Do you know that there are SO FEW artists who would even waste their time with our little list? Do you think Britney or Avril or whoever right now is out there reads their little lists and sends a PERSONAL note back to their little list with updates and well-wishes and holiday greetings and such? No...9 times out of 10 if not more often NO. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2003 14:45:26 -0500 From: BeetleBugAngelVW@aol.com Subject: [EDA] I'm gonna post this again...sorry... It didn't post through correctly...let's try again.... In a message dated 3/3/2003 2:21:20 PM Eastern Standard Time,michiel_van_gorkum@planet.nl writes:> I am not being redudant here, i am just expressing a lack of ambition that> the jewel team has, and also the lack of ambition that ron shapiro with> atlantic records show towards their most prestigious stone > and gem Jewel. But you are being redundant; we get this post from you at least once weekly...and furthermore, as much as we all love Jewel, we are in the MINORITY...why would a record company spend money on an artist that in record sales and radio airtime so small in comparision w/other artists they have? Let's face it, not since WWSYS, YWMFM, and FG has Jewel really been "popular," not to the extent she was then...She's taken a different approach, and the music scene has taken an altogether new direction since then. That was, what, 7 years ago or something? Wow...you don't catch people singing Jewel's songs under their breath anymore like you did back then. I remember being at summer camp that summer that WWSYS came out, and for the talent show that session I'd say at least 75% of the girls sang or played Jewel songs from POY. You ask people who Jewel is now, they don't know until you go all the way back to that album...some will recognize SS, but really that got no airtime compared !to the singles off of POY. Yes, we'd all like to see a live DVD...yes, we all love Jewel...but the difference between you and us is that most of us have ahold on reality, and realize that Jewel will never be as promoted or marketed as Britney, Avril, Norah, etc, unless this album is poppy-mainstream crap, which it probably isn't. So suck it up and move on or find a more popular artist to be a fan to. You seem a wee bit obsessed, and it's unhealthy. Instead of spending your days daydreaming about a live DVD, go do something...anything...sorry to sound harsh, but I think it's needed at this point. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 16:51:34 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: [EDA] Artsy and Shit - meaning?? What is the meaning of Artsy and Shit?? I was just wondering around and found some sentences using this expression (yeah, I think it is an expression). >> My one recomendation would be to simplefy the first two songs and stop trying to be all artsy and shit. >> I think I'm gonna do some kind of photo thing with the top in the header and the rest of it in the footer...you know, all artsy and shit. >> i cut my hair. yeah. black and white. all artsy and shit. >> some weird psychological dramatic reading, very artsy and shit. hmm... does it mean something like "artsy and stuff"?? Or something that's pure crap but is considered art??? I'm kinda liking this title now. I agree with you that I would love to see some DVD's of Jewel. But I'm not going to post "me too" because Jewel and her management don't really care. If they wanted to know how many people wanted live DVD's they would do a poll on her site or something. Just my two cents. Sandy, While for the most part I agree with you I just have to point out something the defies that "rule". Johnny Cash, well known country artist, has done a cover of "Hurt" by the wonderful Nine Inch Nails. Might I say that while not a bad cover it hurts my ears because it's so freakin slow! Anyway, I digress. This song is being played on the 'alternative' radio stations here even though Johnny Cash is a country artist. If they wanted to > >know how many people wanted live DVD's they would do a poll on her >site >or something. I really wouldn't say they don't care. We all know that Jewel and her management care about our opinions. Who knows, maybe a DVD is in the works. Prove that its not. Maybe if they notice a rising demand for it they'll decide. Also, someone else said Jewel isn't selling that well anymore. Its true theres not as much hype and major talk about her, but I think selling a million records for This Way is pretty damn good, although not as good as her other albums, but yeah. If you look back, how many artists actually kept going selling millions upon millions upon millions of albums for every release they made? Lets take Bruce Springsteen for example, he sold single platinum records, then hit with Born in the USA with 15x Platinum and Live 75-85 with 13x platinum, then back down to platinum, platinum, 4x platinum, gold, platinum, etc. We can't expect to have consistant super-sales with any artist. Jewel is still faring very well, and she may come out with a major hit album again, because I think we can all agree that she is here to stay. Even the beatles went from 15x and 16x platinum to gold and gold and back up to platinum again. Don't expect consistant mega-sales, no artist does that. Personally, I CAN'T WAIT for Jewel's upcoming albums. I think the new one is going to be good. I don't think its going to be uber-dance like a lot of you are implying. I think its going to be a really hip, upbeat album, with some funky sounds, but even Jewel said it still has guitar and a lot of organic things; I doubt its gonna be some Kylie Minogue like thing. As for the acoustic album that we're all hoping for, that will really be something special too. I can see her coming out with a lot of all new songs again, and I can see it selling huge. That album is going to be very special, probably the standout gem of all of her albums so far, kind of like a more mature POY. I'm really excited. As for a DVD as well, that will probably come out when Jewel's record sales are really high, so the most will be made of it. No need to get impatient for one though, I agree with the others who said theres a LOT in the works already. So yeah, bascially, Jewel's management DOES care, as does Jewel, and don't expect mega-sales for every album because no one accomplishes that, Jewels album is going to be really good, and not necesarilly uber-dance-pop, and theres a possibility of a DVD in the future, just be patient and enjoy all the cool stuff on the way right now. In closing: I REALLY THINK YOU GUYS ARE TAKING THE "ARTSY AND SHIT" THING WAYYYY TOO SERIOUSLY, DESPITE OTHERS MENTIONING THIS YOU ALL PRETEND NOT TO HEAR IT!!! Oh yeah, I really doubt that saying "shitty" in Til We Run Out Of Road prevented it from being played. Seriously now, guys. It wasn't released as a single, and shit is played A LOT on the radio, I hear it all the time on many stations. Standing Still, Break Me, and This Way were hardly played (Well actually I heard SS a nice few times!), so why would you expect non-singles to get a load of airplay? And saying "crappy food" instead of "shitty food" would've sucked. That would be Jewel changing herself. Being able to swear is good for credibility! hehe. I love TWROOR. Ok, my hands are dead guys, thanks a lot if you read all of this!! Which is true, but I wanted to add that: Jewel, despite the fact that she isn't as popular mainstream as she was 7 years ago, is nonetheless an established star, and has the potential to be a chart topper once again; and like many people on this list have expressed, if Atlantic would put some more of its power behind her, she just might see the top 10 again. So for once, I almost agree with Michiel that it'd be nice to see a little bit 'o publicity for our girl. The thing I want to disagree with Michiel on is the Jewel-team having any hardcore discussions with this list. As the numbers of active participants, or even monitors, on this list have diminished, the percentage of hard-core fans has increased... That means that we're going to by anything and everything Jewel no matter what, so talking to us about what we want is really irrelevant. Jewel's Team, the Atlantic staff included, really do need to focus on marketing her new material to the mainstream, not rehashing past recordings or performances for reminiscing.
