Her musical muses now refueled, Jewel serves up an eclectic mix of country, folk and barnstorming rock'n' roll on This Way. "The goal of this record was to model it after a live show," said Jewel, whose previous recordings have never quite done justice to her entrancing live performances. "[I wanted] to do all the styles that I do live." She describes her hiatus as an important part of the creative process. "The industry doesn't understand the winter of creativity, the gestation period. They see it as death. They can't profit on the winter. To be creative, you have to have metamorphosis and you have to be quiet and still and take stuff in and, then, start putting stuff out again." Sarah's been fairly active on the Toronto scene since about 1995, signed with Atlantic under Warner in Canada a couple of years ago. She has one major label release _Night_Bugs_ that's excellent and fairly representative of her current musical direction. "Sweet Ones" is from that album. You might also like one of her earlier releases, _Blue_Parade_ (1999), or _Universe_ (1998), both are among my favourite recordings. As with Jewel, most of my favourite Slean songs are unrecorded ("Last Year's War", "Ogoni Star", "Elaine" and "Sadie"). Of the recorded material, I love "Twin Moon" (_Blue_Parade_), John the 23rd (_Universe_) and most of _Night_Bugs_ ("Bank Accounts". "Duncan", "Book Smart" and "Sweet Ones" are all fabulous in that upbeat, neo-cabaret way). You can find out a whole lot more about the Sleanster at: http://www.sarahslean.com James. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Aug 2002 13:10:38 -0500 From: "Sarah Dowling" Subject: [EDA] NJC: Abra Moore I know this is a Jewel list, and I do usually stick to posting about Jewel, but I was just introduced to this great artist and want to know more. My mom thought it might be better to send it through UPS, so that it would definitely get there, so we sent it out on Tuesday so it would arrive there today. Well it arrived there all right, but then they got a call saying that UPS will NOT deliver to PO BOXES!!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!! So I flipped out, my mom felt so bad she was crying, and they talked to the nice UPS guys, and they said that they would put a card in the PObox letting whomever picks up the mail there that there is a package waiting for them at UPS.... I need to know if they will still get it?!?!? Mike or Alan ,do you have any knowledge of what I might be able to do? At first I thought of resending another tape, but then it would have had to be postmarked by, oh look, YESTERDAY!!!... I have absolutely no other way to contact them to be sure they will pick up my entry..... does anybody have any insight on this? Avril, Vanessa, and Michelle are distorted mirror images of existing artists (Alanis, Tori Amos or Fionna Apple, Jewel). I think Michelle Branch has a lot of potential, but right now she is bubble gum pop like the other two. I like the songs I've heard by all of these girls, however the jury is still out about how much I like them. I think I will respect their talents more if they are still around in a few years... Of course, Jewel started out in a somewhat similar fashion. She was a young one, but ever her early lyrics seem to mean a lot more than the songs these ladies are putting out... Like I said, the jury is still out. Took me awhile to like Jewel too... :) Later Christy the Tattoed angel I personally think Avril and Vanessa and Michelle don't even begin to hold a candle to Jewel or Fiona or many of the others from the Lillith era, but maybe that's just me. Hmm... now, why can't we get Jewel on TRL if she shares fans with these new little girls? Don't forget the fact that M2M is far more successful than Jewel in many European countries, as well as a few others...and they aren't exactly girls who "need a chance in the US" either...their first single here having gone gold and their first album selling quite well. If anything, it wouldn't surprise me if Atlantic has plans to let M2M headline their own tour. Or if they're going to be with another record company, then that company having those plans for them. That would make the most sense right now actually. They've been around 4 or 5 years now so they're not like the Vanessa's or Michelle's....just not as prominent in the US right now. >The purpose of Soul City Cafe isn't to give just anyone a chance, >it's to >give artists Jewel believes in a chance. - ----------------------------- Or rather to give "unknown" artists a chance...whether Jewel believes in them or not. That's the main purpose of it. M2M aren't unknown, or even close to that. So that's why they were never a part of the Soul City deal. The had their own "slot", after the Soul City bands...their own tour bus, etc. There are people who knew who they were well before they had even heard of Jewel...believe it or not. >It's very difficult to promote someone you don't personally believe >in >correctly and all that happens is you not only end up hurting them >by not giving it your all, you hurt yourself by wasting your time. - --------------------------- This is true, but I'm also hoping you aren't implying Jewel doesn't know them personally because there's no way to verify this nor is there any way to verify whether or not she "believes" in them...whatever that means. >I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard Juliana Hatfield recorded a >CD >for them and they refused to release it. - ------------------------- Yes it's very true...they had the "rights" to the music on her last CD recorded with them so when she left them they wouldn't even let her release those songs on another label that she wrote and recorded. Ask Juliana what she thinks of Atlantic, and you'll probably get a go to hell look...haha. Maybe right after she flips you the bird. On second thought, it may be best not to ask. I think she was tired of the corporate bullshit anyway, so there's no love lost there. ~Stacey~ "The Long-er-er-@ss-Posts Angel" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #371 ***************************
