It clarified some things for us and also gave us some great new ideas. We'll use some of those ideas on the site and I think we'll also create a pay area where you can get a lot more content and we can cover the extra manpower costs. Most of you also asked for more songs and performances and longer clips of songs, or even pay to download songs. Right now we are prevented from going further with this than we do because our label is still involved in the no-downloading wars. So we are stuck. But we hear you. And we agree. A lot of you asked for photos of Jewel when she was younger. You may not be aware that her second book, 'Chasing Down The Dawn,' is not only full of Jewel stories, but has tons of photos from that younger period. Jewel is a little beside herself right now. Now that she is almost done things are getting tight. They've fallen a tad behind 'cause there have been so many interruptions in the studio. A lot of press, and movie people, and radio people and stuff all come over to hear the new music. Which is fun and responses have been really terrific. But. She's not getting much done! I just had a panicky call from her saying she's going to have to close the studio to any more people or she'll never get her vocals done. This is the week of final vocals and needless to say stress isn't too good for that. Thanks for the great feedback. Wish you all were here! Please forgive the unformatted nature of this JeweLink, as I'm trying to get this out to you in a timely manner, while doing several other projects simultaneously today. Here we go... Our new weekly photos are now up at the scrapbook page. Enjoy the new images from Jewel's stop at The Tower Theater in Philadelphia (Upper Darby, actually) on June 26, 2002. You can also now take a look at the cover art for both the new "Intuition" radio single and the forthcoming "Revealing Jewel" book by clicking on the new thumbnail images located on their respective listings on the calendar page. The forthcoming new Jewel single, Intuition, is set to ship to radio stations nationwide next week. The song was written and produced by Jewel and Cuban-American producer Lester Mendez, who collaborated with her throughout the new album. Musicians joining Jewel on the song are Rusty Anderson (electric guitars), Mark Oakley (acoustic guitars), Paul Bushnell (bass), Michael Bolger (accordion), and Mendez on keyboards. In a new press release going out today, Jewel comments on the new album: This record is really a natural extension for me. I began writing songs when I was 16, and I heard all kinds of stuff in my head. But I didn't have the skill to do it on guitar, so my first record was what I was able to get out of my head through my hands. Over the years, I've learned more about the craft more about how to write, more about playing, more about music, and more about lyrics. So I'm finally able to further embellish the ideas I started with a long time ago. I've always been really interested in all kinds of music, I loved hip-hop and rap when I was first exposed to it in the 80s. I loved the beats, and I loved the artists who had the ability to be very lyrical with those beats. I also like the hypnotic nature of dance music; there is something very primordial about it. And, of course, I love folk music I love story-telling and socially driven music. The tone of some of the new songs also leans towards jazz. So you are going to hear my love of all these types of music on the new album, and I tried to combine them in a way that makes sense. You have folk melodies against hip-hop beats against a French accordion against hand-clapping and whistling solos. But it still really sounds like me. A video for the new single, "Intuition," is also in the works, with production planned to begin next week. Thats about it for today. Back to you soon. I'm really excited about everyone coming up... From the "Empire strikes back!" thing about Atlantic with Jewel's new single, to the extreme curiousity of there being an accordian in this album, and with the band. Hehe. I'm just really curious about it all. I think Jewel will be faring well on the charts this time around, even though it doesn't really matter to me. I like her with all hardcore fans the best, not a bunch of people around for a single, but this may get her more hardcore fans so yeah. I'm just really excited!! Can't wait! Everyday I get more excited and curious, with all the new things I hear. Way to go, Jewel! And for all of you who were criticizing and calling the new picture "fake".... haha you were all wrong! hehe. I didn't not like it, but didn't love it, but Fabio is right, it really grows on you. Its just a new look you need to adjust to a bit. And whoever said her hands were too big... I didn't think they were big at all, I didn't even think her fingers were that long... And remember, "My hands are small I know"... That probably wasn't literal, but still! That picture is growing on me now lol. Im just excited! And on the modeling thing; Jewel looked like she felt a little awkward in that teeny skirt. She looked and I think felt best in the other non-teenyweeny outfit thats on wireimage. I'm really excited! I'm listening to Jewelstock right now, and its really something to compare this music to the music about to come, but she did say she finally knows how to put out whats been in her head for so long. And I'm really excited that there may be an acoustic album later on too. When you strip away everything from Jewel (in the non-literal sense) youre left with her and her guitar. Thats the essential Jewel. But I can't wait to hear Intuition! Ok, a really jarbled e-mail on the new things of today, Peace, Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 02:25:53 -0000 From: "Tom H" Subject: [EDA] NJC: God wears a hat and sings Beautiful Don't bother reading this if you don't like a certain girly-voiced, extremely gifted and talented artist. Likewise if you don't like long-winded reviews and pointless blabbering... There once was a young man called Tom who travelled all the way from Cambridge to London because he had heard about a man who could sing, and sing good. Tom broke his piggy bank and broke out his last few pennies for this journey, making him unable to have a haircut. But Tom didn't care - apparently this artist would be worth the journey. Arriving in London a couple of hours before the show, Tom met up with his two new-found friends - whom he had met at the singing man's free show last night - - Sandream and Susi. They had travelled far and wide, from France and Germany in fact, to marvel at this talented behatted fellow. Walking into the bar, Tom couldn't help but think that if the basement was as small as the bar, this was going to be a very small venue. Tom was happy because he's not a big fan of stadiums anyway. Five minutes later, who should walk in but the artist they had travelled all this distance to see. And - what's this? - the artist is walking over. After the night before it appears that the three travellers had become fast friends with the artist, whom Tom gladly bought a beer and invited to sit with them. Sandream had taken a still image using her photography equipment at last night's strange venue, of our friend the artist placing his hand in the groin area of a certain stocky percussionist we have also grown to love. A very compromising picture, but a funny one nonetheless, and both the artist and the percussionist marvelled over the fact that it *really* looks like there's some ball-fondling happening there. After a lovely chat over a lovely beer, our artist had to go downstairs to the stage which he told us was the size of a table for a soundcheck. After an hour or so of waiting, the three travellers were able to make their way into the dungeon, where Sandream and Tom staked out a position at the front of the tiny stage, and Susi snuck her way behind the soundboard where she was able to record this marvellous show onto a modern version of vinyl. The support act came and went - a jolly good chap who sang some pretty tunes and kept us going while we waited for your friend and mine Jason Mraz to take the stage. Did you get that I was talking about Jason Mraz? Yeah? OK, cool... so now I'll talk normally. Another great show, but this time I got to see 2 whole hours rather than 4 songs :). And this time we were literally a foot away from the band - Jason's guitar almost hit my forehead on a number of occasions. I got to hear songs that I never thought I would hear played live - Dream Life Of Rand McNally, Zero Percent and On Love, In Sadness among the highlights. There was a really enthusiastic crowd, who knew all the words to every song, no matter how obscure you'd think it would be. After the first song Jason basically played requests from then on, which was great. He kept going on about how it was the smallest venue he's ever played in (apart from a disabled toilet) and about how hot and sweaty it was. Here's the setlist - there's one title there that you might be unfamiliar with, see if you can guess which one it is :). Tonight, Not Again So Unusual Right Kind Of Phrase Beautiful Rocketman On Love, In Sadness Curbside Prophet Unfold Dream Life Of Rand McNally Older Lover Undercover Better I'll Do Anything Conversation With Myself You And I Both Sleep All Day Zero Percent Yeah, that's right... Jason played Beautiful... By the one and only XXXtina Aguilera. Excellent crowd singalong, and altogether a very funny song to play! Apparently they are sick of hearing that song on British radio every 3 minutes so they decided they'd do it for themselves. I much prefer the Mraz version. So, there you have it, another great show and now we're left to count down the days til June when your friend and mine Jason Mraz returns to European soil. Goodnight, Tom ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #93 **************************
