We're driving down from Cincinnati and staying the night, wanted to know if anyone else was going to go, maybe we could get together for a dinner before the show or something! Email privately and I'll see how many people reply, although even if only one or two people reply, it would still be fun to get together! I got a copy too and have listened to it once. I doubt I'll ever play it again. There is so little of Jewel in it. She has just been used as an excuse for a CD of this sort of "music", which, probably because I'm one of the more (most) elderly members of this list, doesn't appeal to me at all. Jewel's clever lyrics have been obliterated by the incredibly boring thump, thump thump. Jewel's music is lyric-driven and that's what I like about her songs, what I find interesting and stimulating. "Serve the Ego" is such a good example of this, but from this CD you'd never know. But, de gustibus and all that. Artistically it seems an odd way for Jewel to go, if she really had much say in it -- but then she is a great experimenter (which I like). Atlantic look like making money out of it, though, so it was a good decision for them, and that means Jewel and HGH will get something out of it too. So it's not all bad. Take care, Barry Howarth "'Cause anyone can start a conflict It's harder yet to disregard it I'd rather see the world from another angle We are everyday angels ..." Remember, though, she does get a bit sceptical and some times just bored with interviews. So she may say things just for the effect. I was drawn to Jewel's music and lyrics long before I knew what she looked like. Always one who refused to paint inside the lines or be pigeonholed into a clear-cut musical genre, Jewel's newest demos continue to blur the boundaries of her music with unbridled experimentation and adventurousness. Jewel's latest stop on the highway of music led her to Philadelphia, where she spent several days earlier this month collaborating and recording four new tracks with famed producers Jeff Townes (better known as DJ Jazzy Jeff), P-Nut (of 311 fame) and Pete Kuzma at A Touch Of Jazz Studios, which has been responsible for some of Philadelphia's most popular music, including Jill Scott, Bilal, Darius Rucker, Paula Abdul, Tatiani Ali and of course Will Smith, Jeff's longtime collaborator. Demos of Jewel's newest material show her exploring the fusion of hip hop, soul, reggae, jazz and European electronica into a mix quite unlike anything she has pursued before. Some of these experiments also exude an old-school rhythm-and-blues sophistication and a jazzish buoyancy unlike any of her previous recordings. Where are these songs being played? Does anybody know? That is just MrBB mentioning what is playing on his stereo system now-a-days. It's common on a lot of mailing lists to see a "now playing" and/or a "now reading" at the end of a post...often abbreviated NP and NR. It lets other members know what others are groovin' to. I don't consider myself an 'old school' EDA, just an 'old' one. Being 33, not listening to radio, & not having cable, I'm a bit past the "OMG" stage of falling in "love" w/ every new flavor of the month that the corporate record execs see fit to try and force in our ears and eyes. I've seen them on late nite shows, etc. ... and they just don't do it for me. I don't diss them, because it's just not worth my time. There are some posts to this list that annoy me, some that make me laugh out loud...I don't think some of the younger folk realize how self-parodying they are. (It's bad enough, like, when, like, they say 'like' every other word when they, like, talk; but when they, like, TYPE it?! OMG!) But I digress... I'm just saying that the Avril/Vanessa/Michelle talk gets old for me, too, so add me to that list. But hey, as long as they put "NJC" in their subject lines, I don't really care. No one is forcing me to read emails at gunpoint or anything. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 23:20:04 -0500 From: "Joseph Wu" Subject: [EDA] Chicago Show?
