As another EDA already said, Jewel's dad Atz was there and played a couple of songs. It actually seemed almost like he came out to give Jewel a breather. She gave it her all as always while she was performing and she seemed like she was really tired. Poor Jewel! Anyway, I'll let other people talk about setlists and all that good stuff. It was excellent as always. She always keeps one step ahead of Tori on my list. Anyway, I drove from Houston to Austin tonight to prepare for my LRC tomorrow (or today's) afternoon at my place. Here are my final plans for those that are interested. - - Everyone should be arriving around 1:00pm or so. - - Luna will play when everyone arrives for around an hour or so I think. - - Then everyone can just hang out. I know some may want to go to the Backyard early and also there was talk of having dinner some place nearby the venue. Anyway, once again, if anyone needs specific directions on how to get here or anything else. Let me know. Hope to see many of you here! One more Jewel show tomorrow! Before I get to the subject of my post, I just wanted to mention to the non-M2M fans that Jewel was thanked during the Pantene Pro-Voice concert for providing a lot of support to the program, and one of her songs (I believe it was "A Life Uncommon") was on the CD sampler they handed out. Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed M2M's performance at the show. I saw them at one of Jewel's shows as well as the Pantene show, and they are really spectacular performers. I was able to get an item of theirs signed after their set, and though Marit was busy talking to someone when she signed it, I was able to speak with Marion for a moment, and she was one of the nicest people I have ever met. She was happy to hear that I was at one of their Jewel performances and asked me where I got the collectible that I had signed from. I was appalled at the behavior of the FYE employees, however. M2M was signing at the FYE tent, and before they arrived, the employees insisted that M2M would only be signing their new CD and even had the gall to tell a girl that came up and asked if she could have the same CD signed that she had bought elsewhere that she had to buy it from them. Of course, once Marion and Marit sat down, I just handed them the collectible and the FYE employees didn't say a word. I couldn't believe how they were trying to cash in on those two wonderful women. M2M obviously had no idea about that "policy." Though it isn't uncommon for companies to do that at signings, because it was such an intimate event and because M2M don't have as large a fan base as they used to, the FYE people really shouldn't have been so profit-driven. What difference would one night of CD sales have made for the company? At any rate, M2M stayed there and signed for quite awhile, which I really admired as well. Does anyone know for sure why they left the Jewel tour? I know someone on the list said they thought they were flying back to Norway to promote their new single, but it wasn't mentioned on their website or on Marit's website, and Marion's website just said she was shocked and sad to be leaving the tour so suddenly and didn't give a reason. I hope it wasn't a personal emergency or anything like that. At any rate, at least I got to see them before they flew back to Europe. - -EA P.S. I enjoyed Michelle Branch's cover of the New Radical's "You Get What You Give." She's a wonderful performer as well. I was impressed she left in the "fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson, etc." verse. When I realized that that was what she was singing, I was sure she was going to water it down, but she was true to the song. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 07:06:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Princess Lauren Subject: [EDA] Big Blue guitar Hey everyone! :) I have a quick question: I have admired Jewel's big blue Danny Ferrington guitar for quite a while. I recently began playing guitar, and am okay at it. However, I am having a bit of a problem playing "Carnivore". I can play the whole thing okay, but when it gets to the chorus part, and she plays the C chord for the "never trust your pink fleshy heart" part, she strums differently. Like, she strums the beginning like normal, but then it almost sounds like she's muting the strings, but it still sounds like a C chord. How can I get that sound, and how do I do a chord like that? Lemme know. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 10:38:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Minh Duong Subject: [EDA] Dallas review At the the review from Saturday's Dallas Morning News. Sorry it took so long. My scanner couldn't correctly scan the newsprint, so I had to re-type the entire thing. There a few things the reviewer left out: After her first few songs, she spoke to the audience and informed them that she wasn't going to be playing as much guitar due to her injury. She talked about the incident and told the crowd how the throw broke her collarbone and a rib. This was after he boyfriend's last words to her were that particular horse "doesn't buck much." Then she mused "maybe not for him, but for me and Britney Spears, that horse bucked a lot." She went on to assure the crowd "That's okay. . . I'm such a good dancer, you won't notice the difference." As a treat, she and her dad performed together. He just flew in from Alaska that day. Guess what they performed? The "Yo" song. Before she brought him to the stage, she mentioned she was from that "other" big state. So when he came up on stage, he said "Wow, this state sure does feel crowded" or something like that. "Sh! They've got guns here," she hushed. He played most of the song with a guitar and she yodeled with him on the chorus. Then he performed solo for one song. I'm not sure what the title was. Like all shows, she tried to encourage the crowd to get involved and stand up. The crowd was stood up during some of the songs in the beginning but sat back down after the song ended. Her response was "There's no law that says you can't stand up during a show!" To a front-row ticket holder during another song she singled them out: "What's the matter? Do your feet hurt? Did you pay too much for those tickets?" After that the front sections stood up for the rest of the concert. During periods of the concert, she sat back and let members of her band do solos which I thought was cool. There's something about T-bone that's just funny. Although a lot bass players play with the bass very high on the chest, it just looks so funny on T-bone because he's so big. It reminds me of those cartoons you see where the smallest member of a band plays the largest instrument (acoustic bass) and the largetst the smallest (picolo) It just screams "Will someone get this guy a longer strap." During her encore she did a cover of "The Other Woman" I'm not sure who the original was but it sounded like Nina Simone. Anybody who figures it out, let me know. Well, that's about it. - ------------------------------------------------------ Hard Substance Jewel cuts through to fans hearts with a forceful new sound at NexStage Concert By Matt Weitz Special contributor GRAND PRARIE Pop wisdom tell us that the very worst thing you can do is interrupt your momentum, so when female new-folk singer Jewel took two years off from her phenomenal career to basically recharge her batteries most pundits thought that was it for her. Now she's back, however, with This Way, an unexpectedly powerful third album, and judging from her performance Friday night at NextStage a concert tour to match. By itself, her voice can still attain a kewpie-doll keenness, and she still needs to work to master certain adult forms (Take her scatting on Who Will Save Your Soul, from her 1995 breakthrough Pieces of You. Please.), but overall she's shed most of the callowness of her early years. In its place is surprising power and a rockin assurance backed by a full band, which often gave her a bona-fide bluesmama vibe most evident on This Way's Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone. But not just on that song. Love's Not for Lovers, which she said was written about a week ago, she rocked along propulsively. She strapped on an electric guitar for Down So Long, from 1998s Spirit and did a Middle Eastern-flavored Serve the Ego that Joan Osborne might admire. Her fans were rabidly appreciative, continually hollering for her best-known hit Pieces of You (finally done as a solo piano encore), and capable of pin-drop attentiveness. There were also fiercely protectivejust ask two drunken cacklers who disrupted an unpublished, unrecorded song about a dead friend's violet eyes. Actual verbal censure came from a row or two one either side of the two souses, but glares had a 20-row radius. That song also revealed a more confident and aggressive Jewel. While introducing it, she told fans who kept interrupting her with song requests, This ain't a game show. A few seconds later, after she explained the tune's subject, a fan gave the blockhead's obligatory Wooo! Shut up, she said crossly. I'm doing a song about my dead best friend and you're yelling? From some artists, such affirmation might backfire. The 3,300 Jewel fans in attendance Friday night loved her all the more for it. Other songs performed were Jesus Loves You and a mid-show solo version of You Were Meant for Me. Till We Run Out of Road was another new song, this one written with rodeo-champ boyfriend Ty Murray and about their shared experiences with the miseries and joys of the traveling life. Although she first made her name based on the juxtaposition of her talent and her youth, Friday nights show revealed a Jewel who is capable of maintaining a reputation without qualifiers.
