I think that its mostly due to the switch in music trends. Right now we're backing out of the pure pop boy bands/ solo pretty girls with bubble gum tunes, and heading to the opposite of the spectrum into hard rock/punk/nu metal/metal. But in order for the companys that were racking in on Miss Brit brat and the rest of them, they have to provide transitional artists. Now I admit that I really like the Avril Lavigne album alot, especially the song Naked, but as soon as I heard her I knew she was a transitional artist. Someone brought in to help ease the 13-16 year old market from that pop princess image into the heavier music scene. In the words of Julie Andrews "A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down." Although I must admit that I like Michelle Branch. But I don't think Jewel has sold out, either. I think she's just experimenting with different sounds. If you haven't noticed, and this isn't supposed to be mean, but not a whole lot of people liked Break Me. Atleast not as much has POY and Spirit. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say lol. The CD has potentially 6 or 7 singles...very easily. All first rate singles too, not borderline ones. As far as the production goes, and people saying they didn't like Jewel's CD as much as the previous ones....I think that's mainly due to people comparing This Way to PoY or even Spirit somewhat although Spirit is more similarily produced like This Way. I wouldn't say Avril is *way* more produced than Michelle's CD. I mean Michelle's major label one of course. They're fairly close, just different styles. And I'd say This Way is right in there with them. But the main reasons people were bashing the production of that CD is because it was so different from PoY. Fans of Michelle and Avril don't have that past comparison, so it's ok for them to have the sound they do, that IS their sound. Whereas Jewel came to be known with a totally different sound. For years. Then all of a sudden Spirit comes out, then This Way, that's nothing like PoY production-wise. So of course you're going to have the complainers. That's just naturally going to happen everytime someone changes drastically. I'd be willing to bet if Avril did an all acoustic CD next, there will still be those complainers. I personally would love that, but I know alot of people would be used to her sound on Let Go and wouldn't like an all acoustic CD from her. Just depends on the person really, and how open minded they are I guess. And how willing they are to accept change. Hope this explains the phenomena somewhat. ~Stacey~ > I just got "Let Go" and I have to say this girl is amazing!!! She blew >me >away!!! I love when she is rockier, her popish stuff is great too! And to me, calling an artist "annoying and irritating" is indeed bashing them. And to call one of their songs a "piece of garbage" isn't exactly commending them. If you simply don't like a particular taste or style, then that's fine. But there are nice ways to go about saying that. And of all the songs on Avril's CD, I would rate Complicated around number 8-10 (of the 13 tracks), 1 being the best. It's not her best song, and if anyone chooses to judge her based on that one track, then you really haven't heard Avril. Over half the CD is actualy more ballad type stuff...more mellow. There's the one "punk" like song, Skater Boi, which I would rate around 9-11, again, not one of my faves, then there's Complicated which is sort of it's own sound, then there are a couple more rockin songs that sound nothing like Complicated. Then there are about 6-7 ballads. And I also wouldn't cross her, Michelle, or Vanessa with Britney or anyone else. They are all individuals, and it seems you've been reading too many Rolling Stone/Billboard articles, etc. since just about every single thing I've read compares them to the same people you were comparing them to. I don't jump on bandwagons though, and I like to give artists a chance. I also happen to like Fiona, and I wouldn't compare her to Vanessa at all, or vice versa. So they both play the piano, are female, and are under 30. That's about where it ends. Their sound, lyrics, and styles are nothing alike. And for anyone to compare any of these people to Britney is just crazy. I don't dislike Britney, she's doing her thing and I respect her for that, but I would never compare her to any of the aforementioned artists. And you know, I'm sure there are many people who think alot of Jewel's songs are, to quote you, "pieces of garbage", but there's no point in saying that. Keep your thoughts to yourself if all you're going to do is bash another artist. We all know everyone doesn't like every single artist. People are different. No one is 100% right, and no one is 100% wrong. Just different. So leave it at that. ~Stacey~ Michelle Branch is Jewel crossed with >Britney... Vanessa Carlton is Fiona Apple crossed with Britney... to >produce a girl who plays an instrument and writes songs... but they're >shite. > And this latest one... Avril Lavigne... she's Alanis Morissette (who I >don't >like at the best of times) crossed with Britney... to produce a girl who >plays an instrument and writes songs... but they're shite. Hi... Well... when i got the spirit special... as you all know, it comes w/ a t-shirt. I promised i'd never wear it, 'cause well... JEWEL!! I didn't wanna dirty it... But i figured i had to do something to show that I LOVED Jewel... so i wore it to school. NO ONE knew it was Jewel.. In fact... since it was from the Spirit Tour... It said "Spirit" on it, and people thought it was from the cartoon "spirit" w/ the horse and the indians... I was like... That didn't work... So when I got my New shirt, "This Way".... It has a HUGE arrow that says "THIS WAY" pointing to the left... and a lot of people, including my teacher were like "This way? What's this way??" And this guy was like "go stand outside the door so that people don't get lost trying to find the class room" And i was like... "I'M NOT A SIGN!!" and he said "you sure are dressed like one!" And i was like... "UGH!! THIS WAY is the name of Jewel's new album!!" I swear... people are so deprived!! Not to mention, i said something about Michelle Branch and my friend was like... "Who's Michelle Branch???" I was about to faint... lol... Anyway... just thought i'd share... And also... Jewel needs to make some other kind of t-shirt to make people KNOW its a Jewel t-shirt.. and not just a "sign". --it did have a Jewel picture on the back... but people didn't even bother to check i guess... i think i'm gonna start wearing tank-tops w/ ties! ;) (inside joke w/ avril lavigne fans!) ~Jewel Fan~ http://www.angelfire.com/sk/killorgeteven/pale_shade_of_grey.html (long story about the name of the URL. No, we were told to respect one another's opinions. I stated in my email that if you like any of the people I was "bashing", I respect your opinion.. and I'm just stating mine. > And you > know, I'm sure there are many people who think alot of Jewel's songs are, > to > quote you, "pieces of garbage", but there's no point in saying that. Of course there are many people who think that - I've met quite a few of them. And why is there no point in saying that? It's an opinion. Why keep things inside? Even if they're negative... negative opinions are just as valid as positive ones. If somebody came up to me and told me one of Jewel's songs was a piece of garbage, I'd be interested to know why... not angry because that person was being "mean" or negative about Jewel. I made the comparisons that I made because I think they're valid. That's just me. I have every right to say it. It's on topic because we've been talking about Avril Lavigne and then somebody brought up a good point about This Way and those artists... if you're allowed to make positive comments why can't I make negative ones? The negative posts about Jewel are, to me, often the most interesting... being critical isn't being just mean... or "bashing"... it's showing passion and caring about art and music. I think it's valuable. > > We all know everyone doesn't like every single artist. People are > different. No one is 100% right, and no one is 100% wrong. Just > different. I agree 100%. I never said that anybody had to agree with me, or that I was right. I just stated what I think. I ask you - what's wrong with that? I'm posting this reply to the list, just because you posted your reply to me to the list as well... however I suggest that after this we not post the replies on the list, because there's no point getting into an argument on list. It just crowds other people's mailboxes. All I did was express an opinion.. I REALLY hope it doesn't ignite anything.... if it does it really makes me wonder.
