She needs to be careful that she doesn't do a Cher on us. In all honesty her 'dance' records were abominable - its fine if they write good songs, but the only reason why the dance element has been added is to try and ressurrect a flagging career. I certainly hope this isn't true of Jewel. The only popular female artists I know who have done well in experimenting with electronic music are Madonna and Kylie - if you want a good example of how an artist suspected of a dying career has revamped themselves successfully then check out 'Ray of Light' and 'Music' by Madge or 'Light Years' and 'Fever' by Kylie. All four albums did brilliantly in the UK - perhaps because pop music has been so bad since the late 90s and they presented something new and refreshing, a new angle on pop music. I personally like their music to the extent that its fun and interesting to listen and/or dance to. However, when I seek something a little more simplistic yet beautiful, introspective yet enlightening, I turn to Jewel for her accoustic work. I really hope she knows what she's doing it'll be a sad departure if she cannot live up to the high standard she has set herself. I will definately buy the album and then it will probably grow on me, but yeah. It's a little scary. I'm imagining something like "Under the Water." Something like that - hehe, her "rap" part is funny. It's like Blondie rapping. Or, something like "God's Gift to Women" - that song was like an 80s retro weird pop song. I think it's a funny song, but I hope the album won't consist of 13 songs that sound like a mix of those two songs. =| But, on the other hand, I'm excited to see what this will be like. This will be her last album in her contract, so we'll see what will happen afterward. That's what I really want to see. Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 09:29:26 EST From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Message from Jewel I think that we should be applauding Jewel for sticking to her convictions and doing something that she wants to do even if it's not the same as what people are used to hearing from her. After all - which of her previous albums sound like each other? None of them. She's still young and has a lot of room to grow as an artist. Look at any top 40 chart from the mid-nineties and see how many of those artists are still relevant today. Of the ones who are - you'll probably find some that didn't allow themselves to be pigeon-holed either. Jewel has never caved to industry pressures because a certain type of music was or was not popular. She's always done her own thing and that's what appealed to many of us in the first place. If she's bringing in collaborators she's not bringing in anyone to allow them to corrupt her and her craft. If they do, it won't make it onto the album. Let's trust that she knows what she's doing because she always has before. But that's just my opinion, I may be wrong. Why do you think she agreed to re-make "You Were Meant For Me" and "Foolish Games" and released those new versions rather than the Pieces Of You CD versions? The re-makes were more radio-friendly and they put her more firmly on the map than Who Will Save Your Soul did. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that she "caved" and re-recorded those two songs (a VERY controversial topic on this list back then), as she OWNED 1997 on the charts because of those two songs, and YWMFM was the #1 song of the year on a few prominent year-end countdowns. I'm hard-pressed to think of more than a handful of artists that haven't released at least one or two albums that I dislike or find.. well.. bothersome *g* > She needs to be careful that she doesn't do a Cher on us. Jewel's 15-minutes on MTV might have passed, but she's got a good, solid fan base. > I personally like their music to the extent that its fun and > interesting to listen and/or dance to. That's >what I really want to see. well, this is not her last album of her contract, the next one is. the possible solo acoustic album!! woohoo!! as for this album, i am very excited! maybe im the only one, but that is ok. jewel and her music have been evolving with me over the past almost 7 years. when i start getting into music with more beat so does she. i love it! i am sooooooo excited about this album. it kind of makes me think of alanis in a way, cus she has really neat beats in her songs, yet the lyrics are always awesome! i totally think jewel is gonna pull through on this one. and if you all have nothing to be excited about, you can be excited about one thing... these are ALL NEW SONGS!!! we have no idea what to expect. i find it really really exciting. as for musicians on the new album, i totally think flea is gonna be on it. they have been friends for a long time and they have worked together several times, its about time he gets on one of the albums. oh and i love him hehe. go flea! i also think that mr. poltz should be on there, cus it would be awesome. as for others i have no idea. but i think she mentioned it and is keeping us in suspense for a good reason. go jewel! alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tired of spam? So I am sure the new album will not blow me away, but as always she will be amazing in concert no matter what kind of music she makes!! Some fans turn away from artists when they change their sound or style- like when bob dylan decided to go electric!! i am sure everyone would love jewel to make another "pieces of you" style record- as that what her best effort yet, but we have to realize that she is probably bored with that sound & needs to experiment to stay fresh & enthused! - -Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 20:22:45 EST From: JeWeLNuMbEr1FaN@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] EDA Shirts and stuff wow that is a ton of stuff! im gonna have to buy a lot of it...But I was thinking...If I were to wear EDA/Jewel thongs...someone would think I like Jewel a *bit* too much lol..They'd be like uh...They make jewel thongs? lol...But there is ALOT i want!
