I can sum it up in three words : JEWEL KICKS ASS!! ;-) I won't go song by song because I don't have all that much to say (intelligently), just point out my highlights of the evening.. The solo acoustic part absolutely thrilled me.. When she started with Everything Breaks and Carnivore I was SOOO happy I could barely stay in my seat... And she completely rocked out with the band.. LMJLMA was beyond awesome... I had taken my dad with me because I've raved about her for so long, he wanted to see her live (since I told him it's better). He really liked it, he kept going on about how she has such a great range, both vocally and style-wise. I was 4th row balcony, towards the right hand side and I could see absolutely perfectly!! Love the venue! That whole curfew thing sucked.. She didn't get to yodel either, lol.. Much better than the Spirit Tour I must say.. I had debated on going when tickets first came out because I didn't have much money and wasn't really thrilled with the album (kind of wore it out too quickly) but it was definitely worth GETTING LOST IN TORONTO because people gave us the wrong directions!!!!! lol.. We found Massey Hall by missing the road that the people at the Canada Information place gave us.. But all was ok, we got home (Niagara Falls, NY) around 2:30... M2M was ok, like someone else said once they're on stage more often I think they'll get more comfortable.... I don't have a first born to trade, but I'll see what I can do, if anyone's willing to get me the CBC Broadcast!!!!!!!! Was it broadcast live?? Anyway, I'll do what I can :-) Heather HMN333@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 10:15:11 EDT From: Mc1Starr2000@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Avril reply I think the person originally meant it as a sort of joke because Jewel is one of the more genuine, talented artists out there. I'm sure that none of us think of Jewel as God. We just think she's great in comparison to 80% of the other artists out there. Well, at least I do and I'm sure many other EDAs do. It's an opinion thing and I don't think it's sad to admire someone like Jewel so much. It's better her than most people, right? However, I think it was meant as a joke and she was trying to say that this is a Jewel list and all of us are pretty big fans of her and consider her one of our favorite artists. And in that respect, you cannot compare other artists to her, because most of them will not live up. - -Tanya I totally agree...Jewel is about the furthest thing from God as anyone could ever possibly be. I really think alot of you only like Jewel as much as you do because you're on this list. Ask the "common" non EDA person outside the list what they think. You'll get alot of "oh she's ok", and "yeah she's pretty cool", and thats from her fans. But I don't hear many if any non EDA's calling her God. I think that's a bit overdoing it...and for anyone to put a celebrity (no matter who it is) on that kind of pedestal is a pretty sad thing. By the way, Avril's CD moved UP to #5 on the Billboard Hot 200! She's doing really well, so I guess *some* people must be enjoying her "waste-of-money sucky CD". ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 16:29:50 +0200 From: "Tom Hall" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Avril... <> That's because, if we weren't on the list, we'd only have heard album tracks and maybe a few others. Chances are, we wouldn't have heard greats like 'Carnivore', 'Boy Needs A Bike', 'Race Car Driver' etc. They're the main reasons that I like Jewel. And the main reasons that I'm still on this list. <> And not many EDAs call her god either, because she's not. I *think* (can't be sure) that the guy who did call her god was perhaps being a little sarcastic. <> Yes. But look at who else charts well in America - Ja Rule, Limp Bizkit, Christina Aguilera, etc. It's hardly as if the majority of American chart music is of high quality. So being at number 5 on the Billboard Charts is no way to prove that an artist is really good. Avril's OK, some of her songs are fun - Sk8er Boi is great because it's funny. But she'll never be a favourite of mine. The 'she's only 17' argument can only go so far - Jewel wrote 'Money' and 'Who Will Save Your Soul' at around that age and look how much more accomplished those songs are as far as songwriting goes. Then again, it's much nicer to see Avril in the charts rather than those people I mentioned above - at least she's bearable :). If you want to see a talented young songwriter who deserves to be 50 times more successful, though, look no further than Holly Miranda. She doesn't need marketing or sales to sound (and write) damn good. Cheers, Tom. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 16:21:46 +0200 From: "Tom Hall" Subject: Re: [EDA] Toronto Concert <> Yeah, I mentioned it when I saw her back in February. I noticed it especially during the acoustic set - I mentioned I think that You Were Meant For Me was extremely sensual when she performed it. Very nice :). Good to see some decent reviews of the shows coming through. Sorry I didn't send anything in about when I saw her at Rock Am Ring but I was taught by my mum that if I have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. And I wasn't all that impressed with Jewel's performance - I don't think she's cut out for big stages, she's much better in a small setting. System of a Down, Counting Crows, Natalie Merchant and Muse were incredible though :). Looking forward to the acoustic European tour (or at least praying for it). I was straight before, but as soon as I bought the Jewel CD I turned. I don't know why - maybe it's because Jewel is so ugly? Hmmm... Jewel would definitely be described as more 'girly' music. But making a blanket statement that all Jewel fans are gay is a bit silly. We just have more taste. Keeping to the 'pink fleshy' theme (bad link but there you go) did anyone happen to get a recording of Jewel playing 'Carnivore' at her recent shows? I almost wet myself when I saw she'd been playing it again - I thought she was dissing it at NashBash? No? Oh well... If anyone can get a copy of that to me somehow I'd really appreciate it.
