I cannonballed (and split my knee) NEAR Shane (cuz he dared me) so I gave myself half the points I'll try and name the Harris Family- Dennis, Amy Neufiled, Tom Proven?, Kim Zercher, Chris Moynihan, Selina?, 2 weirdos Dennis met at MacExpo whom both were named Harris, Steve Poltz?, and Stinky? Do I get any points if I've received emails from a plywood cow? I've been to every Bearsville reunion! Go me! Here's my review of jewel's solo acoustic show on November 21st, 2002 from the Indiana University Auditorium. It was my first Jewel show ever, weird considering i've been on this list since '98 and i've been a jewel fan since her POY days... It was beautiful venue...one of those ornate theaters Steve Poltz sang his "Dahmer's Song" and "Sugar Boogers" songs in. The audience was suprisingly subdued for the most part. I can see why Poltzy had some problems getting a laugh at times. Opening Act: I dont' know his name, but he was Jewel's lead guitarist in her band last year, so as you can imagine, he was good on the guitar. He did a good job as a solo acoustic singer...although he admited to cheating using a pedal as the rhythm guitar so he could play lead. I don't remember what he played, but he invited a girl to clap along to a banjo song. The funny thing was she looked JUST LIKE jewel!! ...everyone was like "is that jewel" ...but it wasn't ...just some random girl! Then he did a Zepplin cover on the Banjo! ..."Dancing Days" was done really well...he had the slide going! he ended the set by saying to buy his cd in the lobby as he was not yet signed. I was gonna, but it cost 10 bucks for 5 songs...and i'm poor right now, so it wasn't worth it. Jewel: here's the setlist...i don't remember the exact order...and i may be off on a few songs: Does Anybody Believe in Love Anymore - - great opener...i never heard it in such good quality, as all i've heard is bootlegs of it, now i see why everyone loves it so much Near You Always - - everyone recognized this one and cheered of course!! ...cool talk to crowd- - - jewel said hi. i think this is where she told the crowd that she got "in trouble for calling Bob Dylan "gay" Passing Time - -she paused where she says "waiting for my Marlon Brando to crash thru the gates" ...then she says 'wait i don't like marlon...who'd hot?' '...i know Paul Newman!' ...then she sings the lyric with "waiting for my Paul Newman to crash...NO wait...he couldn't crash thru anything! he's too old! ...man i better shut up, i'm gonna get in the papers again!' Then she started the song again, this time with "Randy Newman" in place of Marlon Brando. Everything Breaks - -not much to say here other than no one had a clue where this song came from...great job though...this song should be on an album someday!! Little Sister (requested) - -Jewel began asking for requests at this point...someone yelled out "STEVE POLTZ" for some reason...made me laugh. somebody asked for 1000 Miles Away and she was gonna play it, got her "lyric book" out, but she never played it? hmm...guess she got distracted...nice "little sister" though, again everyone digged it just cuz they knew it! Cowboy Waltz (? requested) - -I have no idea what this song was! ...everyone was asking for a yodel, and jewel seemed a little annoyed by that...but she said i have a yodel for ya, but it's a cowboy yodel...and i think that the song was Cowboy Waltz, although i'm not sure. She said it was from a guys point of view. Hands - -This is the part of the show that starts to get muddled for me. I think she did hands here, but i'm not sure. It was good...but nothing much to say about it really. Sometimes it Be That Way - -i can't really remember much again! ..but i do remember she said when she started playing this "You guys actually listen to the bonus tracks?" Jesus Loves You - -at some point, and i'm not sure if it was before this song, she tells a story how Tommy Hilfilger wanted her for her "natural looks" for an ad, but then they 'fixed her teeth' ...the song itself was pretty normal...but good! The New Wild West - -not too much to say about it other than she sang it really powefully!! she tuned down the low E string of her guitar for this song, which i didn't know she did for this song, but it added a nice percussive sound in this song Life Uncommon - - I think she said she wrote this for her best friend. who graduated from IU!! yay! again another song that utilized that percussive sound caused by the tuned down low E string. She sang this song awesomely...hit some insane notes!! Morning Song - -nice song. again rather percussive. ...this is one of my favorite jewel songs...so i was pretty pleased to hear this one! Violet Eyes - -she said before the song she wrote this song for her friend who died of cancer....it was a great, emotional performance. Most didn't know this song obviously, but they should! Cold Song - -she said before this song that if there was one song she could save and have represent her career as a whole than this would be the song. and of course she added, that as with all great, insightful songs, it is a polka. The people next to me were like "what the hell is this?" ...duh Break Me - -nothing abnormal about this song to report...just really powerful and emotional talk to audience- - -she told the incident that inspired Racecar Driver. when the dude asked to show jewel's boobs nonchalantly as if he were asking the time. funny story, but pretty routine i guess. Racecar Driver - -cool version. she added ooo's and aaah's during the bridge which i hadn't heard before... pretty neat...people were laughing during this song alot...obviously this was new one for most too. Foolish Games - -never heard the acoustic version for this...nice You Were Meant for Me - -i think she went straight into this one...no drug bust story w/ Steve Poltz...pretty routine i guess kermit intro- - -she talked about the first time she heard herself on the radio...on the top 10 between Nirvana and Soundgarden. But she found out she sounds like Kermit the frog when she sings the chorus!! She then looked over to the backstage area and said "there's some guy back there watching football!!! I guess he's ignoring me...What's the score? yeah, he's ignoring me..makes me feel good!" Who Will Save Your Soul - -pretty routine, she did her scatting thing....got a good reaction from the audience, not to anyone's surprise. - -----encore per la Gloria d'adoraria - -opera sounding thing...i think this was the name of it! i don't know! ...nice though...she did it sans guitar Chime Bells - -she ended with this yodeling ditty like usual...no guitar, but still fun! She said she figured the people here would like it better than the Cowboy yodel thing... people seemed too obsessed by her yodeling though...she DOES do other things though! overall great show!! i'm not sure what else to say! I smuggled a camara in, so i'll develop pictures and put them on my site...i don't know how well they turned out though, cuz i couldn't use my flash cuz i didn't want to get caught!
