Christy the Tattoed angel ===== "Lend your voices only to sounds of freedom." -- Jewel HotJobs - Search new jobs daily now http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 02:25:35 -0600 From: "Lew - New World Warehouse" Subject: RE: [EDA] SJC What is talent?? I totally agree with Christy on this one. I've maintained that opinion several times over. Singing, while tough, is not unique and for the most part, anyone can really do it....some may need more vocal training than others, but even some of the most seemingly "unique" artists have taken voice lessons (even the guy from Disturbed). As a songwriter, I've always been frustrated when I see artists like Jewel that have busted ass and worked hard to make it up the ladder, while "formula" music like Britney and N-Sync top the charts. Most of that music is all marketing...basically like listening to a really long commercial. Now, don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against these people because they are still out there working their asses off. Britney I think catches a lot of flak that she doesn't deserve, but I also think she is taken too seriously by some. A lot of people discount Shakira right now, but what they don't realize is she not only writes her music, but she also helps produce it and plays quite a few instruments as well. If you listen to her older stuff (though if you don't know spanish, it takes a bit), you'll find her style is similar to the direction that Jewel is moving in now. Inevitable sounds like a Jewel tune, just in Spanish (there is an English version available on the web you can sometimes find). It's frustrating being in a band and being a songwriter and feeling like you are getting nowhere because you are actually trying to make some real music on your own instead of just strutting out, looking good and learning some dance moves. I've been writing songs since I was 8 or 9 and have been playing since I was 7. Amateur songwriters are VERY under appreciated and like it or not, when an artist "makes it" they deserve all the recognition, money and whatever else they get because there is a LOT of work to do as a musician. Too many people out there think that they just lounge around and have it easy. You try working a job where there is little to no pay and no guarantee you'll EVER get any money or fame from it all. Most people who aren't true musicians would quit after a few months, maybe a few years. Either way, next time you hear Jewel complain she can't make an interview, she doesn't feel like doing something, or feels she's losing money due to internet downloading, stop and think how long she spent doing endless gigs in clubs and hitching rides to get where she is. If anyone would be interested in trading digitally, sending the angelfood over internet then that would be really great. Also, if anyone have a live recording of Jewel performing Absence of Fear on her This Way Tour it would make my day if anyone could send it to me :-) I think she performed it two or three times. Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 14:11:57 -0600 From: "Rachel DeSchepper" Subject: [EDA] CD covers Came out of perpetual lurkdom to talk about CD covers. Linda Perry (in my opinon) is one of the most brilliant songwriters ever. I've loved almost everything she's done, and her collaberations are the best! Check out the song "My Vietnam" by Pink, and "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. They're both really good, and she worked on both. :) Lauren Fredsteve@aol.com wrote:Hey Guys I'm excited about the news that Jewel is collaborating again with Linda Perry. I thought the production value on Sweet Home Alabama was EXCELLENT.... they got a really cool rock sound and Jewel's vocal performance was one of her best.
