I forget the band though. That was probably Pearl Jam, a few years back. I'm pretty sure they sold copies of every date on one of their tours, it was a fairly well produced series... I think the whole concert CD thing is a cute idea but realistically, probably not going to happen. Concert merchandise is pretty big business and it's not like they're going to approach something that isn't profitable. Producing a million CDs and selling them at $15 a piece is profitable... producing 1000 CDs (I'd say that's a pretty high number) and selling them at $15 a piece... not nearly as profitable, even if you claim that very little production work is put into it. You're talking about $15 million in sales or $15,000 in sales. As far as devaluing bootlegs goes... how valuable are bootlegs these days anyway? Recording a show in decent quality is easy as hell and getting that into CD-Audio is simple. We've got some really decent full-length recordings circulating (certainly as good as MTV Unplugged or DDDelight), for free! Dave Matthews Band has put out at least 3 concerts on CD that I can think of in the last few years, and I dont think it had any affect whatsoever on the value, monetary or sentimental, of other live (bootleg) recordings that have been circulating. My $0.10 James ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 02:08:52 EST From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Live Recording Series The Who seem to have done pretty well off of it to produce money for their charities. The margin seems to be better than the $0.50 per ticket already given to Clearwater. And being a 2 cd set this is $20 - $25 gross per sale. If the net is only a buck or two (but let's be realistic - taking the recordings straight from soundboard and putting them straight to CD-R and placing them in a cardboard sleeve with a setlist on them then selling them at $22.50 per show is going to be more profitable than a buck or two per sale) then she can easily raise funds for her own charities at a nice clip while not on tour. There's no fancy packaging. It's straight DAT to CD-R. (Buy a Who recording at TheMusic.com - it's not doctored or produced in any way - if there was a problem in the sound at the show, that's what you get on the recording. It's a simple transfer with the most limited amount of packaging possible - the production costs are absolutely minimal). I think that they can find a way to cost-effectively produce these for far less than an officially released CD. Check out Ani DiFranco's sales. She presses for about $5 - $6 a disc. And, she doesn't have to produce a million. And, she has the CD Booklet inset etc. There is no question that the means can work towards an altruistic means. And, when you buy a Who show you're buying all of them since the setlist almost never varies. You just buy the one that you went to (not many people can afford to follow them with their ticket prices) and that's it. But, how many Jewel fans would buy multiple shows. And, if they want to trade some of them amongst themselves - there's still no real harm in that since these are available on a limited basis only. The fans get something that they want - quality recording keepsakes of shows that they have attended or shows that they missed and Jewel played their favorite song at. And, Jewel's charitable work can get a significant financial shot in the arm. If Ani can earn $6 or more per disc sold (which she does) and here's have all of the fancy production put into them - I fail to see where they can't find a way to boost the margin on recordings like these to $10 per unit. I'm not saying that this is a multi-million dollar idea for Jewel and Clearwater. But, it has to be an easy enough way to make $200,000 - $500,000 in relatively easy fundraising money - then repeat the process each tour. In the immortal words of Charles Barkley - I may be wrong - but, I doubt it. I do agree that the magazine would probably sell really well and yeah, it may attract a few more concert goers, but it's not going to be because of the music. I totally disagree with idea of Jewel posing in Playboy. I think I would lose alot, if not all, respect that I have for her. For some reason I feel compelled to address this issue...could be because I quite possibly have the largest collection of "those magazines" of anyone on the list. ;) I would be disappointed if Jewel were to pose for either Maxim or Playboy. This is not to say that I wouldn't BUY several copies of the issue if she did...but I would be shaking my head in disbelief all the way to the counter. I don't look at her this way...well...I TRY not to look at her this way. Her voice is what drew me in, and it is why I'm still here 6+ years later. As for Maxim, FHM, Stuff, etc...these magazines are garbage. If we're talking content of the articles, Playboy is a far better, more legitimate publication. And, as far as I'm concerned, well-done nudes are far more tasteful than the trash they typically run in Maxim and the like. (Sucking on a lollipop seductively, indeed?!?!) And...as someone who has been a subscriber to Playboy longer than many on the list have been alive, I can say one thing for certain. When a woman of any level of celebrity poses in Playboy, her career is usually either a) on the way up, or b) on the way down. Jewel certainly doesn't need to pose to raise her level of visibility either way. So, do I want to see it? No. But would I buy it, and be supportive of it (like she gives a damn what I think), should she ever choose to do it ? Well, duh! Yes, of course. Which leads a bit into what I think of the new album directions. I cannot stand hip-hop, electronica, or any of Jeff Townes' or Linda Perry's work I've ever heard. So I may not like the new album much, if that is the direction it's taking. But would I go so far as to say she shouldn't do it? Hell no! Musicians are artists...and artists must work first and foremost to please themselves. If we, as fans, don't like something, that's fine. But the artists should feel free to do it; to let their creativity roam free; whether it sells millions or not. They shouldn't feel pressured into making hits, singles, videos, etc. I'd love to see Jewel start her own label... I'm glad Poltz is starting his own label... I'm glad Patty Griffin was picked up by Dave Matthews' label. Anything to give the artist more freedom to do what they want without so much corporate pressure to meet the bottom line. So...if she makes an album I don't like, I'll be here for the next one. Truth be told, I don't like This Way all that much. But that didn't stop me from seeing her 7 times this year (I'm no Dave, but I do what I can.) As long as she still has that voice, I'm not going anywhere. Okay, I'm done. Keep in mind that the entirey of the above is just this man's opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. Micheal, you even want her poetry book to be filled with pictures of her playing with Ty? I dont know how naughty you exactly want them to be, but that would take a lot of the professionalism and sophistication out of a poetry book. Its gonna be spicy and hot poems, yes, but filling it with pictures like that would not make it look like someone who is really serious about the contents. Its written word not eye candy! However, perhaps when you think of the pictures you see them differently than the idea I got from you, something to compliment the poetry and the books theme of love. But also... you said if you could ask her one question it would be what about her lengerie, etc etc. I dont know if you were just joking around or if that is seriously what you would ask. But arent there more intellectual or at least relevant things you could ask her? Sorry to be focusing on just you Micheal, but it really stands out with you. Everyday you send out *several* emails about Jewel is looking more beautiful, Jewel is sexy, she is hot, how you want to see some nude pictures of her or fantasize about her, comparing her to Britney and Christina even. Yes, Jewel is very beautiful, I know, I really think so too, but there is more to her than her looks. Try to focus on whats coming from her mouth, what shes trying to say. What I see with Jewel when I look at her amazing voice and the inspiration and strength she gives me. Not her breasts, although they are great I have to admit. Now, Im sure you will reply to this along the lines of sorry sorry or everything about Jewel is amazing, everything, etc etc etc., like the time when you kinda got dissapointed saying she was going downhill because of small things she was doing like inviting more people up on stage, making it less special for you, who has had the opportunity to see many many Jewel concerts, which are incredibly special in themselves. Or the direction in which she was taking to expand her musics present boundaries. Think about it all and make an honest opinionated decision on how you feel about everything about her, before sending back an e-mail saying how Jewel is amazing in everything and perfect and youll love her til you die. Jewel is not perfect, she is extremely amazing, but no one is perfect. So try to make honest opinionated replies. But maybe its just your english, and if so, Im sorry about this comment. Oi, Im really really sorry for this Micheal. Perhaps some of it is your English skills. Perhaps Im exagerating tonight, because Im really, *really* tired and kinda grouchy, and I feel like blah right now. So maybe Im just being negative. Im sorry for singling you out of everyone. But I've have just been finding it a little annoying how everything you talk about Jewel has to do with how she looks. Its more annoying since you have been to so many concerts, and have been up stage, had pictures taken, autographs, etc, and are disregarding all the amazing things that come from that and just talking about her looks. So please, lets try to focus on what comes from Jewels mouth more than how she looks. Sorry about that Micheal, I don't mean any offense to you. You seem like a great guy and you are definanately one of the biggest and most supportive fans of Jewel ever. I just had to let you know how I felt about a lot of your e-mails. Jewel is an amazing artist. She is serious about what she does, you cant say she isnt. She is beautiful, but even more talented. Focus on that sometimes isntead of her looks, everyone. I dont think Playboy or especially Maxim would be her thing. She has already turned down Maxim, which I am glad. Showing it all for the sake of gaining fans is not being an artist for the music, its just to drag in more fans for the sake of fame. Jewel is in it for the music. Sorry if this email was bad, or hurt anyones feelings, or that I singled you out Micheal, Im really sorry if I hurt you or anyone, cause I think youre all great and I love you all ^_^. I just had to let how I felt out! Thanks, and again, Im really sorry if I was harsh or hurtful.
