My personal request would definitely be Nicotine Love. I have a friend coming to the show and we're 8th row, so I'm gonna get her to help me scream for it. If all the Toronto EDAs requested it too she might definitely be convinced to play it. I'm also bringing lyrics. However, I was thinking that if she can't remember it at all it would be good to have a backup - a song we all know she knows, but that's rare anyway. Considering she played Carnivore in Wallingford, without any request or anything, I think that's the perfect choice. So - what do you guys think - Nicotine Love, first request, and if she hears us and says she can't remember it, and doesn't want the lyrics, then we scream for Carnivore. Who's with me? So I'm with you on that, hopefully she'll remember the words to Nicotine Love *and* play Carnivore on her own :) I was just going to write the the list that we should request either Here When Gone or 1,000 Miles Away for picking songs when I read that :) Yay! This makes me even more excited to go the concert :) ~ Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: Fredsteve@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Sent: Wednesday, June 26, 2002 3:04 PM Subject: [EDA] Toronto Show - Song to request Hey Guys I was so inspired by the idea that the Chicago EDAs had (having a mutual song to request)... that I thought maybe all the EDAs going to the Toronto show on Friday could do the same. Don't waste your money. >If radio keeps playing crap like that, real music...GOOD music might >never >get played again. - ----------------- First, she doesn't have a song called "Marry Me Today", and I'd like to remind you that we were all told not to bash other artists. So please don't. If you choose to dislike a particular artist then that is fine, but you don't need to rant and rave about it on an e-mail list. Do that on your own time please. Talking positively about other artists (even IF some may not care for them) promotes the artistry of music and does offer those who MAY like that particular artist the opportunity to hear them and potentially to gain interest....as many EDA's have with Avril. Just because you can't relate to her or her music, doesn't mean millions of others can't or won't. Just like not everyone can or would care to relate to the music you like hearing. Doesn't make anyone better or worse than the other, just different tastes. I don't like green peas. You might. You may not like corn, I do. Just an example. I don't go around saying green peas suck though (even though they do) I hope you get the idea at least. And the reason so many people are requesting "Complicated" is because they LIKE it. Same reason people request any song. You seem to think because you don't like an artist, then no one has the right to, almost as if you're looking down at them in a way for that. So thank you for your not-so- kind words about her and in the future please refrain from the bashing. There's nothing productive about it. Thank you. ~Stacey~ _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 19:14:00 -0400 From: "Scott" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Avril is not teeny-bopper rock Haha, to stay out of the big Is-she-cool-or-not? fight, I just have to say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed that Sk8er Boi is the next single. Actually "Complicated" is not a good representation of how Avril's entire CD sounds. Anyone who has purchased it can verify this. It IS one of the more pop-sounding song on it....as Avril as admitted herself in fact. So someone shouldn't base the whole CD on that one song. Of the 13 tracks, I probably like that song about 6th or 7th best, and I'm a huge fan of hers too. What we do seem to be getting away from is the bubblegum pop, as you mentioned. But that isn't Avril. It is things like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, LFO, even Britney somewhat. Times are changing. Of course not everyone is going to like everything. If the airwaves were filled with Ani, India, etc., sure many of you may enjoy that, but you also aren't the millions around the world either. There's always going to be a flipside to everything. Can't ever avoid that. What you CAN do though is simply change the channel. I don't have a problem doing that when bands or songs come on that I don't like....which could be ones some of you do like. I don't complain though, I just push the button to another channel. Freedom of choice. - ------ >Complicated is the only song I've heard from her, but I think the >teenybopper >rock thing is funny. "marry me today" is a phrase in one of her songs. it's not the name of a song. :P it was just an example of childish lyrics. i don't think any of us are here to promote the music industry as a whole. we're into different music artists and are here airing our diverse views. if everyone just agreed and posted positive fluff, it would all be boring and actually smell a lot like the recording companies. discussion, good or bad, actually promotes the music anyhow cuz more people are motivated to check out the music and decide for themselves whether they like it or not. Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 17:30:32 -0600 From: "Stacey Hamilton" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Avril's next single Has this become official yet? I wasn't sure if it was or not but I've heard these rumors also. If so, then I'll have to agree with Scott on this. Skater Boi could be my least fave as well, or in the bottom 3 anyway. I wish they had chosen Losing Grip, Unwanted, Anything But Ordinary, or even something like Mobile. There are a good 5 or 6 tracks that could be great singles. I understand why they chose that one though, to appeal or target a certain group. Not sure if that's the best choice but there will be time for a 3rd and 4th single so that's fine. We'll just have to see how it pans out. There's alot more to Avril than many people are seeing through the marketing. The small town gospel singer with a voice that could overpower some of the best. People are focusing alot on the tie and her outfit and when songs like Skater Boi come out as a single (which is the *only* song of it's type on the entire CD), that probably won't help matters alot. If Arista wants to knock people off their feet, they should release "I'm With You" as the follow up to "Complicated". But it could be the 3rd single very easily. Her vocals in that song are outstanding. Sometimes people get too caught up in the marketing though, and lose sight of the true talent of the artist. Don't blame the artist for the plan their record company has. I mean, think about how some of us may view Jewel compared to someone who bought This Way as their first Jewel CD? Think about that. Ones who've never heard of Innerchange or Rare Angels or Jewelstock. Jewel is being marketed alot as well. But since we all know where she came from we don't tend to let that bother us quite as much, since we know what she as a person is capable of. Give people like Avril a chance. Don't let the marketing overcome the artist before they've even been given a fair shot to prove themselves. I think the best way to let them is to see them in concert - live. If they still suck to you, then fine. At least you tried. I give artists a chance. I see them perform without the production of the CD behind them, then I make my decision. ~Stacey~ - --------------- >Haha, to stay out of the big Is-she-cool-or-not? fight, I just have to say >that I am EXTREMELY disappointed that Sk8er Boi is the next single.
