The word is just a word. If it is intended to hurt or to insult, then it is wrong and should not be used. But not everyone agrees with that and some people do use it to hurt. If you use it to mean something else though and use it more casually to mean other things, the word will soon lose its offensive meaning. No word in the English language or any language should be considered unacceptable. Because they are words. And words are a way for us to express our feelings. So words should only mean what the person using them wanted them to mean. Also, you can insult a homosexual in other ways without using that word. My point is that any "disparaging word" should be acceptable and not forbidden as long as it wasn't meant to hurt or insult. But people are going to use them in that way regardless. But censoring the word will only make it more hurtful. That is my opinion on the topic.
