Let's see, I was 11... there were plenty of things *I* didn't want to talk about, that I talk about now... lieing to my parents, for example... Jewel was what, 21, (according to the transcript provided on this list of the EXTRA interview) when all this was going on... more power to her (or anyone else) for making her own decision about what and when to talk about things... Although I think that many (most, all) of the songs on Jewel's albums are completely awesome in their own way, there is no way that each song could be released as a single and be successful. Obviously, that is just not how the music industry works. YET, she definitely has tracks on her albums that theoretically could have gotten more airtime, better promotion, and simply, much more attention overall, fans and critics included....we all have argued on this list as to what singles Jewel should release every time a new album comes out. Both with Spirit and This Way, I feel singles that were released after the first were not promoted well.....and other tracks may have done better had THEY been released. Why do we think this is?? I don't know if it has to do with Atlantic's focus elsewhere, her personal team of promoters, or some kind of a budget...Jewel was backed strongly in the beginning for Standing Still (and Hands for Spirit), and it was successful. After that, it's as if everyone decides, eh, that's enough, we'll just release a few more for the hell of it....Jewel's music IS good enough, hell great enough, to be promoted more and it almost disappoints me that listeners don't get to realize that past the first single. There's a lot of crappy music on the radio right now (although there is a slight wave of change occuring...still, with Clear Channel owning, oh, almost everything, it's hard to break through the molds..)..how come those promoters can get that music played, while Jewel's 2nd or 3rd singles are almost ignored? It just bothers me, and I wondered if anyone else has an opinion or knows why this happens?... amy *the raindrop angel* - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: Click Here ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Sep 2002 00:27:29 -0500 From: "Rob Hanning" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: JEWEL AND SEAN PENN It didn't seem to me that she said that much more than she has at other times. When she was on Charlie Rose back in '97, he asked her about it, & she said pretty much the same thing as she did to Gene. A little more detail of his support of her this time, but still nothing major. The first "why" that came to my mind, though, was simple...time. When a relationship ends, there's pain. It takes some time before you can feel comfortable talking about it...before it doesn't hurt just to hear the person's name sometimes. On the Charlie Rose show that I mentioned, he asked her about Sean shortly before she sang...and she sang "Emily". I swear that, by the time she was done w/ the song, there was a tear in her eye, and she kind of shook it off with a toss of her head. I've often wondered since then if that tear was just because of the emotional impact of the song itself, or if there was some other thought about the association w/ Penn's movie running through her head. I don't know...but that's one of those things I'd like to talk to her about if I ever get the chance for a real conversation! That's what I think. I vote "sick to death." No, just kidding (about the vote) - that would triple the volume of e-mails. I really want to comment on the fact that NJC e-mails are allowed, but I think you can infer from the rules and general JEWEL-related nature of this list that you are to use MODERATION in sending e-mails of this sort. I propose that you people carrying on this long, drawn out "is she good or is she bad?" symposium are not exercising discretion or moderation. Here's a real suggestion. Maybe those of you who are really interested in reading all about Avril's favorite flavor of bubblegum and how she gets her eye makeup so darn black should start your own little sub-EDA list. It could be called "EDAs who slum" and you could talk about all these little flashes in the pan as much as you want as long as it is only among yourselves and as far away from the main EDA list as possible. I don't preclude the possibility of future Avril-related e-mails being sent to the EDA list - little NJC tidbits like "wow - her new single isn't as bad as her first two" (as though that were even imaginable) or something similar would be fine, but again I remind you to go back to my suggested MODERATION principle. Hello EDAs, Just thought I'd post. First off, I find it pretty funny that people are "leaving the list" because there is so much immaturity, etc, etc...but yet they find it necessary to post one final email to say their farewells and do some insulting of their own. If you want to leave the list, you can do so quietly without posting a "yeah, you'll really miss me, I'm sure you care so much that I'm leaving" post. Haha...so sad. Give me a break. On a lighter note, that is a really kewel picture that Jewel drew for the Clearwater thing. Wish they would sell normal, cheap posters of it on jeweljk.com. Can't afford to give anymore to Clearwater at this point. Here's a topic. Which aspect of Jewel's other talents is the best or is your favorite? Other than singing, is her artwork, her acting, or her poetry the best? I personally think it's her modeling.
