It was pretty interesting - they ended up settling and afterwards, Jewel got up and gave the ex-manager a hug, showing that there were no hard feelings. Her latest adventure included a few days of collaborative writing and demo recording with Linda Perry, who recently produced Jewel's cover of "Sweet Home Alabama," the title track to the current hit movie and soundtrack CD. For those unfamiliar with Linda Perry's work, she originally gained attention as the lead singer and primary songwriter of 4 Non Blondes. In addition to her recent production work with Jewel, she's also been sitting in the producers' chair for Pink, Christina Aguilera and Courtney Love. Jewel also recently spent a few days working with Rick Nowels, the exceptional producer and songwriter who co-wrote "Standing Still" and "This Way" for Jewel's last album. Rick's credits are almost endless, but he's also well known for his collaborations with Madonna, k.d. lange, Celine Dion, Stevie Nicks, The Coors, Dido and a long list of others. Jewel's newest demos continue to blur the boundaries of her music and she's finding collaboration and experimentation a challenging and enjoyable experience. Some artists get stuck in the same mold. Sometimes audiences want artists to stay stuck in a mold and not develop. I say amen to whatever direction wants to go in. It's not like she's going to abandon her folk and country and rock roots. I think she's proven herself to be a master at jazz, opera and other stuff. Why not R&B, rap, reggae and hip-hop? Not that that's what she's doing. But...I don't see why she should be stuck in a box when she obviously enjoying stretching her vocal chords and her styles, collaborating and expanding her repertoire...more power to her. I mean, from folk to pop to country to rock to dance music...why the hell not? She can scat with the best of them and yodel. Is there any genre that she couldn't do? I'd be surprised. I think whatever is stimulating and interesting to her at the moment is where she should go. Not to sell records (although obviously she is under some pressure I'm sure to do that). But she strikes me as someone who is both business savvy and true to herself and her artistry, if one can be both at the same time. And it may be possible, particularly if you're Jewel. I need to get into more male artists, so maybe I'll check him out. I just hope the record isn't overproduced, though, 'cause I'm really not into overproduction. And with lots of artists their first albums come out totally overproduced when they sound folky live. And I'm sure I'd probably really like him live. I remember him being on the list a while back. That's awesome that he's generated a buzz in the SoCal scene. I hope he does well...and what an honor to be touring with the lovely miss J. I haven't gotten tickets to any of her latest acoustic shows in NOvember, but I was eyeing the one at SuNy Purchase with Jason Mraz opening. I probably still have time to get tix, although not the best in the house I"m sure. Glad at least someone enjoyed the house concerts article. Another artist I've always meant to check out but never have is Cindy Lee Berryhill, who I know did or does a lot of house concerts and used to play with Jewel. This is not one of those "Avril rocks!" or "Avril sucks!" posts, so don't worry :) I've been reading varioius posts about how talented or untalented Kelly Clarkson and Avril are, as well as other artists over the last few months. I just wanted to get a feel for what people think "talent" is as far as music is concerned. I am not a musician, so my opinion on what constitutes a "talented musician" is based soley on personal taste. There are many artists out there that I don't like, but I still think they have talent (Eminem, Avril Lavigne, most of the American Idol kids...) and I can appreciate that they are working hard. I think there are people out there to jump to quickly on the "they suck, they have no talent" bandwagon and it really upsets me. Maybe because I grew up taking dance and acting lessons and I saw alot of kids who went to New York to try thier luck, many who "made it". They have great voices, they can act and they can dance and were just trying to get their break in whatever they could first whether it be Broadway, recording contracts, sitcoms, soaps, commercials etc. When I look at performers like J. Lo and Britney and N'Sync I see my friends from dance classes. I know there are alot of people in the world and on this list who would say that these guys have no talent, they are sell outs and puppets for the record producers. I guess I don't see it that way. I see people who work long hours in studios (dance and recording) perfecting songs and shows. They may have varying degrees of control over what they sing, but they are still talented and working very hard to stay in the business. This is similar to the work that a broadway performer would do while preparing for a show. Are broadway singers untalented because they don't write the shows they perform in? Are actors untalented because they don't write the scripts for the movies and plays they are in? I can understand people prefering to listen to music, rather than have it held up by the crutch of fancy lights and dance moves but I think there is merit in both. It is all art in some form. I can understand the desire to have more artists who write their own songs getting noticed by the general public. I would like that too. If someone has a great voice but they can't write a song, are they not worth listening to though? What about people who can only write songs, but have no voice...where would they be if only singer/songwriters were heard by the general public? On this note, I have to say that I do think radio is very homogenous (sp??) and there are very talented people who are not being heard by the general public, not becasue performers like Britney and Kelly Clarkson exist though, but becasue their songs are played 50 times a day. Sorry this is so long...I really hope I have not offended anybody, though my opinions may be unpopular with some people :) I am really interested in hearing what other people have to say on this lists on this subject. Thanks :) ~Claire ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #471 ***************************
