AND Sheryl Crow got four nominations, including Best ROCK album... which is a complete joke. Also, Avril Lavigne got nominated for best female rock vocal for skater boy.... holy shit. To me, this is a coincidence, because I just realized last week that Babyface had written some of my favorite "guilty pleasure" songs, like "Take a Bow" from Madonna and "Strut" by Sheena Easton. Probably lots more, too, that I haven't realized yet. Interesting, because I've never really cared for his own music. Very interesting, I have NO idea how it's gonna sound, so it's great!! I did a little research and discovered that this guy is a songwriter also. He doesn't produce much albums, what he does the most is programming, arranging and remixing. Lately he worked with Shakira and Enrique Iglesias, but don't be frightened, hehe! He has also worked with Jimmy Page, David Byrne, Ricky Martin, Spice Girls, Chris de Burgh, Johnny Mathis, Will Smith, Collective Soul, Jennifer Lopez, Grace Jones, PM Dawn, Bee Gees, Pet Shop Boys, and Angelique Kidjo (the biggest selling African pop artist). So there you go, this guy did a lot of things! I think the parts I liked the most from the message were "with organic sounds like my guitar and hand-clapping and whistling" - hand-clapping?!?!?!?! How fun should that be????? "It has been so much fun so far that it seems almost illegal" - Almost illegal??? huh... hehe... "All the while I hope to keep it all pretty lo-fi and raw sounding in the way we record it" - this is great!! I guess she wants never to come near close to Patrick Leonard again! When we first started hearing things about how Jewel's mixing up her styles for the new album, I was very interested to hear it, but also pretty worried that Jewel had finally gone off her rocker :). But hearing Jewel's reasons for making this album and how excited and passionate about it has made me look forward to it a lot! I can't wait to hear it now, not because I think it's going to be the best album ever, but because it's going to be so different. I love how each of Jewel's albums are totally different from the last, and I can see her doing this kind of thing for years. If I was an artist I'd experiment just as Jewel is. Jewel's already inspired me to do lots of things - I can't wait for her to make me want to dance :). She sounds like she's doing great, at her creative zenith (or getting there...), and I'm really psyched to hear her new stuff when it is ready for our ears. She's so cool. I love that woman...don't know her personally, but I really respect her creativity and passion. And it's sweet the way she communicates with her fans. Lord knows she deserved that break. That girl works her arse off. Hats off to her...she's moving and shaking and doing her thing, and what could be cooler than that? She's truly alive, and that's admirable... Not really... A lot of her 'poppier' songs make me smile, tap my feet, maybe nod my head, but they don't make me want to actually get on a dancefloor and dance. I look forward to that, that's what I mean. I can't exactly see people in clubs dancing to Standing Still or The New Wild West - and the Serve The Ego remixes don't count 'cos that's all the remixer's work, not Jewel's :). I'm still really looking forward to the new album though. Jewel seems to be enjoying making it so much anyway. And even if I end up not liking it, I know that the next album's going to be completely different anyway, so it doesn't matter, hehe. I spent the New Year sipping coconut drinks and sitting in a hot tub. The house belonged to a friend and they were gracious enough to let Ty and me stay there. I ate way too much and slept a lot and caught up on movies. It was the first break I've had since I released my last CD. I have been writing songs on off-days while on tour, and now that I'm done touring I have been going at the new songs without any distractions. I'm very excited about the new CD. This is the first time I'm writing songs specifically for a record. Usually I just pick through my catalogue and write a few to fill in the holes. But this time I had a whole new vision for my CD. I got to thinking about the times we are living in, politically and socially. I thought back to the 2nd World War and how Big Band music reached its zenith. During a time of tremendous uncertainty and strain, Big Band music offered an escape. People packed into small rooms and lost themselves in the rhythm and swing of the music. The windows fogged from sweat and men pressed their partners up against them and they felt like within the walls of that dance hall everything was OK and that they were young and that their passion was enough to make the whole world seem right. I want the music on my next record to make everyone feel like that. I want this collection of songs to make everyone want to move and dance and let themselves be hypnotized, forgetting all their troubles and letting nothing but melody take their place. This record is more about rhythm and dance than my past ones. I'm writing most of the record with a really talented guy named Lester Mendes. He's great at programming. We write the music together and I write the lyrics and melodies as usual. I love writing with him. We write with the same ease and creative freedom as Steve Poltz and I did. I asked him to co-produce the record with me. We are doing it at my house. I have set up a whole studio in my old office and I'm excited to be at home instead of away from home even more. I think this is my best record. I have 10 or so songs written and we're still writing. This record may seem pretty different to you all; I'm not sure. I'm combining R&B and hip hop rhythms with dance rhythms with '80s synth sounds with organic sounds like my guitar and hand-clapping and whistling. All the while I hope to keep it all pretty lo-fi and raw sounding in the way we record it. It has been so much fun so far that it seems almost illegal. I am really happy with where I am creatively. I have a confidence and finally a grasp on craft so I worry less and just have fun with the whole process. I'll try to keep in touch as we record and tell you how it's going. I hope everyone is healthy and happy in the New Year. Obviously she is the best artist out of anyone who was nominated, but since her album didn't do well, it really doesn't matter how good it was. The grammys are a pr event, basically to promote the "good" albums of the year. it's annoying, but that's how it is. anyway, i also wanted to add that i really liked sheryl crow's album, and I don't think that her being nominated for rock performance is a joke, but avril definitely was. her album was good too, but i wouldn't consider sk8er boi to be anything but pop. ok, that's all i wanted to say ~Liz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jan 2003 17:28:27 -0330 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: [EDA] Jewels Message Ive signed up for Jewelink a few times now, but I never get any emails.
