Charlie? Charlie's among the last (if not the T-H-E last) of the pre-JewelStock list members to lose his "never-been-to-a-live Jewel concert" virginity. Was it sublime? Did your memories of discovering Jewel at 22 somehow (dis)affect your Jewel-at-28 experience, sort of like meeting an old (unrequited) flame after six years? Did you see the white light? The stage is nearly under the main four-lane bridge leading to downtown. Seating is haphazard with about 100 feet of grass in front, a small "amphitheater" type structure to stage left about 150 feet away, the grassy knoll int he center about 250 feet away, the covered picnic area stage right, and any little spot you'd care to try scattered in between. I knew all this going in, so I decide to stake out a place in front of the stage, about 50 feet away. Scooter Scudieri (sp.) gave about a half-hour set. This guy has a great voice and wonderful lyrics. The crowd was really getting into him. As soon as he stopped, the teeny-boppers rushed the stage in anticipation of Jewel. No more relaxing on the picnic blanket. It was time to stand for the rest of the show. It was getting dark, a guy came out and set a bouquet on a the stage to thunderous applause. Five minutes later Jewel walks out and the the crowd really lets her have it. She says hello to us and the people sneaking a peak from the bridge and starts singing. This concert was like a time machine. She sang very few songs from This Way or Spirit. Instead she concentrated on POY era classics, even binging out Race Car Driver (which I didn't think the liked singing anymore, and which got a wonderful reaction), Don't, the Cold Song, and Little Sister. I even counted the seconds (10) as Jewel held the last 'your' in WWSYS. The concert was total bliss. In person Jewel is more beautiful than any picture can show and her stage presence conveys a genuine regard for her audience. Her voice is ten times better than I thought and even lyrics take on greater meaning. So, you know, like, it was ok. - -- Chopped Liver (Charlie) watkins@selway.umt.edu http://members.aol.com/cwatkins/jerra.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 13:23:01 -0600 (MDT) From: Charlie Watkins Subject: [EDA] MISSOULA As a preface let me say that the venue in Missoula is probably the worst place for a concert that you can imagine. I just figured if it came from him it had to be nonsense. :) Second, my plans for getting there early and staying late to try to get my JewelStock shirt signed were sadly changed by my mother-in-law's trip to the hospital. That's ridiculous! here's what they said: #5 Jewel Publishes her poetry 1998 In the proud tradition of Wallace Stevens, Jim Morrison and Suzanne Somers, the yodeling Alaskan megastar Jewel became a best-selling poet in 1998, with her collection A Night Without Armor. A taste of her poetic vision: "I look at young girls now in their tight crushed velour skin tight sky blue hip huggers with the baby doll tank tops and I think I've been there. God, have I been there." They can be really mean!!!
