Alley and her band, and I (manager!) just returned from a cross-Canada tour, and had a lot of fun meeting other Jewel fans. Now we're partnered with India.Arie's management, we'll aim to be coming to the U.S. for concerts sooner than later! That's not true -- if you look back 30 years, there was a time when local DJs could play music they liked, because it sounded good. Then came payola, and that was cleared up, then came indie producers. Radio in the past had much more variety than it does today. There are two issues here: - - music format: radio stations, now owned by a handful of large corporations, are terrified of diverging from their focus group-selected format. So your rock station won't play country, or R&B, or folk. Maybe "Pop" if you're lucky. - - band selection: thanks to the wonderful "independent promoters" and clear channel, it takes six figures to get on most radio stations. so only major label acts can afford these kinds of shenangins. >So I was addressing what was >written about what Jewel said, not the fact that there are playlists at >major radio stations...which is true for the most part (for their >corresponding format), yet not the same as stating there's only "one type of >music being played". Each station plays the lowest common denominator, most packaged, most generic, most prefabricated music of its format. The term "rock" encompasses everything from Sarah McLachlan to The Beatles to Metallica, yet you're unlikely to find a station playing all three of them. When teen pop was hot, you saw not one (britney), not two (christina), not three (mandy) but four (jessica) identical musicians. It wasn't "teen pop is hot, let's find some teenagers who can sing interesting music," it was "britney is popular, let's clone her." >And...Jewel does get played often on the "Mix" stations. That's where her >format fits now, and has for some time. So I'm not really sure what she was >commenting about. I mean, Z-Rock is never going to play Jewel, just as >K-RAP wouldn't either. So why should she care how diverse *their* playlists >are? You should care because you care about music, about the music industry, about art. Power corrupts, and look at what you've got: Hilary Rosen and Clear Channel. Oy. Radio has long been the vehicle to promote new, interesting music; it no longer is, which is too bad.
