It does me! That and the fact that I wouldnt know what to do if caught in one. I'll take a hurricane Andrew, Floyd, or Hugo anyday. 99% of the people killed during these storms drowned because they didnt have enough sense to get the heck off the beach when 30 foot waves hit and they drowned. These storms come in seasons - so you have at least 6 months to prepare for one, and since they can be seen thousands of miles away, one can infact get the hell outta dodge instead of dealing with them. And for those that choose to stay near by- the surf is wicked, a few days before to a few days after the storm. I'll stick with the overgrown thunderstorms thank you so kindly- Centralfloridaangel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 06:36:08 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] NJC:cali earthquakes i think its totally understandable for people to not be affraid, or take earthquakes lightly, especially if they have not been in one. but once you are in a big one it kinda shakes you forever. its been a long time since i was in the really big one, so im not so bad about them anymore. but for a lot of years if i felt one shake, the slightes vibration, my heart was racing, i went into a panic. when you are 7 in a small store getting ice cream, and you reach into get your ice cream out of the store freezer and right before you grab it you are pulled to the ground by your mom and you huddle together hugging as if you may never see eachother again... well its scary. and the store owner runs out on you and leaves you behind. then you are up to your waist in shampoo bottles and you can see and hear the brick walls chipping away around you. and you know they could collapse any second. then you hear the building next to you collapse and you know yours is next. then all of a sudden it stops. youre so shaken you cant walk. its so dusty you cant see your hands in front of you. people are walking in a dazed panic crying. people are searching for someone who they cant find in a panic. and everyone stands around and looks in shock as the most treasured, and one of the oldest, buildings in the town falls to the ground. all the streets are ripped appart and water floods them all. you have to run several miles to get home. including going over a bridge not knowing if at any moment an after shock will take it down. well... theres lots more. but as you can see these arent events that you forget. an aftershock is nothing sure... just a jiggle and nothing falls. but in a big one that rips everything appart you change your mind about earthquakes. you respect them a lot more. i thought it was funny when i moved to minnesota for 2 years and all the kids asked me how fun earthquakes were. they thought you jumped around and it was fun! i was like umm i almost died in one... i dont know where you get these ideas hahahaha. well, they also thought that blue corn chips were rotting chips... but thats a whole other story hahaha so just wanted to share my side of the discussion... having earthquake experience and all. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: Click Here ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 01:21:08 -0700 From: "billy streeter" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC:cali earthquakes I was 9 when the '89 quake hit us, watching the battel of the bay like many others. It started just like the one the other day did for me. Pretty mellow, the house kinda rockin' up down side to side real quick, like waves. Then it really started a few seconds in to that. My house started craking and just about everything in my house strated hitten the floor. I ran outside ASAP (bad idea if you have power lines outside). t was quite frightning. My room still has a crack down one of the walls and it creeks now and then. I'm lucky. I spent the night in a tent and watched one of my neighbors house burn down that night. Most of you might have seen the damage around the bay area on the news that night. I've been threw a pretty big one and mid size ones still unsettle my nevres. I know a lot of people wh that one was their first and they were really scared. Mother nature is not one to be taken lightley! In any situation. Look at Pompei. I think she is only paying us (as humans) back for the terror and ravaging we have done to her and the rest of her babies. Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC:cali earthquakes I'm from Maryland, a place that has little to no natural disasters...ever. We've had a few tornados the past few weeks, but those are extremely, extremely rare. I was really interested in this earthquake talk, becaues I'll be in California all summer for an internship with the Student Conservation Assocation. I'll be in Groveland, CA. I'm not really sure where that is, but do they get earthquakes ever? I admit, I would like to know what an earthquake is like, as long as it's on a 4-5 ranged one. (Guess I can't be choosy though, right?) Anyway, anyone who is familiar with the area (I *think* it's by Yosemite) let me know? Thanks! It's like a free 5-20 second ride at Six Flags w/o nearly the scariness at all. I've had friends visiting from back east been in them and then been extremely surprised cuz they thought it was gonna be much worse. And yes.. in 7.x category ones too. Granted, if you happen to be near a catastrophe the RARE TIMES they happen, I can see how that would be scary in and of itself. However, California has been built up with Earthquakes, so the structures 'round here are much likely to be affected by them than say, an Earthquake in the North East. It is simply one of the Sanskrit words for "jewel"; it also means "gem" or "pearl", among other things. Another Sanskrit word with similar meanings is "ratna". So ManiMerch is just "JewelMerch". Lenedra's "the wish-fulfilling jewel at the center of the lotus" is an interpretation -- not a translation -- of the Sanskrit phrase much used in Tibetan Buddhism, "om mani padme hum". But thanks, W1GGY2@aol.com, for the information. Like Stacey, I too was wondering about the change of name. She played a lot of songs i won4t walk away Standing still Do you want to play Hands You were meant for me Everybody needs someone sometime Love me just leave me alone New wild west Who will save your soul i hope i didn4t forget a song. It was nice that they broadcasted Jewel. She wore a jeans skirt and a white tshirt showing us a little ... (cute!) She had fun, although to play at festivals is always difficult. But it rocked, i really enjoyed it The crowd was very very far away from the stage, and jewel didn4t walk towards the most closest post to the fans (at least what i seen on tv), but she was really good amused, and the band was wearing summer glasses and jewel put before you were meant for me began also a cool sunglasses on. bye Michiel the dutch jewelfan http://www.jewelkilcher.myweb.nl the dutch jewel site _________________________________________________________________ MSN Foto's is de makkelijkste manier om je foto's te delen met anderen en af te drukken: http://photos.msn.nl/Support/WorldWide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 May 2002 00:11:52 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: [EDA] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_=5BEDA=5D_Jewel=B4s_songs_on_ROCKPALAST_toni ght_on_GER?= =?iso-8859-1?Q?MAN_TV?= Yeah, I saw the whole show from the internet!! I didn't think they were gonna show it again but they did!! The highlights: - - Who Will Save Your Soul - WOW!!! This is the best live song EVER!! It sounds similar to the Woodstock version, but a lot better (believe it or not)!! You've got to listen to it. AMAZING! - - The New Wild West - this song will always be a highlight. The live version is very similar to the album version. - - Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - this version is GREAT! Wow! A lot better than the Woodstock one. The band jam was bigger than on the album. Fab! - - Jewel, of course. She was in such high spirits! She was so lovely! VERY different from that exausted face she had in Woodstock. She laughed everytime she looked to the guitar player, makes me wander why. She didn't move much. She was very calm but her voice was perfect. Even the scream in LMJLMA was perfect (i thought she wouldn't do it because it hurted) The low points: - - the backvocals. I'm sure there is a woman doing backvocals but I couldn't find her ANYWHERE. Very strange. Maybe that was one of the band members doing a girlish voice, but I doubt it. Also, these backvocals were very loud. That oh..oh part from Do You Want To Play was SO loud, it was annoying. Also in SS, that woman sucked big time. I say fire that woman, please! Jewel has always sang by herself, why is she using this lady now?? Setlist (what they showed - I don't know if she sang other songs) I won't walk away Standing still Do you want to play Hands You were meant for me Love me just leave me alone Everybody needs someone sometime New wild west Who will save your soul One more thing, very funny. Michiel can you confirm this?? I don't know if it was my real player that bugged or Jewel did a big mess with LMJLMA. It was so funny (or would it be tragic?)! When the 1st chorus began, instead of saying "does your love need a home?" she said "your mother was a wolfbite" and she looked to the guitar player (is it just me or he is very similar to Steve Poltz?) and laughed, said "your dad was a cigarret" and busted "love me just leave me alone". Very odd. Than she said the 2 other lines from that verse ("your brother... turtleneck") and went to the chorus. hehe... If you guys have any questions, please, feel free to ask! I'm negotiating with my mom a trip to see Jewel in the Chester Fritz Auditorium, on August 17, but I need as much information as I can about it. I highly doubt she'll let me go (and pay this trip...) but you never know.... Questions: 1) Is there a Bed and Breakfast Inn near this place? I found just one online. It's called 511 Reeves. 511 Reeves - A Bed & Breakfast 511 Reeves Drive Grand Forks, North Dakota 58201 (701) 775-3585 Fax: (701) 787-0290 Bill & Wanda Graveline, Innkeepers http://www.bbonline.com/nd/511reeves/index.html I have no idea if it's close to the Auditorium and I couldn't find how much it is per night. If someone could give me some info, I would really appreciate! 2) Is the town interesting? I mean, are there cool malls or places you recomend?? I mean, will I get bored in, say, 4 days? 3) If I go, I intend to practice my English as much as possible, so are the people nice there? (what a dumb question...) 4) Can I meet some of you there? It would be very nice! 5) Is this a (very) small town, middle town or big? I imagine it's not that small because there is University there, right? 6) Is the venue small? How many people can enter? 7) Are there McDonalds?? hehe... just kidding... I feel so bad for asking so many things... I am 80% sure I will not be able to go because it's gonna be too expensive, but, as I said, you never know. The tickets for this show start selling tomorrow, so I must hurry to get ok seats. hmm... you might be asking why am I planning on going to North Dakota instead of California. Well, I would love to go CA as well, but the tickets are more expensive and the seats left are very bad... But it's in my negotiations too...
