Subject: Re: [EDA] Read if going to Chicago Show It looks like there may be some problems, then. I wasn't planning on getting into any altercations that night, but if anyone stands in front of my group (main floor 3R DD) they'll definitely be hearing from me. I'm going with some one who is quite short and I guarantee they'll be seeing the whole show. The seats are expensive and we plan to use them. Why would anyone want to stand at a show where there are seats, anyway? So, if anyone going to the Chicago show has seats in front of my group and plans on doing something as disrespectful as standing the whole time and blocking the view of those behind you, please reconsider. It will save everyone a lot of trouble. Hi All-- Didn't know if I could use the tickets until today. So, now that I'm going, is there going to be an offline before or after the show? Thanks! (the album just went platinum!) - -------------------- Avril Lavigne skates straight to the top By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY Avril Lavigne's single Complicated hits No. 3 on Billboard charts. What's the secret to 17-year-old singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne's runaway success? According to Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard, "It's not complicated. It's Complicated." The latter is the hit tune that has established the Ontario-based artist (whose name is pronounced AH-vreel la-VEEN (her dad is French-Canadian) as the latest in a crop of new, creatively autonomous young female artists. Predecessors scoring big at radio and retail include Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton. While Complicated is No. 3 on the mainstream top 40 airplay chart, Lavigne's debut CD, Let Go, continues to climb the Billboard album chart a month after its release, increasing its sales each week. This week, it was the chart's greatest gainer, coming in at No. 4. Mayfield says that feat is rare for any artist under any circumstances, let alone a novice in a financially beleagured music industry. "If you debut in the top 10, it's not unusual to have a decline in subsequent weeks," says Mayfield. Lavigne "fought that trend, and I think it's because that song (Complicated) has really connected with a lot of people." Lavigne herself feels the source of that connection is simple. "The image of me that's out there is real. It's not like my record label made me up. I write my own songs, and when I'm in front of a camera, I don't try to act like something or someone I'm not." Indeed, the tomboyish, skater-punk-influenced persona that Lavigne conveys in videos presents a marked contrast to the carefully polished teen divas who have dominated MTV in recent years. Antonio "L.A." Reid, president of Lavigne's label, Arista, feels Lavigne represents a much-needed change. "There haven't been many women accepted in the rock world lately. She identifies so well with teenagers - everything from (her wearing) an undershirt with a tie and her skateboard to her nonchalant attitude." Airplay Monitor editor Sean Ross agrees that Lavigne's sassy, edgy look helps distinguish her even from relatively similar artists such as Carlton and Branch. "She has more of a rock image," Ross says, adding, "She writes lyrics that speak to teens, although they work on multiple levels." Paul "Cubby" Bryant, music director at WHTZ-FM, a New York-based top 40 station where Complicated has been in high rotation for more than a month, feels that Carlton and Branch "paved the way" for artists such as Lavigne. While he concedes that the saturation of any one type of musical act is always a concern, he reasons, "If they're hits, you're going to put them on the air, no matter what." Of course, assessing the future prospects of a hot new artist is usually, well, complicated. "It does seem there's more fodder for radio on (Lavigne's) album," Mayfield says. "But with a hit as substantial as the one she has now, it will be months before we see what they try next, and how it fares." _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 23:00:39 -0600 From: "Stacey Hamilton" Subject: Re: [EDA] extra michelle branch cd Then you should already know how she named it that. :-) (unless you never opened it) But since you said it was an extra copy, then I'm assuming you have another you've listened to, otherwise I don't know why you'd purchase a CD without ever listening to it. And it isn't a demo CD. It's a regular full length, produced CD, just released on an independent label. It's offered for sale at her website michellebranch.net for about $16.99 I think. Demo CD's aren't typically "for sale". Sort of like promos.
