And it was people like Woody Guthrie who assisted this change by creating such great songs modelled on what I would call folk songs (being old-fashioned and pedantic, I'll stick to the original meaning). But I must admit that Jeff is right, the process of creation is the same as with traditional songs except that now we know who modified the song handed down from a previous generation, as with his example of "Masters of War" being based on an old English ballad. But I would be reluctant to call all songs "that speak for the masses or the times" folk songs. It's too broad and would lead the term in the same direction as "pop music", coming from "popular music". After all, "popular" originally meant the same as "folk" -- of the people (Latin "populus"); then it extended to what the people like, what a lot of people like, and now, in relation to music, I don't really know what it means precisely (except, perhaps, music whose purpose is commercial success). When I was growing up "popular music" meant something like Cole Porter's "Too Darn Hot" (which Jewel has sung many times), but I wouldn't call it "pop music". The meaning of the word has changed. The meaning of "folk music" is similarly changing. Nevertheless, a song like Woody Guthrie's classic "This Land Is Your Land" -- which "speaks for the masses" , certainly -- is to my mind not a "folk song". But then again I wouldn't have called "House of the Rising Sun" a folk song either, when by my own definition it is. Take care, Barry Howarth "'Cause anyone can start a conflict It's harder yet to disregard it I'd rather see the world from another angle We are everyday angels ..." I think it's important and you all might like to read it. It's regarding my question about the status of the SCC Humanitarium project they were doing to try to help prevent the stoning of a Nigerian woman who had a child out of wedlock. I'm surprised it hadn't come up. To me, this seems like it should be a huge deal... it just goes to show you how every little bit helps, and everyone can help make a difference in the world. It does look more & more like it may get pushed back again, but there's still been no date mentioned other than Feb. 25. Time will tell. As for finding news on Steve that's not tied to Jewel...check out poltz.com.
