the platinum-selling singer will be taking full advantage of the success she recently came upon last year with the remix of her song "Serve The Ego." After the track hit the #1 spot on Billboards Hot Dance Music Club Play chart, the singer was inspired to take her music into new territories. Now her upcoming new album, which is due out June 3, will showcase her pursuit of this more modern sound, branching off from her typical AOR folksiness to also include dance and hip hop beats. Now theres just no telling what this yodeling Alaskan will accomplish if supplied with just the right break. She enlisted Cuban American producer Lester Mendez to help attain her new musical vision. This is the same man who has also helped boost the careers of artists like Shakira, Santana and Enrique Iglesias. Although electronics were used in the production of the album, aiding the artist to make the kind of musical textures she envisioned, a live backing band was also brought in to make sure that Jewel retained some of the sound she has made her name with. Jewel came onto the scene with her 1995 album Pieces Of You. Her debut record eventually overcame its almost nonexistent early reception, and sold over 10 million copies worldwide on the strength of such radio friendly singles as "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant For Me." Since then Jewel has recorded three other albums, including 1998s Spirit and 2002s This Way, as well as a collection of festive holiday recordings. Also included on the performers resume was a role in the Ang Lee directed civil war epic Ride With The Devil and a best selling collection of poetry, which she decided to give the cheesy title A Night With Armor. The first single from the currently untitled CD will be "Intuition" and will be released nationwide next week. It was simply my opinion of her choice of attire expressed with words that came to my mind when I viewed it. As well, there is nothing wrong with finding Jewel sexy or beautiful. I agree that she is at times both of these things. And you know that I think so simply by that sentence. I don't feel there is a need for someone to send multiple posts to the list expressing that same idea over and over again. That's when to me it gets to the point of being excessive and treading on the "piece of meat" ground. Putting out the same type of product over and over and over again until they have become eclipsed by some other to replace them??? Artists are creative people and when the same thing becomes generated over and over it becomes either stale or impossible to repeat..Read or watch an interview by any artist who has had phenomenal success out of the gate and they say the same thing. An artist should grow and experiment that is how the great ones become great. It is how legends are born. Putting out quality work over a career. Sometimes its varied in genre or with the people assisting them to put it out. Experimenting helps to make them "better at their craft" (to paraphrase our own Angel Jewel). I know it may be difficult for some of you who were born after 1985 to understand this, but there is really nothing wrong with it. Wait until the record comes out before passing judgement--you just might be pleasantly surprised. Just my two cents, Mary Lynn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 15:50:47 -0700 From: "Stacey Hamilton" Subject: [EDA] jeweljk Is the official website down? I know it may be difficult for >some of you who were born after 1985 to understand this, but there is >really nothing wrong with it. I was born in 1987, making me only 15, 16 next week. (I've loved Jewel since before I was 10, back during the PoY days... thats pretty weird), but I know experimenting helps the artist improve and bring their craft to a whole new level. I'm completely open and ready for the new album, and I hope its as good as its being hyped up to be. Also, I noticed someone saying that a lot of us love Jewel no matter what, and are completely biased. I for one, do not think that I myself am like this. I always get the urge to skip over "Near You Always", fan favorite it that it is, unless I'm in a really fluffy mood. Thats just the first thing that comes to mind. (Not that there are very many though!!) With the exception of a few maybe, I doubt the list is brainwashed to the point where we love and devote ourselves to every breath Jewel takes. And one last comment: like a lot of others here are repeating, its sad to see everyone arguing over little things. Before bashing, or even having an opinion on the album besides being excited about it, lets wait for it to be released. The karma on the list lately has been really down, and me and probably the entire list would like to see some increased positivity. So lets think before we be rash and say unnecesary things, and try to remember why we call ourselves "EDAs." Thanks! This message is directed at people like Michiel whose recent posts have made me ashamed to be part of this list. Read this stuff: 1. "That oscar award show really was a perfect moment to show the people how beautiful and busty jewel is and istill think she could now pose for a more man magazine like maxim! if she dares to dress like this at the oscars showing so much cleavage then she certainly would have to accept the offer." It's so important that 'the people' know exactly how 'busty' Jewel is, isn't it? I mean, how could a female musician possibly have a career without stripping and posing half naked? How ludicrous! Wouldn't we all like to see Jewel on the cover of Maxim? Hell, why not Playboy?? After all, with all this talk of Jewel selling out, isn't it just the next logical step? I'm sure it'd help with the album sales. What woman wouldn't want to live with the thought of a bunch of horny men groping at and getting off on her nude photos. Every girl's dream. "She certainly would have to accept that offer." Yes, Michiel. Certainly. 2. "If she changes image, then i would recommend jewel go pose for a magazine like more female artists have done!! it is to please the male fans hehe!" Your recommendation?? Ahh.. Just "like more female artists have done"?? Who cares about personal integrity! Dignity? Mayhh. An incredible voice?? Intelligent, honest lyrics??? Who cares! Let's just watch her strip instead! We want Jewel to be just like all those other female artists, don't we? Those career artists.. like.. Britney, maybe? Or Christina Aguilara? Opps! I mean X-Tina. Or - Mariah Carey?? I can't wait! 3. "attending an award show in such revealing dress that makes a lot of impact on me" ahhh.. yes..an impact.... on your pants.... wonderful. That's exactly what I want to read about! Thanks, Michiel! A woman wears a low-cut dress and she becomes nothing more than a piece of meat! Think whatever you want, but I don't need to read five messages from you in one issue of the jewel digest talking about how much you enjoy looking at her cleavage. Show a little respect for a woman who has tried to build a career on writing quality music with insightful lyrics. Show a little respect for all of the women on this list.
