Just wanted to let you guys know that I was up in Madison for a Creed concert this past weekend and I came across a promotional Jason Mraz CD. We had gone down town to a disc-go-round and I found a whole stack of a 3-track Mraz CD. Its got studio versions of Remedy, You and I both, and a live version of Common Pleasure. I picked up a few extras if anyone is interested in trading for it. Just think, this could be like Jewel's PBFGAB or STL is he gets big!! No matter how famous Jewel is , no matter how famous she is , i have seen 40 shows in my life of jewel, 25 shows in 2002 and 12 in the states, and at 11 shows she told the dylan story, the don?t give away the good part of the show and also she told the fans 11 times the drug bust storie. i agree that all the shows have been a little on CRUISIN mode. Despite i love jewel so much, how gorgeous she is, how lovely, pretty and all the things i can say but jewel is really a little boring with the news. i always thought jewel would think about more.. but i am just telling jewel mixed up more various songs on her tours in 1995/1998. Since the spirit tour the variety is less and less. still jewel is a great performer, one of the most beautiful and honest artists in music life, but she has to do better.. but hey give the girl the credits, she works her butt off but she has been always sensational.. now she is working on a movie, and late in 2003 a new record will be released, and no SUMMER tour in 2003 will be held.. no way, a movie Custodity is really famous! that will help jewel?s acting carreer flourish! greetings, michiel - -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: owner-jewel@smoe.org [mailto:owner-jewel@smoe.org]Namens Lseids@aol.com Verzonden: maandag 18 november 2002 20:15 Aan: jewel@smoe.org Onderwerp: [EDA] Retiring Jewel's YWMFM Story 11 concerts over 7 years and I'm getting bored of hearing the Mexico story -- Besides, I don't get the point anyway -- I mean, did the Federalies and AK-47's actually inspire Jewel and Steve to write YWMFM? It was an emotional new twist, and Jewels voice seemed more older and mature, and just beautiful. Its a shame that it is not the whole song, but just a clip. I guess they want you to buy the album after hearing these little teasers. Jeweljk.com should consider a members area such as the one the GooGoo Dolls official site has for people who buy their cd. (Upon inserting the cd into your computer, a flash window comes up, and directs you to the special section of the site.) That way we can hear some great live versions of songs in their entirity, since we have already payed for them commercially. Joe K ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 06:50:23 -0500 From: T H Subject: [EDA] another newspaper article Jewel in the rough Folk singer grounds herself with personal album and solo acoustic tour stopping Thursday in Bloomington By Jennifer Piurek, Special to the Hoosier Times BLOOMINGTON Just three years ago, Jewel did something unusual for a multi-platinum-selling pop singer in the early years of her career: She quit. The endless touring, promotion and interviews had left the singer-songwriter drained and uninspired. "I had become so famous, I was talking about music more than I was making it," she said in a recent phone interview from her home in San Diego. "I had lost the drive once the focus on art changed." But Jewel who will perform Thursday at Indiana University found she couldn't stay away from music for long. She became re-inspired while spending much of her hiatus in Texas with boyfriend Ty Murray, a champion rodeo performer. There, she was able to reconnect with nature and spend time alone in wide-open spaces, something that hadn't been in the schedule for years. Out flowed her fourth album, This Way, released last November, a more personal, grittier collection than her previous efforts and Jewel's first stab at co-production, working with noted guitarist-producer Dann Huff. But she's jumped off the publicity machine that once ran her life, doing only the things that feel right. Jewel recently declined an offer to appear on Rolling Stone magazine's "Women in Rock" cover alongside the likes of Britney Spears, Shakira and Avril Lavigne. "Their list wasn't singer-songwriter based," she said. "You can't knock that sort of thing those girls work very hard. But (the group chosen for the cover) didn't seem to embody women in rock. It wasn't one I wanted to be a part of. Would Chrissy Hynde (of the Pretenders) look at that and laugh? Probably." Then there was the offer to appear on the cover of Maxim, the men's magazine known for its risqui covers. Again, Jewel passed. "It comes down to time opportunities come up all the time that don't move me or aren't convenient to do. My label has known about me that what sells me is just me being true to myself. If it's contrived it would bomb." But her record label, Atlantic, wouldn't have minded the Maxim, um, exposure. "They really wanted me to do that one," Jewel laughed. Her visit to Indiana University's campus marks the second leg of Jewel's "New Wild West" solo acoustic tour. The first part of the tour, which began in mid-August, was the first time she had played guitar through an entire performance since April, when she was injured after being thrown from a horse, breaking her collarbone and a rib. Now fully recovered, Jewel is touring but on her own terms: Three-week bursts with 10 days off to write. "It works really well for me, and I'm a lot happier this time," she said. Jewel's decision to tour without a band was an attempt to return to her musical roots. "I grew up bar-singing with my dad, with him playing guitar. The acoustic show goes back to the way I was raised, an old-school kind of entertainment. An acoustic show is hardest to pull off it's harder than playing with a band. There's more interaction with the audience, and it's an intensely personal show." Jewel's own journey to success is well-known. A singer-songwriter with the face of an angel and a voice to match, Jewel Kilcher spent much of her childhood in Alaska singing in nightclubs with her folk-singer parents. At 18, she lived in a van in San Diego and performed at the Inner Change Cafi, gradually building up a cult following until she was signed by Atlantic Records in 1994. After a meteoric rise to success in 1995 (her first album, Pieces of You, sold more than 11 million copies nationwide), Jewel wrote a best-selling book of poetry, released a sextuple-platinum album, Spirit, put out a Christmas album, starred in Ang Lee's Ride With the Devil, and published a collection of journal writings. It was then that she decided to step back from the business and reconnect with her art. "I'd probably find it pretty easy to be successful without fame. What's important is not needing fame to validate my moves," she said. Jewel is currently working on a "fun, not too serious" album she'd like to put out by June, combining dance music and soul with folk lyrics. After that will come a rootsier singer-songwriter effort. Just don't expect her to bare it all in an attempt to compete with the scantily clad "women in rock" currently taking up so much space on the airwaves and magazine covers. "No one chooses your focus but you. Nobody makes you parade your flesh in front of your music. People said Madonna was liberating for women, but her music was all based on sexual imagery. There's a lot to be said for not showing it all being much more seductive." Opening Jewel's show will be winners of her Soul City Cafi contest, a program she created to provide opportunities for emerging artists. "I started Soul City Cafi because of how corporate the music industry has become. Today, an artist like me never would have been signed," Jewel said, describing the program as a way to get performers into the recording studio immediately, without having to wait years for development. Jewel fans can expect her to continue doing things her own way, regardless of trends in the music industry. "To me, relevance means staying honest about where you are. The most important thing to me is maintaining my authenticity." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 15:03:30 -0500 From: "jake skyles" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel 2003 Summer Tour // Movie I don't think we should take this too seriously yet. Naive to what the word means to gay people? Gay people themselves use it all
of the time. Its a double standard like a caucasian unable to say "nigger"
without causing great offense while african-americans are free to use it any
way and any time they want. Again, the word "faggot" should only be taken
offensively when it's meant offensively. Like someone else said, if you want
to stir controersey about Jewel, start with Serve the Ego, Pieces of You,
and possibly Jesus Loves You (NO she is NOT promoting abortion. Its more of
a commentary on the issue. It's also annoying to hear people calling Jewel
evil and pro-abortion because they can't understand a songs lyrics
properly.) Thats all I have to say for now. But again, its up to the entire
gay community themselves to decide if this truely offended them or not. Most
of the people I hear being offended are straight people. (The exception of
the spokesperson from GLAD, and possibly some of its members.)Please
everyone can we just let this topic end? Its only a word used in a somewhat
innocent joke, not some revolution against the gay community.

hey jewelfans,

It seems that jewel is starting to screw up her carreer!

I try to say, she doesn4t vary a lot with her setlists, keep telling the old
fashioned 1994 brugbust storie. It all seems a little 2 beautiful to be
true. I really think it is way 2 much overdone by jewel recently. when you
take a look at her recent setlists i noticed the lack of really the old
jewel girlpower. She always surprised audiences with songs that nobody heard
of , all out of the blue. but with her recent tour she starts only to sing
the songs she knows. the time to rehears some good old classic songs is
hardly to count on one hand. the dylan story also didn4t really help jewel a
lot. incident or not, it is a big game that jewel plays by telling this
story over and over again..

she is certainly not writing the story of the beautiful sleeper!! i mean
jewel writes poems, books, acts and has a love poem book to be published
soon, but what i have noticed in september shows the contractdictonary.

I mean she is still phenomenal with vocals, with her beauty presence on
stage, and the way she can capt audiences..

but overall, her tour that she has been doing goes in my opinion too much on
ROUTINE!! it is just like a little journey to collect some high standard
ticketsales for her shows and if the reviews are telling that jason mraz is
better than jewel the headliner in some reviews, than that is shocking!

i always told the ENGLISH forum that jason mraz was in my opinion and idea
much more better than jewel and anticipating on the crowd by playing songs
and telling little funny stories..

So Jewel watch your step, dont get in singer songwriter custody!!

maybe you think its getting old because you've been to what is it 40 shows?
..

Jewel is amazing! Not everyone even knows her songs that aren't on
albums...Every JEwel fan I talked to at concerts didn't know any of her songs
that weren't on albums they were surprised that there was other songs...And I
love the Drug Bust story or whatever its called, Everytime I hear it it makes
me laugh! Plus she says it before the song, she didn't say it inspired her to
write the song or i haven't heard her say that...she said she managed to get
some writing done then....
Anyway Jewel is doing a lot of things write now with acting, coming out with
a new cd and book...Shes amazing, and I defintaly don't think shes "Screwing
up" her career.....I love Jewel she can't screw up! (except with the "faggot"
comment! lol)
