However, folk music can be created by an individual, IMO. Guthrie is a prime example. He was a VERY prolific songwriter, and I would venture to say that his originals were folk songs as well. And I use the term "original" loosely. In early-mid 20th century american music, much of the content was culled from true folk songs of the past. Also, I would lump "songs that speak for the masses or the times" as folk music. I would definitely put "Masters of War" in that category. It was a footprint of a time and sentiment gone by.
