I read over my post last night about Jewel being very sexual when she's a onstage.. and I don't know how well I explained it.. so I'm going to try again. You see, I've always noticed it in the sense that when I see her perform I'm thinking "God, she's hot" or whatever... but I always just kinda connected it to the fact that she's an incredibly attractive individual... but it's more than that. It's connected to the way she performs. And it's EVERYTHING. The she moves her mouth, the way she kinda dances, the way she sings. It's all very sexual in a very subtle way. Even her clothing. It's not slutty.. it's just... sexy. In fact it's so much sexier than anything Britney Spears or Kylie Minogue does... because they show so much and leave nothing to the imagination. Jewel leaves a lot to the imagination. I think before I was just kind of.. under the spell of Jewel... but the person I went to the concert with (a girl, not a huge Jewel fan) pointed it out to me in a more pragmatic sense. She's not just sexy.. she's a sexual performer. My friend thought it was part of her whole skill of performing - ie - making the audience feel close to her and connected to her in so many ways. I personally think it's just the way she performs.. and it isn't calculated.. but there's no question that it's there. One other thing about the concert - there was SUCH a diverse audience. Many older people, about 50/50 guys/girls... lots of couples.. not many teens or pre-teens at all. I was among the youngest there in fact. Most people were in there 20's it seemed. Not many gay people at all. In fact that's something that's somewhat of a stereotype amongst Jewel fans - that male Jewel fans are mostly Gay. I personally have noticed exactly the opposite at all the Jewel related events I've been to. Not that it matters in any respect... but there you go. This whole Avril, Michelle thing is not only redundant, but I remember a plea from the list manager a few months ago asking us not to discuss other artists in this way as to not offend anyone. Someone on this list is bound to be in love with Madonna, while 3 others hate everything she stands for. My point? This discussion goes nowhere, but my trash can when I get an email with Avril or Michelle's name in the subject. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. If you guys love these artists so much, create your own list for them, obviously you have alot to say about them, as we do about Jewel, and a list for them specifically would be a much better forum than a Jewel list. Jewel aka God. Sometimes I find myself thinking like that, I think its a human thing to put something you adore and respect on that kind of pedestal, and hold up to god like standards. None of which are wrong, we all have a right to how we feel, regardless of how Jewel would like it or not. But on the other hand, everyone is human, and bound to fall short of your expectations if you have them set that high. This Gay thing. I find this totally offensive. Partly because my best friend is a gay man, and was with him when he got gay bashed when we were only 16 in a Target parking lot. It is my personal belive that not only should this not be discussed the same way as the artist comparisons, but because a Jewel song, on her much acclaimed first album brings this up, and says that he pieces of you. This in a way contradicts what I said earlier, and I realize that, but if you are to follow the standards of what Jewel says goes, then, it seems to her, gay is ok. At least ok enough to point out that we are all one race, one live force, black, white, gay or straight. And last but not least the sexuality Jewel has. I also think its not like most other artists out there right now for a few reasons. One, Jewel isn't 16, or 21. Her sexuality isn't new, she has already grown into it and found her own way of using it to her advantage. I belive that the younger artists use it the way that they do because its still new to them, and a new toy to play with, and haven't yet found there own niche and follow the common path of all sex, but not sexual. Two, her sexuality comes from her soul. Not from her curves, or smooth skin. She reminds me very much of old movie stars from back in the 40's and 50's when showing that much skin wasn't the normal. And so you used your facial expressions, the way you walked, used sensual, and not sexual. Am I making any sense? Enough from me, I'm sure some of you will be mad at me for saying the things I've said, but in my own defense I have been on this list on and off for about 3 years. I don't want it taken away from me again because a few people want to argue over something either Non Jewel related, or Jewel is so removed from it, that she isn't a part of it anymore. I really love this list, and reading about others experiences in concerts, and would be very hurt and pissed off, if it got taken away again, for the same reason. It's a common interest and why we're all here, so of course that should be the main thing we talk about. The non-Jewel stuff can be really interesting for people when it's on a subject people are passionate about and when people can be sensible about their discussion. It's not like these discussions come up often - and when they do it's really not hard to delete those posts or join the Jewel-News list (if that's still going!). Just throwing in my 2 Euro-cents :). CD 1 is the band stuff - say the 15 best songs from the band sets of the This Way Electric Tour. CD 2 is acoustic stuff - the 15 best songs from the This Way Acoustic Tour... preferably mostly old, rare unreleased songs that she'll probably never end up recording on a studio record... Then the accompanying DVD could be like a behind the scenes thing combined with video performances of the songs (ie - the same performances as the ones chosen for the CD). But I was thinking - people are going to want to see performances from shows they went to, and the best performances of each song is probably going to be from different shows anyway. So instead of just picking one show for the DVD, they could do kind of a road diary/behind the scenes thing, and kind of follow the tour.. with the songs from the CD in between. So they start by saying "Tampa, FL" and have some behind the scenes footage, and then play I Won't Walk Away (say that's the first song on the live CD) from Tampa... and then move on to say... Orlando.. or whatever... and kind of go through a number of the venues, insert behind the scenes footage, and just go through each song. They could even do that for both CDs and have a double DVD. I just think that'd be really cool. And it kind of fits the whole "This Way" thing because "This Way" was supposed to be like a roadtrip through Jewel's head.. and this is an actual roadtrip through her songs... and that way you'd get a variety of venues and crowds and more people would see footage from a concert they went to. I think that'd be awesome. I'm sure they have TONS of footage. THey could even put some Soul City Cafe stuff on too. It'd be really cool.
