How do you think people view you? Jewel: I don't know. If I was just to look at my audience on any given night, there's about fifty percent girls, fifty percent guys. Some of the guys are there because they like my tits, some are there because of the rock music at the end of the show. Girls are there because they want to be me, or because they want to write, or because their boyfriends brought them. Me: I agree with Stacey that this doesn't seem out of context... on the male side of things, she missed what I think is probably the biggest percentage: The Hopeless, Helpless, Fragile and Sensitives... that's a new personality type! Eat your heart out Jung... Anyway, I absolutely love the music, but when I hear the Morning Song I think about going *back* to bed with Jewel, and I love how every version of the Cold Song, the audience and Jewel both sort of stumble and laugh at "do you wanna do me" I'm surprised none of the ladies on the list have spoken up about being offended by what Jewel goes on to say... "Girls are there because they want to be me, or because they want to write, or because their boyfriends brought them" Now I'm not a girl but I'm thinking that my girlfriend ( a jewel fan ) does not want to Be Her, she doesn't like to write, and she would go to the concerts without me..... Personally I think she's the same Hopeless helpless fragile sensitive personality and that's why we connect with Jewel's music... Jewel: There's so many reasons and types -- there are little kids, and there are Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell fans who are in their forties and fifties. That's the cool thing about music: I don't have to worry about any of that. I just write music, and everybody gets out of it what they want. Me: That could've been a dececnt recovery at the end, that everybody gets what they want, but I think that she should've chosen her previous words more carefully. PRAISE YOUR FANS! Hi all, I don't remember if I've offered these to the list or not, so I wanted to do so now that I've received them in the mail... I've got one extra ticket for Louisville (fri 11/22/02), Section Orch Row BB (2nd row) seat 38... I've got two extra tickets for Thu 11/21/02 at Bloomington, Section Orch Row 7 Seats 401-402 If you're looking to upgrade your tickets this is a great chance... I'm really just looking to get out of them what I have in them. James ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 02:44:17 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] jewel's "sexy" attire I agree with the person who said that Jewel is smart and dresses a certain way to appeal to a certain audience. I think, to an extent, she does do that. In fact I would take it further and say that every element of her performance style and her image is somewhat designed to appeal to a specific demographic. I think she plays the line between appealing to the boys and appealing to the girls very well. I'm not saying it's all calculated and insincere, I'm just saying I think she realises what she's doing, to an extent. She gets the girls all drawn in by being very honest and forthcoming onstage both in her lyrics and in her demeanour. She makes them feel like they know her or like they're connecting to her personally. She gets the guys by dressing sexily (but not too slutty), and kind of adding a subtle sexual overtone to basically everything she does onstage. But she doesn't go too far on either side so as to break the balance. Ie - she doesn't lean as far as people like Ani DiFranco or even Alanis Morissette in the way of femenism and spirituality (which would probably alienate a good portion of her male audience), and she doesn't reach the sexual heights of Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears so as to alienate the female portion of her audience. She just plays the line. For example - at the show I went to she was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt. Doesn't sound all that "sexy", right?... in fact most of the feminist types in her audience would definitely approve, probably thinking "good for her, not submitting to the pressure to dress like a slut in this industry". However the person I went to the show with said I should look closer... in fact the jeans were very tight and reached exactly to the floor (making her legs looks longer), and she was wearing 6-inch heels, which shows that the jeans had in fact been measured and cut so that they would reach the floor with those specific shoes. And she had this little brown tassle hanging down the side which she played with. And the shirt wasn't just a shirt - it was ripped up one side to reveal a little bit of her belly, and it was more of a tanktop in that it didn't really have sleeves. And of course I didn't notice any of this during the show. I just thought she looked hot, and assumed the outfit was just "thrown on" cause "Jewel doesn't care about her looks"... it wasn't until my friend pointed everything out to me that I realised that it was probably more calculated than I originally thought. Anyway - I'm not saying that she's completely calculated and doing all this for sales or whatever, but I am saying there is an element of that in her, I'm sure. She's a smart woman, she knows what she's doing, and she realises how far she can go on either side in order to keep her audience. I'm also not saying that this applies to all guys and all girls. I don't just like Jewel for her looks. I don't think any guy on this list does, but I'm sure there are plenty of fans out there that do. And lets not forget the power of the subconcious. Maybe NOW I'm not a fan purely because of looks, but it's quite probable I first became interested in Jewel because of her looks. A friend of mine recently asked if I would like Jewel as much if she were in Jann Arden's body, and the truth is, probably not. Earlier this year the songwriter's production company, Magic Lantern Entertainment, purchased the Wave script, which was written by David Rothmiller and centers on the reunion of a mother and her estranged son in a small island community. "It's an independent film, and it's very sort of artist-driven," Jewel said of Wave. "It's a great piece." Jewel and her manager-mother Lenedra Carroll founded Magic Lantern Entertainment. The pair will serve as executive producers of the Wave project. Jewel previously co-starred opposite Tobey Maguire (news) (Spider-Man) in director Ang Lee (news)'s 1999 Civil War drama, Ride With The Devil. Jewel told LAUNCH that she feels that Wave will be a fitting follow-up to Ride With The Devil. "My first film was an Ang Lee film. It was a very tough act to follow, as you can imagine, and I thought I would finally just purchase a property that I believed in, I thought was a good story, and produce it and work it from the ground up. It's an ensemble piece, and I'd have one of the roles in it." In related news, Jewel will kick off the next leg of her New Wild West solo acoustic tour of North America in support of This Way on November 7 at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. - -- Jason Gelman, New York ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 17:37:40 -0400 From: "e a" Subject: [EDA] Jewel on Contents Magazine? Hi, all. Just wanted to know if Jewel was on the cover of the 11/02 issue of the magazine Contents or not. A friend of mine practically swears on their life that it's her, but I'm not so sure. Thanks. ____________________________________________________________ Get 250 full-color business cards FREE right now! http://businesscards.lycos.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 21:49:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Deb Hall Subject: [EDA] Re: Serve the Ego remixes Hi Amy, I listened to the music on line somewhere and it was 5 or 6 different versions of "Serve the Ego". One I liked better than all the others. They all had neat tech-no sounds added to them with her singing. But all the versions were cool. I think anyway. I am going to get it soon I hope. I did just today get my "Save the Linoleum" album Jewel did in 1994. I got it from Eli.com I got the heads up from a girl on this list that said it was there and it was expensive. The price was a big challenge but it won over being sane that day. I went there found it, it was only one there so Yes! I snagged it up and its all mine, now, all mine :+) I wanted it ever since I seen the cover somewhere a long time ago. I loved the "God greatest gift to women on it. What a brilliant mind this women has. And even when she was so young, so insightful. I just love her so much.
