So someone could say they don't like an artist, or don't like this or that about someone because of this or that and it may spark interest anyway. But there's no point going around telling people a particular artist sucks, and that it's a waste of money to buy their album. I think that's a bit overdoing "expressing ones opinion." I also don't like to tell people what to do. I may tell them I don't like something, yes, but I'll still let them decide whether they want to buy the album or not. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 19:41:53 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Avril is not teeny-bopper rock I'm not trying to be rude, or anything or trying to get anyone mad..But this is a Jewel list...and I've got like 40 billion emails about Avril.... ~Michele "CuSsInG, I'D ReALLy Like To QuIt. From all this talk about Avril, i downloaded a couple songs. IMO- She is hmmm I guess ok. But I am more of a Tori Amos- Jewel kind of girl. We all have our own thing..right? :-) But Gerrit defiently took the words out of my mouth..I was just about to post something to that extent..then I read his post. He said it perfectly. So Avril is for some.. not all. She is doing pretty good in the charts though. hehe.. we need to start promoting Jewel more..than Avril though! So use all this energy posting about Avril and call the radio stations for Jewel! :-D Anyway- thats JMHO! take care all-MeliS "Talk is cheap but the price is high, when it's the truth."-[IMAGE] "it's just like chocolate, I love it"-Jewel Spike to Giles: 'Cuppa tea, cuppa tea, almost got shagged, cuppa tea' [IMAGE] - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. However, during her acoustic set last night, Jewel began strumming her guitar again and her improving comfort level led to an adventurous night all around. (You can view the setlist, along with every setlist from the tour at the www.jeweljk.com Tour section.) I've not seen one of her larger American audiences be quite so attentive during an acoustic set in a long time. She was also in top comedic form with her stage banter, not relying on tried and tested stories, but rather going for it with total abandon - with hilarious and lengthy results. It may have been the most engaging performance of the tour so far. And it was a full moon. Spend about $300 and get yourself a portable minidisc recorder and a set of binaural microphones from a place like The Sound Professionals. If you try to record a show with anything less, the results will be rather poor. I would also recommend a good sound editing program like Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. Also, 1000 speed film and a good camera will help with picture quality problems. I worked at a photo lab for a few years and not once did I see a decent concert photo, so don't feel too bad. Uhmm.. she's about as far from >punk as you can get! I don't think "she" proclaims to be skate punk, as much as she's being marketed as that by the company, either way, from what I've seen they're pushing it about her image, not her music...as in, she skateboards, she dresses punk - so they're taking that as far as they can to be a marketable image because of that trend to try and sell her music. Her music is definately *not* punk! >her lyrics are quite shallow and lame actually. all i did was listen to >sound clips on amazon's site and it was quite obvious how cheesy her >entire album is. I'm not saying that a 17 year old can't write more complex lyrics - as we have seen with what Jewel wrote at that age, *but* I don't think you can really say that her lyrics aren't akin to her age and her life... yeah, she's writing about kind of shallow and cheesy stuff, but when you're 17, a lot of what's going on around you is shallow and cheesy...which is why a big majority of her fan base is going to be people around that age. While older people might not appreciate what she's singing about a lot of 14-18 year olds will...and then some of them will have good taste in music (lol, it's just joke!) At least she's got potential, she actually plays an instrument, and writes her own music *right from the start* unlike a lot of pop artists, and she has room to grow into a more profound artist, beyond what she's writing now, once she gets some more life experience (she did actually grow up in a *really* small town, there probably wasn't much beyond the usual teenage angst and problems happening around her)...who know's, by her next album, she could just pop out some real good tunes with more in depth lyrics, and surprise all her critics. seriously though, I don't mind her music for times when I don't want to think, and just want to hear a catchy beat and nothing that makes my mind work too much... so I guess this is all coming from a fairly unbiased place - I understand both sides, she'd definately never make it on my list of my favourite artists, or most influencial music in my life, but I don't think it's horrible, and if it came on the radio, I wouldn't change the station. it's definately not marketed towards an older group, so it's no surprise if anyone 18 or older isn't all that impressed with the music - and like any music, regardless of age, some people are going to like it, other's aren't. I do agree with expressing our opinions, but I do think that we have to keep a little tact in mind - you can get the point across that you don't like something, and wouldn't recommend people buy it without actually violently bashing the artist, and in turn, pissing people off who automatically feel offended because if you're bashing something they like, they feel like you're bashing them - regardless of the fact that they shouldn't take it to heart, you *know* it's going to happen, and this really doesn't need to become another "Michelle Branch" discussion where the list doesn't mention Jewel for weeks because people are too busy argueing about whether or not she sucks. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #294 ***************************
