Her name is Niki Barr, and her website is nikibarr.com. She's a little rockier than most Jewel songs, but she's really good. Really energetic live, also. So check her out!! "Today" is one of the songs on her album that I like the most. Christy the Tattoed angel ===== "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." Yahoo! Keep in mind, I understand a lot of what you're saying - and in *some* sense, I agree with you. I mean, I'm personally remaining very open-minded about the album, which is getting me very excited... but I can definitely see where you're coming from. This post is half my own personal beliefs, and half me playing devils advocate. Keep that in mind. I'm gonna divide this into parts... 1. The idea that Jewel is going more pop for commercial reasons: Just year and a half ago, Jewel released This Way saying she didn't want to conform to a formula for commercial success, and just wanted to release the music she liked. Why do you all assume that's changed? Just because she's veering away from the music *you* may like, doesn't mean she's selling out under the advice of her record company. To me, from the messages we've gotten from her, she sounds really excited and creatively juiced by this album. Her original explanation of why she's making the record, in my opinion, has a very solid artistic basis. I don't understand why you can't give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she's doing this for creative reasons, not commercial ones. As for Lester Mendez.... I know that pop producers are often the most talented and best at their craft. Pop songs require the most amount of expertise as far as production goes - particularly making a lot of those artists sound good. Imagine a guy with this much skill teaming up with someone who actually *has* talent. That's an amazing thing. Plus Jewel herself said she hasn't written songs this well with anyone since Steve Poltz - that should be enough for most of you to give the guy a chance. We were all a little worried when Dann Huff was announced as the producer on This Way - and yet that album wasn't country sounding at all. Jewel's musical influence is undoubtedly going to be more important than Lester Mendez's influence... it's his *skills* she's after, not his sound. 2. The idea that the lyrics are going to be meaningless: Jewel has said about 800 times that she's focussing as much on writing intelligent lyrics as she is on experimenting with the music. The lyrics to the new single seem to be all about following your heart and your intuition... a topic that isn't so different from a lot of what Jewel has written about before. Also, they seem interesting, creative and well-crafted. I'm personally looking forward to another 12-13 *new* songs with *new*, never before heard lyrics. 3. The idea that changing her music/image is a BAD thing. *How* is experimenting with her style a bad thing? You guys make it sound like she pulled off this masterplan by "drawing" everyone in with her acoustic-folksy music and then cleverly changing styles... bwahahaha. Experimenting is a GREAT thing and an absolute MUST for any artist that wants to grow. Think about it... Jewel has been writing in the same way since she was 16 - with her acoustic guitar. She needs to start branching out or she's just gonna become redundant. It's a natural course for her. Someone on this list said about this, "I now know how Bob Dylan fans must have felt when he went electric". But imagine if he hadn't gone electric? All the fantastic music we would've MISSED OUT on! Think about that. I'm not saying all of you are going to like the new album.... nor do you have to. But put that down to your own tastes, and not Jewel "selling out". Because the fact is, that's what this is about - your tastes. Jewel is just doing her thing. If you don't like it, don't accuse her of selling out to some commercial bar you think has been set by her record company. Just say "ok... this doesn't appeal to my taste, maybe the next album will" and go and make some hot chocolate. In conclusion, I have two things to say - first of all: This new album WILL help her as a musician, whether you like the music or not. What I mean is - experimenting, even if the result isn't appealing, is always a good thing... her music and her will be better for it. Also, if you do hate this next album, bask in the knowledge that the album after this is going to be solo acoustic. Steve. PS - I do think it's a good idea to reserve judgement until you've heard the music. I mean none of us have even heard the first single and we're accusing Jewel of "selling out"... it's jumping the gun a bit, don't you think? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 11:23:03 +0100 From: "Michiel" Subject: [EDA] =?iso-8859-1?Q?jewel=B4s_new_record_will_be_gr8!!?= hello jewelfans, The new record will be a great new creative gift from Jewel to her fans. Whatever people say this record is what Jewel wants to let us listen to right now in her life. She is working a thousand times very hard on making this record different than the other ones. She tells us that she wants to let us feel a different sound which will give us a lot of new thoughts and ideas about her. The lyrics of those 13/14 new songs will be great, as the instruments that will be used will be amazing. A new Jewel cd never dissapointed me at all, her first record was very pretty because as jewel points out that she could let us hear what she could do with a guitar and with her words. The second record Spirit was quite nice as well, with collobarotor Leonard. The songs were very cool, and forever People will remind Jewel4s song Hands. The christmas record was just an experiment for Jewel to sing, and she pulled that off. The record This Way was also very good in terms of lyrics and sounds and instruments, based on some new songs like i won4t walk away, standing still and till we run out of road. I am sure as soon as this record releases and the first song spins on radio that a lof of fans will say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH what is this a great song and a marvellous tune!!! That Jewel changes a little the songs and the instruments and the producer, is just cool. She is not afraid to experiment, and i am sure this new record will give jewel new opportunities in her career. I will forever support Jewel in her music, and i am sure that the new record will please me a lot!!!!!!! bye Michiel the dutch jewelfan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 07:01:33 EST From: Mrazfan@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] april 7th/8th yea, Mraz is 18 for the second week in a row. and STILL above Mayer!!!! but anyway, I think they're both going to do great.. Jack Johnson and Jewel are both extremely talented and deserve to continue the success they've had in the past... The Androids song is so funny that it deserves to be a hit... And as much as I want Mraz to remain the 'hidden secret' he's been so far, it'd be great for him to have a hit, too. Just not looking forward to the screaming girls at his shows, Mayer style :). His new video is pretty funny, too. He drives a Mrazda, heehee :P. OK, so in 3 weeks I want the Billboard charts to be: 1. Mraz 2. Jewel 3. Johnson 4. Androids Perfect... Cheers, Tom. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 09:20:07 EST From: Odin818@cs.com Subject: Re: [EDA] april 7th/8th i just think that sum 41 new video rocks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 01:30:33 +1100 From: Barry Howarth Subject: [EDA] Jewel's "roots" Hi Angels, It has been said that Jewel should get back to her roots. Just what are her " roots"? The music she grew up with, that her parents played - -- that would be part of it. She has said that she admired music such as the Cole Porter Song Book as done by Ella Fitzgerald, that she loved big band music and jazz and especially the blues. Then, of course, she was in a rap group too. And she studied opera at Interlochen. The early music that brought her to public attention was strictly limited to what she could play on the guitar (folk, country but not jazz). She has said that she felt very restricted artistically by this. So I wouldn't think of that early Innerchange-style of music as her "roots" (no matter how much I love it and adore her performing solo acoustic -- and I didn't like the "Serve the Ego" single as there was too little Jewel and too much just noise). Ironically, it sounds to me as if this new album will in a sense be more of a return to her "roots" -- she has said she had the big band jazz music of the 1940s in mind (wartime music) when she was planning this album and that there will be a jazz element to it.I think it is great that she is still experimenting, finding new ways to express her feelings and explore the feelings of others through her songs. That's her nature and it hasn't changed from the early days. And I'm sure her social/political views will be there as well, as usual. Peace, Barry Howarth "'Cause anyone can start a conflict It's harder yet to disregard it I'd rather see the world from another angle We are everyday angels ..."
