I know this is random, but I shared Jewel with my Splender friends.. and I only figured it would be cool to introduce any Jewel fans out there who may like a band I am particularly fond of: Splender. At least take a little time to join the street team and give them a listen. I'd really appreciate it! Let me know if you like them.. I think they're really awesome. I loved their debut, Halfway Down the Sky, and their sophomore effort, To Whom it May Concern is due out Sept. 3rd. Their new single is "Save it for Later" so feel free to request that at your local stations... some personal favorites from their new CD are Good Evening, Wide Awake, But, Anyway, etc etc. Please check them out! Worst thing that can happen is you'll hate them and me and you'll never read another one of my posts. just kidding.. it'll only take 5 or 10 mins to check em out and join their street team. - --Lindsay Check out Splender: www.splender.com Splender Street Team, JOIN NOW!: www.elevated23.com/splender ps - one final thought: many are saying that radio isn't needed for an artist to be good. 100% true.. I agree, but radio is helpful to spread the word and get people to hear them and actually find out how good they are. now, I totally agree that remixing and polishing shouldn't be as big of a thing as it's become, but the radio in general shouldn't be pushed aside (not that it is).. how did we all hear Jewel and our other favorites anyway? there are some exceptions, but for many, without radio and tv etc, how would we really find out about talents across the country? that's all. not really trying to disagree with anyone here. =) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 02:37:56 EDT From: DPS8315@aol.com Subject: [EDA] This Way / Tie-In for AMV Someone wrote: > why does she want to be on the radio so badly?? is her album not doing > good?? doesnt she make enough money??im not trying to say anything bad > about > her (duh i love jewel!) I know I read on this list a quote from Jewel about 'being impressed that her record label would want to release such a [simple song like this way].... Now in addition to a lot of 'newbie' bashing, this song has taken a lot of criticism from many of the list members... and since I like the song, I want to defend it... First of all, from Atlantic's point of view, "This Way" has the potential to be a stuck-in-your-head 'cause-it's-so-mushy song that gets a few spins on AC stations and appeals to mushy-lovey-dovey AC listeners. The added bonus is that there was a shot that This Way could catch on with a Junior High AMV crowd (girls specifically) that doesn't mind hearing a cutesy song about "forever this way." All in all it might not have been the worst move Atlantic has ever made, even if it didn't pan out... I even read that the song "sux" from one member... but Jewel named her album after it right? If either of those points has already been made you can go ahead and brand "newbie" back on my forehead for a day... :-) James Who -Likes- This Way ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 02:46:57 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] AMV compared to Jewel? Its a cute song for couples to say thats "our" song..lol I don't see whats bad about it at all?! or why people don't like it and says it "sux" I hope it does good on the radios and maybe whenever she releases her video it will do pretty good! I can't wait for the video the angel that is jewels number *1* fan hehe! ~Michele I love Jewel!!! Request "this way" on radio stations!!!!! I'm easy to deal with, but I respond extremely poorly to being shouted at. I appreciate subtlety. If someone has to be obvious to me, it really offends my pride. I also happened to catch a commercial for MTV's director's contest for Korn. The only thing I hate about that particular contest is that MTV is just capitalizing on the damn contest. While, yes, Jewel is capitalizing as well ... it's not the main point for her. That is the main point for MTV ... it's all just another opportunity for them to create a reality- based thing .. a documentary if you will. Well, they actually stated that. Furthermore, what's this deal with the age range they have? To be qualified you have to be between the ages of 18 and 34. WTF??? So ... a person who's 40 can't direct a good video? Probably not because they wouldn't be a prime subject for their "documentary." I think their attempt is just plain lame. Sorry, but I just had to vent about their version of the video contest. Atlantic was putting up the cash for M2M going on the road with Jewel. Paying for tour buses, musicians, tech staff etc etc etc is quite an expensive business, and obviously M2M aren't selling enough records in the US to justify that expense. Jewel couldn't possibly say "no, they're staying on tour" because she isn't the one who ultimately foots the bill for them being there. When Jewel first went on tour she drove herself and had no tech crew.. and it was just her and a guitar.. which is why Atlantic could afford to keep her on the road while she was selling minimal records - it was cheap. However I can promise you, M2M's setup for this tour was not cheap. And to whoever said that Atlantic are probably planning on giving M2M their own headlining tour... you have to be joking. If Atlantic pulled them out of an opening slot because they weren't selling enough records, the chances of them all of a sudden deciding to mount a headlining tour for M2M is very unlikely. Chances are they'll be dropped from the label. To be perfectly honest, they weren't that good. In fact they were pretty bad. From what I heard, the audiences didn't respond to them (my audience certainly didn't)... and especially compared to Jewel's skill at performing, they came across pretty poor. In hindsight, having the SoulCityCafe artists opening every show probably would've been a better idea. I guess the only reason that didn't happen was that those artists were expected to fund their own trip/hotel etc etc and probably couldn't afford it for all the dates. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's WAY too simple and TOO sweet. I'm not a very romantic person, but I do like love songs if they have something else, if you know what I mean. I like Break Me because it's not a simple love song. I love Foolish Games also. But This Way is nothing but a love song to me, and poorly written. I certainly expected more from Jewel. And, Jewel said that the reason she named the album "This Way" has more to do with direction (like on a road) than with the song itself. Fabio =) The GrOOvE is in the HEART! Less than four months ago, the singer-songwriter was thrown from a horse and suffered a broken collarbone and rib. She says she's still in some pain but the show must go on. Her latest album is called "This Way," and her first two singles, "Standing Still" and "Break Me," are climbing the charts. According to Jewel, sales don't matter to her. That's easy to say for the singer -- shes sold well over 20 million albums worldwide. CNN caught up to Jewel on her recent tour. CNN: You have found many ways to express yourself -- music, books of poetry, movie roles. What's next? JEWEL: I'm working on a book of love poems right now. Just like a slender novella of love poems. I'm looking at doing another movie. So I hope to be able to continue as many types as I can. I think being creative is like being a farmer. If you have a field and you plant the same crop every year the soil gets depleted, but as you rotate crops your soil gets richer. It isn't always about the crop. It isn't always about what I'm producing. It isn't always about the song I'm writing. It's about how fertile I can remain as an artist. And the more I learn the more I grow, the more I'm around things, the more fertile I am, the better my songs are gonna be, the better my poems are gonna be. That's why I see the value of switching and learning even if the poem, the book tanks. That's not always the point. It's the learning process kind of that really you benefit from. CNN: Tell us about your new single. JEWEL: I love the single. It's called "Break Me" and I thought it was really brave of my label to pick it as a second single. It's not an easy single to break. It's very different. Very stark. It's a poetic love song. No big rhythm track. No big urban sound. It was pretty brave of them. I love the track. I think it's my favorite video I've ever done. CNN: (To Jewels mother) When you look at what Jewel has accomplished, what do you think? LENEDRA J. CARROLL (Jewel's mom): Jewel's career is based on two of her passions. One is her passion for artistry and artistic expression. The other is her interest in making a difference. Those are the guiding stars that we go back to in referencing her career. CNN: Looking back at what you've accomplished, what are you most proud of? JEWEL: I'm very happy with my career. I've found a rhythm that has worked for me. I tour for three weeks and I get 10 days off. I'm able to take those 10 days and write and do what I enjoy. It's more of a sustainable lifestyle rather than just working constantly. My goal has never been I've got to have radio hits and record sales. It's always been make records that I'm proud of and do a great live show. CNN: What type of effect does touring have on you? JEWEL: By the end of my last tour I longed for simplicity. I was glad to live in the car when I did. It was fun, but I'm glad I'm still not doing it. I don't romanticize it to that level. But usually if I'm longing for something like that it means something about my live has to be changed. CNN: You and your mom seem to have a very, very close relationship. JEWEL: Sometimes it's hard to know where she stops and I begin and vice versa. CNN: Tell us about the injuries you sustained when you fell off the horse. JEWEL: I'm okay. It's a broken collarbone, a broken rib. I got bucked off a horse. But as far as bones and injuries go, well, my ribs are in a lot of pain, but I don't have to be in a cast. I won't be playing my guitar for awhile but I'll be able to sing. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #374 ***************************
