I think Amanda did a good job on the Orlando show, but here's my two cents. Wow, what a great show. This was the fourth time I'd seen Jewel since May 1996, and also the best since then. It was great not having to look through binoculars (Lilith Fair) or on a big viewscreen (Miami 99) to see her. And she looked and sounded great. Band was really good. A couple of highlights / notes: - "Who Will Save Your Soul" with an extended bass solo. - "Down So Long" with extended hard-rock-yet-very-tasteful guitar solo by a guy that I'd swear was David Boreanaz from Angel. Good guitarist, he was. - Very neat stage with cool lighting and artwork behind the musicians. - I wondered for some time about the piece of art right in the middle of the stage. It's a person holding a duck, or perhaps (ahem...) male privates. But then another friend said they thought it was a baby and that made me feel like a pervert. I just couldn't see it. I dunno, I'd like for the rest of you to notice it and give me your opinion. - "The New Wild West". - "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" - always fun, but she really dug into it tonight (as did the slide guitar player). Wow! - Jewel's solo set. It just seems much more spontaneous and exciting when it's just her. She said she didn't know "Emily" when it was requested, and couldn't even remember doing it at all. "Morning Song" was a fun sing-a-long. Also read poetry (#6, I believe she said, called "You Tell Me") - "Angel Standing By" - always captivating. - After seeing so many bands lately playing with backing tracks and such, I was happy to see that almost all of the music you hear is coming from Jewel and the band. The only time I think I could tell otherwise was the bongos on "Serve the Ego". - M2M not at all painful. In fact, most there really seemed to like them. Those of you who expect the girl-band-dancing group you might have been warned about will be pleasantly surprised to see two young girls (and band) who can really play and sing. - Apparently not many EDAs there, oddly enough. I read that Amanda was there, and I saw Eliot from a distance, but I wore a sign that said "EDA? Say Hello!" and Not One Person said hello. :-( What a time! Best Wishes to everyone going to future shows! Have fun! ml the "Nobody Says Hello to Me" Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 01:25:36 -0500 From: "Lew - New World Warehouse" Subject: [EDA] RE: NJC: guitar question Jason is correct on all counts. Bm is a B minor chord and the string order on the chord chart will be the low string to the high string. The X means you mute the string (basically keep it from sounding out). The best way to play a B minor (well the standard way at least) is to "bar" (lay your finger across instead of just push with the tip) the 2nd fret, use your ring and pinky to hit the 4th fret notes and the middle finger for the 3rd fret. It's a pain in the ass chord, but really good for a dark sound. I've encountered few artists that enjoy having people yell out comments in the middle of songs- it certainly adds nothing to the music and at the very least disrupts the performer... I'm all up for seeing live music and showing my appreciation for artists- but some seem to be unable to act in a responsible, respectful manner- esp. after drinking.......... I have no problem with partying - I just wish it wouldn't be an excuse for some to act foolishly. I see lots of shows- some crowds are great - i just think some individuals need to be a little more thoughtful before they act. Show your appreciation or provide comments at appropriate times, please. just my thoughts, Sean ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 09:09:51 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] avril/michelle umm am i the only one a bit tired of hearing about avril and michelle... umm get another list! my opinion... i like avril better. more attitude, thats good. michelle seems empty. just observation. my real opinion... i like... no... i love jewel. thats better. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: Click Here ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 10:37:43 -0400 From: Shawn E Williams Subject: [EDA] TODAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I KNOW I'M PROBABLY GETTING ON EVERYONE'S NERVES, BUT I'AM SO F*CKING EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm really excited I *FINALLY* get to see Jewel in concert this summer... June 29th... yay!!! I finally actually get to go (last time she was in PA I had cheerleading tryingouts, and I got an invite to Nashville and had to miss it at the last minute *tear) But I had some questions... I heard before that a blue ribbon is like an EDA symbol? Is it, cause I was going to tie one to the antina (I know I spelled that wrong) of my car. Are there any other EDA things? I never got around to buying a shirt, I might make one if I get the inspiration. I know I asked before and only one or two other EDA's said they were going, but I would still like to show my EDA pride. Also.... I really REALLY really want to hear Carnivore- it's my favorite Jewel song ever. I know several people have said that she has been taking requests, but someone said that once she couldn't understand what people were saying and didn't take any. I was thinking about making a sign that said Carnivore or something like that to hold up she she asked for requests.... is this good idea yes or no? Alright hope some of you can help me out!!! xoxo ashley staggers the Pi Beta Phi angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 13:33:53 -0400 From: "Elizabeth Vickery" Subject: [EDA] michelle/vanessa/avril ok, i'm sorry to drag this up again, i know you are all sick of hearing about them, but just wanted to throw my 2 cents in about these 3 artists, all of whom i happen to love. i am lucky to be old enough to have experienced the first wave of girly music back in mid-90s, and that's when i fell in love with it. after all this bubblegum poppy stuff that's been happening for a while, arent' any of you relieved to finally have girls who play instruments and write their own songs back on the scene again? i am thrilled to be able to listen to these extremely talented girls on the radio. even though they are not as "raw" as the older girls were, they are just as enjoyable and talented. check out michelle branch in concert if you don't believe me--she is absolutely amazing. the fact that these girls are produced is only because that's the kind of music that's popular today. if they had come out back in the mid-90s, they would have played the same raw music as jewel, fiona apple, etc. first played. ok, well hopefully this all makes sense, and sorry that it is so long. Yesterday was one of the coolest days of my life. My girlfriends parents rented a black Lincoln to take us to the show. whoa! It was sooo cool to get chauffeured around town. We went to Margarittaville and bought a drink before the show-that was pretty cool. Yesterday was 3 months since my 21st birthday and that was the first drink I ever bought. The show... I really don't know what to say. There has already been one review tell ya'll about what she played. Jewel was her usual self, being flirty, making jokes and just enjoying herself. Although she seemed to be struggling, she really wanted to move that arm and she was fighting herself to keep it still. But her sense of humor certainly wasn't injured. She joked about not having her guitar, "I feel a little weird without my guitar I look so cool with it, like Courtney Love and shit.... er stuff" During the "...Newsletter portion of the show" she talked about Soul City Cafe. Somewhere along the line she did play Cold Song. She did kick the band off stage for a bit and did a few solo acoustic songs, she did a few more during the encore. It was great!!! When she started the acoustic set, "I told the doctor, I wouldnt strum" she said in her I am 5 and I dont have to do what daddy said voice "but I can finger-pick" She ended the show with like a 15 minute rendition of WWSYS, it started out with the electric guitar player doing a really long solo, while she sat on the edge of the stage flirting with him and the crowd. They of course ate it up. Then it went into a battle of the bands type thing, with the other electric guitar trying to mimic her vocalizations. Then she sang and ended the show. It doesn't get better than that. Chartered ride to the show, with the most beautiful girl in the world at your side. *sigh* what a night! Centralfloridaangel PS. Jen and Amanda are crazy for standing through the whole show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 17:22:24 EDT From: SpiritEDA@aol.com Subject: [EDA] tampa show question Hey EDAs I just have one small question. Only expect to find it in HMV, Virgin, Tower Records and Independent record stores. You'd better be quick as they're selling fast, my local HMV's sole copy sold out in less than five minutes after I walked in the store. For the collectors out there I believe that the UK release is identical to that released in Holland last month. It comes in a cardboard sleeve, has just one bonus track of The New Wild West (live). The catalogue number is 7567-83510-2 It odds on that this will be Jewel's worst chart single performance, probably even failing to beat Standing Still's lowly 83.
